5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent rear-projection HDTV
Very nice!

Be sure to check out an expert user group or a calibration DVD to get the settings right -- it's too bright out of the box.

Pros:
Image is amazing. Bright, sharp, colors are nicely saturated when appropriate and subtle in other scenes. Onscreen menus are easy to use. Built-in QAM can handle unscrambled digital cable [i.e. if...

3.0 out of 5 stars Problems after a year
I love my TV, however just after a year it will not come on, So much for it lasting the 100,000 hours or life of the TV. Not to mention it could cost $300-$900 depending on what the problem is. I get 3 blinking lights which in Samsung's meaning, is that the "bulb" is bad. A TV technician said it could probably be the power supply since they are built with cheap junk...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent rear-projection HDTV, July 16, 2007
This review is from: Samsung HLT5689S 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
Very nice!

Be sure to check out an expert user group or a calibration DVD to get the settings right -- it's too bright out of the box.

Pros:
Image is amazing. Bright, sharp, colors are nicely saturated when appropriate and subtle in other scenes. Onscreen menus are easy to use. Built-in QAM can handle unscrambled digital cable [i.e. if your cable company provides unscrambled local HD (which many do), you can just plug the coax in and voila!]. Excellent set of connections, and plenty of 'em, that are easy to access.
Oh, and did I mention that the picture is AMAZING?

Cons:
1. It is a rear-projection system, which means that the viewing angle isn't as good as plasma or front projecton. Horizontal viewing angle is pretty good due to the screen, but vertical viewing is not that great. If all audience members are at about the same height it won't be a problem -- but if you have people who like to stretch out on the floor or stand/exercise while viewing it might be a real concern.

2. There are 2 "zoom" modes for watching 4:3 programs. However, some stations air 16:9 stuff letterboxed into 4:3. It would be really nice if one of the zoom modes scaled things *just right* so that letterboxed 4:3 content filled the screen, but neither does. [Zoom1 is close, but you still crop top/bottom a bit]

Overall it's a great TV.

This TV is worth every penny I paid for it and the price was right. I had it shipped in 2 days I was very impressed. Blu-ray pumped into this set is awesome. This Samsung replaced an older Samsung DLP with a projector bulb. it is nice to have almost instant on operation. The color's are true to life rich and vibrant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Samsung LED DLP HDTV, September 9, 2007
This review is from: Samsung HLT5689S 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
WOW! What a picture right out of the box. It exceeded our expectations for digital cable output and is outstanding on HD. We thought our Hitachi Ultravision had a great picture but this unit has a more vibrant picture. We looked at the plasma and LCD HDTVs but concluded this was the best picture for the money. We are totally satisfied.

This was our first large TV set. We chose the digital projection technology because you get the picture of projection without the occasional exploding bulbs you get in the other projection units.

The TV lives up to hype, as when we first plugged it in to Cable without even the Cable box, it found all the channels and we could see a lot of HD content readily available.

The unit starts quickly, changes channels quickly, and has great color. It does a pretty good job of upsampling low resolution channels and input.

We are very pleased with this TV, and the technology level, the HDMI is version 1.3 which will give you some better throughput with some equipment, and also future proof your purchase a bit.

We also have hooked up a Playstation 3 to it, and it just works great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line, December 15, 2007
This review is from: Samsung HLT5689S 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
You can do all your research, you can read all the reviews, you can hit all the stores and try the side by side comparisons but the bottom line is when it is all said and done you will be looking at one TV in your living room.

So with that said, you want your TV to look good and you want a good deal...I had a previous DLP model# HLP5063W (About 3yrs old) sold it and used the money to put towards this model and the picture is like night and day and does not disappoint at all...Bright bright colors HDTV is crisp off of DirecTV box and BLuRay is gorgeous to look at and life like. Design thin bezel is really nice too. If you don't want to break the bank for a large screen you cannot go wrong with this model trust in this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Problems after a year, May 8, 2009

I love my TV, however just after a year it will not come on, So much for it lasting the 100,000 hours or life of the TV. Not to mention it could cost $300-$900 depending on what the problem is. I get 3 blinking lights which in Samsung's meaning, is that the "bulb" is bad. A TV technician said it could probably be the power supply since they are built with cheap junk. And that he has had several to work on recently. Samsung was no help since I'm outside of the year warranty, so I told them thanks for selling me a $2400 TV that dies right after the warranty. But I loved the picture and quality of the TV which went well with my Samsung home theater system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of merchandise!!, May 15, 2008
This review is from: Samsung HLT5689S 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
This was my first leap into HD. Originally I was planning to buy a Samsung HLT6189S but I read some mixed reviews on that unit. I decided to go a little smaller so I bought the HLT5689S. I first hooked it up to my standard defintion box through Directv and noticed an immediate improvement in sharpness versus my old TV....as I would expect since my old unit was at least 15 years old. This past Monday I had Directv come out to install the HD equipment. Right out of the box the picture is amazing. My wife thinks it is almost 3-D. I'm still waiting for my receiver and speakers to be delivered, but in the meantime the speakers on the TV do a very nice job of creating a surround sound experience. All in all, I'm very pleased.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok set. Needs work, August 28, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung HLT5689S 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
Got this set about a month ago. Noticed the "prism" effect since day one. This is where you get rainbow type flashes and flickers within the objects on the screen. This issue is more prevalent when watching DVD than anything else but I have started to notice it more while watching television as well.
Have had a tech come out and she noticed the issue and told me to wait for firmware. At this time Samsung has no known firmware that will fix this issue. So I'm working on exchanging this set through Vanns.com. Vanns has a return policy where they come and pick up your defective set and then ship you out a new one, leaving you withough a $2k+ product that you have already paid for for more than a week.
Good times.
