First of all Im going to clear up some of the negative aspects some users noted about this product. I am an electronic engineer so my technical review is pretty accurate.

For those reviewers who said they encountered hissing from the speakers and passed it off as a badly built product, just don't know how to correctly setup the system. I looked at the electronic schematics for this product and Samsung has applied the correct components to help reduce hiss. Speakers work off of a low power signal, this signal is prone corruption and noise interference, Samsung put feedback resistors in the circuit so it cuts down on noise (hiss). But this is useless if the user splices lines and they do not insulate the connections properly which is always a big culprit. Secondly if you experience hiss your first thought is that it must be the product that was made by a world leading electronic manufacturer whos quality is renowned worldwide? Hmmmm, that's kind of funny that the thought of the old, degrading, and in some cases poor wiring in your house cant be the problem? In fact that is the exact problem, there is so much noise in the wiring of your house that it travels through the power cord, through the circuitry, and out to your speakers where it is translated into a hiss. So how do you fix this? Samsung supplied the product with a device that eliminates this from happening, it was probably thrown away by the users who complained about the hiss. It is a black cylinder that can open in half. It is called a fairite bead, it blocks noise from the dirty wiring in your house from entering the product. You wrap it around the power cord and this fixes the hiss problem. Now that's out of the way I can start my review.

First, I'll say the good things. The blu-ray player worked great. The actual sound coming out of the unit, whether direct from the player, or HDMI or optical cable from the TV, was really great. In theory this is an amazing piece of equipment, especially for this very affordable price.

But the speakers hiss. They were all hissing, and it drove me insane. Often I could not tell if I was hearing ambient surround noise from the movie (like wind, the ocean, etc), or just speaker hiss. The center speaker especially has a really awful high pitched tone that dogs could probably hear. You could hear it from about 2 or 3 feet in front of it, especially in a quiet room (i.e. difficult to hear in a showroom at PC Richards, which is where I bought it.)

I sent the unit to Samsung for repair, and despite e-mailing and calling them to check up and over and over again remind them what the problem was (they seem to have basic problems understanding anything I said, it was so incredibly aggravating) and checking on how the repair was going, they seemingly lied to me saying they "found the problem" and "replaced the part."

When I got it back, a note was on it saying "defective, would not play discs. Fixed." What? I sent it in because of speakers making noises, the discs played fine. As suspected, the hiss was still there. They did not repair it. They literally made up a fake problem for it, replaced it for no reason, then sent it back. Awful customer service.

I went back to PC Richards to return it. I listened, this time more closely, to the one on display in the store. Same hiss, same high pitched tone. Why would they sell this? My friend has an older samsung home theater unit and the speakers are 100% quiet.

For a disclosure, I did not buy this from Amazon. Although Amazon's price is very slightly cheaper I decided to buy from a local electronic store because I did not want to go through returning via mail if something was wrong. The previous Reviews made me nervous about buying this system.
But I have no regrets after the first few hours of using. No 'hissing'-none whatsoever. May be previous Reviewers were unlucky enough to get bad devices or, more likely, they did not connect cables in certain way. Here is my setup and that works perfectly: A 27 inch LCD TV outputting audio to this Samsung system through an optical cable. That covers the audio part: ANY sounds your tv would output will get routed through the Samsung system.

Now to video the part.

I have a Logitech Revue Google TV; can be had for under $100 used. Route your Blue Ray output from this Samsung device to the HDMI input of Revue. Then route your Revue's output to the TV's HDMI input. Voila! I can watch Netflix, YouTube, and ANY videos on the net--including Flash videos from multiple sources--as well as Blue Ray media in this cheap, flexible, powerful, and very quality setup.

Again, no 'hissing'. Very quality, powerful sound.

BTW, I am not easy to please: This is my 3rd Home Theater System purchase in about 1 week. One was an RCA from Walmart but that, despite 1000 W output, was terrible in sound quality. Then I bought a Samsung one from Amazon but returned it yesterday because that had no optical audio input AND no HDMI input. Worthless except to play DVDs.

This Samsung device is also our house's first Blue Ray DVD player. Someone has recently lent us the 'True Blood' season 4 in Blue Ray disks; this timely purchase will help us enjoy that.
