I love this camera so much, I've gotten two of them! Actually I lost one while on a hike, but I liked it well enough to order another one straight away before my next adventure! I owned the last model, the Samsung HMX-W200, but had that one stolen from me. So now I've owned three in this family, all three have been dropped a few times, pulled underwater, and still take great pics and videos! I'll tell you that one thing this camera does well is handle heavy amounts of sound. If you are at a concert (indoor or outdoor) and try using your cell phone, the sound is likely to come out like a crinkled mess. This camera could handle being up in the front of the crowd at Perry's stage at Lollapalooza where they were blasting bass through a 20,000 or so person crowd, while still recording good video with all the sounds and experience that was the concert festival. Will buy more and more if I keep losing them!

Good camera for the price. I purchased the manuf refurb unit. Be aware that the manuf refurb unit does not come with the original box or any of the accessories. You will need a USB extension cable at a minimum. For the discounted price of the refurb unit it was fine with me but just be aware that you will get just the camera, wrist strap and manual. No other accessories.

The camera itself works fine. Good quality video and camera, good camera response, some video/camera combo units are slow to respond to the camera picture function, this one is fairly fast, not as quick as a point and shot though but better than other combo units. Menu functions are very easy and simple to use. Since this is waterproof and shockproof this is a good camera for hiking, boating and going to the beach and for the price a good value.

Needed a camcorder for a couple of projects, and this met my budget and expectations.

The good: Expandable micro sd storage, good picture quality and sound quality, menus are easy to navigate. Battery life is pretty good for the price.

The dumb: USB latch is hit or miss, and the button is way too small to lock the cover. The USB latch should be on the side instead of the bottom, so you can charge it while it is on a tripod.

Summary: Other than those few design quirks, this is a pretty good camera. It is pretty rugged and intuitive to use, so I don't mind letting the kids use it, and it is small enough to take anywhere.

I'm really impressed with the ease of use, quality feel, and design of this little camera! The camera does both still and video photography, and is shock resistant and waterproof. Though refurbished, the camera arrived looking brand new. I bought it to record video during a cross-country bike ride. I'll update this review should it somehow disappoint [SEE BELOW]. It doesn't have some features one would find on a more expensive camera - no LED light or flash, for example, and no way to add any external light. The lens and sensor are what one might expect on a high-end smart phone. It has a socket for a tripod or stand. A 32 GByte memory card stores about 540 minutes of HD video. It has a handy little USB connector built-in, so no need to mess with cables or chargers - just open the port and plug it in to a computer USB port to charge, or transfer video to the computer. The unit comes with a 90 day guarantee, wrist strap, and instruction manual. It does not come with a memory card (micro-SD), so plan to spend from $5 to $35 for memory, depending on how much you want. Already loaded on the camera is "Intelli-Studio" a basic, bare bones, but simple and adequate photo and video editing program.

UPDATE: So I mounted this camera to my bicycle, and discovered that this camera is totally unsuitable for this use. The camera generates an odd "wavy" distortion that completely ruins the video when it is subjected to vibration and forward motion. This effect occurs on either 720 or 1080 resolution, and whether the anti-shake feature is activated or not. I (belatedly) checked out some on-line videos from those who tried the same as me, and had similar results. I need to stress that I'm not some perfectionist whining about a little choppiness or shake - the video taken from a bicycle is so bad that it is completely useless. To be fair, Samsung never advertised this as an action camera, so I was taking a risk. It's still useful for a lot of things - just not mounting on moving platforms.

