I got one for free when I bought the Tab 8.9. I might have otherwise considered one of those integrated bluetooth keyboards / tablet cases (it all folds up as one), which seems far better for day-to-day use outside the home. However, this keyboard is good around the house and I'll probably take it on vacation so I can leave the laptop at home (too bad there's no pouch or cover). And the Samsung keyboard dock has a couple of other advantages over such bluetooth keyboards: first, it's customized for the Galaxy Tabs (more on that below). Also, the front of the keyboard is weighted for a more solid means of propping up the tablet at a good compromise angle for sitting or reclining. More stable than those folding cases that create a stand (especially if you like to lie down and put the Tab on your belly to watch movies, like I do, hands freed up for drinks and snacks!).

Other good: I find I can type fairly quickly despite the compact size (although it's strange to type without a mouse at hand, instead reaching up to the screen to put the cursor where you like or do other things you'd normally on the keyboard or mouse). I have medium size guy hands and can touch type fairly fast with this. Don't expect the normal function keys or other special keys found on your laptop/desktop keyboard. Samsung swaps those out for keys that match the task bar buttons on the tab. There are brightness and volume keys, which are much more functional than having to do that from the tablet. You also get an on/off key, cursor movement keys, and one to bring up the Quick Settings (like touching the time display on the Tab). All in all a good selection it seems.

Drawbacks: Here's where I was hoping for a bit more.

I purchased this to use with my Galaxy TAB 8.9 and ended up returning it a week later. The product build quality, fit and finish are great, however in the day and age of Bluetooth keyboards, i didn't find it very practical. Here are some thoughts, It integrates really well with the Tablet, typing is easy and includes some special hot keys to control various tablet functions such as volume, brightness etc. It's also great that it doesn't require batteries, pairing, etc. It's a bit heavy, nothing folds here its just a typing block and dock in one piece. Features a nice pass-through on the side so you can plug a charger in while its docked. So onto the bad, it wont work while it's inside a case. I have one of those extremely slim rubberized cases, and even with that you'll need to remove it in order to dock. Would be nice to have a removable tray to dock with thinner cases, like some apple/ipod docks have. The angle of the dock itself is not adjustable, you cannot change the viewing angle. It would be nice if you can swivel the tablet over the keyboard to close it like a regular notebook/laptop. Last but not really a big deal, is that i figured for almost 50 bucks this will ONLY work with this particular tablet, technology changes so fast, why buy a product that can only be used once. I went out and purchased a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android 3.0+ (920-003390) instead. Universal works on my phone, PS3, my galaxy tab, you name it. Also has a folding adjustable stand, and neat case to stash the keyboard. Best part you can use it with any case on your tablet, only downside is it requires batteries.Read more ›

This is the second keyboard dock I have purchased for an Android Tablet, the other one being the dock for the Asus Transformer 101. In both cases, the dock really does transform the tablet from a "content consumer" to a "content producer", in that entering text for papers and numbers for spreadsheets becomes almost as easy as it is on a laptop. I also like the dedicted keyboard docks much better than I do a bluetooth keyboard (which I have also used), as I find Bluetooth a power-drainer and have had occasional problems connecting with bluetooth keyboards.

This being said, the keyboard dock for the Galaxy Tab is not quite as functional as the one for the Asus. Although the dock is well-made and I found it easy to type on (as a two-fingered typer the small keys are not an issue), the Galaxy Tab dock had two major drawbacks in my opinion:

1) As noted in other reviews, whenever you "click" on the screen to enter text, the virtual keyboard still pops up and has to be turned off via the dedicated key on the keyboard. Not a huge hassle, I admit, but one that I did find annoying, especially since it is not an issue with the Asus. It is especially a pain when editing what you have written, as it pops up each and every time I go to make a correction.

2) The keyboard can be quite slow in entering text. I am by no means a fast typist (maybe 30-40 WPM), but there are times wheile I am typing that I can seen a definite "lag" between the time I enter text and the time it appears on the screen (it just happended with that line as I typed it on my Galaxy 8.9)

These two issues aside, I still gave this product four stars, esepcially for the price I paid. I love using my Galaxy 8.9, and feel it is a shame it has been discontinued. This dock will extend my use of the 8.9 and make it even a better asset to my productivity.