I purchased this to take the place of my mobile phone when I can't use my mobile phone. Like in the pool, in the ocean, at the beach in my wet swimsuit pocket. I can't say enough about this camera. I picked it up for about 60 beans on Amazon. Got it in one day. Used it around the house to see the picture quality and video quality. A nice surprise was the ability to take a photo during videoing. The image you get during video is a lower resolution (2mp I believe) but its better then nothing. The video quality is very good. Its a bit on the shaky side if you move it too fast. You have to pan slowly to avoid the shaky streaky affect. Still images are very good. Even in low light.
I took the camera on a cruise to Mexico and it performed perfectly. The video I took during our ruins tour in Progresso Mexico was better then expected. The audio was clear and even the driving video I took out the bus window was just as I had seen it live.
I took it to the beach in Cozumel and gave it a good water test. Again the camera was perfect. Better then expected. Under water shots of fish and my daughter swimming were great. The lens glass must have a coating to avoid droplets building up on the lens because not one video or photo had a droplet. I took the camera down to about 5 ft and have no leaks. It was nice to be able to toss the camera in the beach bag or in my wet pants pocket and forget about it.
The camera turns on almost instantly. I never missed a shot.

The only cons I could scrape together are its lack of wide angle and rather poor zoom. The zoom it does have is digital not optical so the quality suffers. The wide angle is pretty much 1to1. In other words, what you see is what you get. But in my opinion, that is where this camera excels. It is perfect for capturing what you see, just as you see it. And more importantly, when you see it. No waiting for the camera to zoom out, or zoom in. No having to stop the video to capture a still image or, fumble around with two cameras to capture video and still.
Is this the camera to capture the perfect sunset, family portrait in front of a Mayan ruin, or Pink Flamingo flying half a mile away? NO. But it is the perfect camera for recording those life time moments that you wish you could have got but didn't want to mess with or chance using a better solution. Kind of like what most people use their mobile phone for. Except not many would bring their mobile phone in the water or just toss it in a bag with a bunch of beach stuff.

I was very happy with the product at the beginning. We were able to take photos and videos under water and didn't worry about losing those great memories. However, like a couple of other reviewers noted, the memory door/lid opened easily and little water got into the device. It stopped working and it did not turn back ON ever again :(

The ruggedness of the device is not enough to protect it. I will try to apply for a refund as the advertised waterproof aspect of the device does not really work. I should not have to use heavy duty tape to keep the memory or USB latches closed nor did the instructions advise me to do so.

I purchased this product with the hopes of filming my wife's surfing lesson. In short, the "waterproof" latch at the bottom of the camera which houses the usb port does not have a secure lock. So, after using the camera for less than 30 minutes, the latch pops open and the camera is flooded with water. Game over. Camera ruined. Moment ruined. Incredibly disappointing. And the camera was under water of only about 1-2 ft depth, despite its claim of waterproof up to 5 meters, it failed miserably.

I would purchase a Go Pro if I had to do it again. The seller and amazon said they would refund the purchase price for the camera but I have yet to receive it or any information on the return 1 week after I mailed it using amazon's return shipping label.

Like the size and versatility. Was disappointed in the slow lens and how it handles indoor lighting. Would buy again.

I do not mind that this defaults to video instead of camera, I can deal with that.
What I cannot deal with is the major lag between pressing the shutter button and the photo getting taken, MAJOR MAJOR time lag.
And it does not focus until after you press the shutter so depending on what you are taking a picture of and how well you stand still it can be even longer.
The video mode is excellent, crisp clean videos.
I think I will stick with shooting videos and then can use some editing software to extract a piture if I want it.
Kind of a pain, but I can live with it.
I will report on the durability after some underwater uses

This camera was a present for my son's birthday. I thought that if I could get a waterproof, shockproof camera that maybe it would stand a chance of lasting a while.

Try two weeks.

The very first time it was used in the water (at a depth of two feet), water got into the latch and the camera is done sauce. There is water in the lens and water on the lcd screen area. EPIC FAIL, SAMSUNG.

Way to be waterproof.

This is your warning. Go find something else. The latch stinks and pops open if your neighbor sneezes, it springs itself open way too easily. Ruined camera. Sad child. Hard earned money (even though it was on clearance at Target) just got flushed down the toilet. Samsung customer service said they could repair it for $105. Fan-freakin-tastic, especially since I paid about $65 for it. Happy birthday...not.
