4.0 out of 5 stars Big Bang for The Buck!!
After months of searching and researching I decided on this system. Looked at the Panasonic's, Kenwoods, Onkio etc and had my mind set on Kenwood or Panasonic till I went to a store that had a good display of various systems. I had a budget of $500 and looked hard at the Panasonic HT 940 system but after two hours of taking the same music cd's and movie dvd back and forth...

2.0 out of 5 stars BE ADVISED IF YOU SEND FOR REPAIR SAMSUNG MAY SEND A DIFFERENT REFURBISHED UNIT BACK
I bought this unit for Christmas and by February it shorted out. Amazon only warrants it for 30 days so I had to send it back to Samsung for repair. They held it for 6 weeks supposedly waiting for parts, this is the manufacturer mind you, and after numerous calls they wanted to send me a refurbished unit in replacement of mine. I refused wanting a refurbished unit as I...

After months of searching and researching I decided on this system. Looked at the Panasonic's, Kenwoods, Onkio etc and had my mind set on Kenwood or Panasonic till I went to a store that had a good display of various systems. I had a budget of $500 and looked hard at the Panasonic HT 940 system but after two hours of taking the same music cd's and movie dvd back and forth to the displays, I choose the Samsung because of the crisp highs and deep bass, smaller speakers, sleek look, rear wireless ready and the ability to play any format out there. Once home the ability to fine tune each cross-over to get the sound right in my house was awsome and easy to setup. The speakers are small but beat some of my 100 watt JVC audio speakers in the house. My wife was very impress from the sound from the small speakers. I highly suggest Monster Cable for any system you buy. I walked out of the store under $500. The system was $319, the Monster cable $44 and three year total replacement policy was $56. Would highly recommend this system to anyone who doesn't have a fortune to spend on a home theater system.

This system does everything you would expect from a home theater system, and looks nice to boot. And to correct the poster below, it does play burned dvds. The only problem is it does not include audio connectors to hook up the T.V.'s sound to the receiver, but they can be bought very cheaply.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great device, but too big., November 28, 2006

I actually bought this for $329 from CompUSA (it was $379 on Amazon at the time), and it's a great unit but it's just too big. It's far longer than a typical VCR or DVD player, meaning it sticks out a few inches from me TV stand. I was going to buy a new TV stand but the three models I liked were also too short for this gadget. It's just a much larger DVD unit than most typical devices, it seems. Performance-wise, it's great. There was not enough speaker cable to run the read speakers around the edge of my small apartment bedroom, but other than that it's been nice the past week I've had it.

I have put some video and pictures on a USB device and tried to play them. I found a few video formats that worked, and browsing the photos was alot slower than what you might be used to (with a computer or digital camera or whatever) but this is just an extra perk for a 5.1 surround sound DVD player.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung HT-Q70 XM Ready Five-Disc DVD Changer Home Theater System (5.1 Channel) (Electronics)
I only recently took the plunge into HDTV and home theater. I looked at a lot of reviews and decided to go with this unit because it was Samsung (and so is my TV) and because of the wireless-ready feature. I purchased it along with the wireless unit and couldn't be happier. The wireless unit is a small device (about the size of a thumb drive) that simply plugs into the back of the main unit. The wireless receiver unit then connects to the two rear speakers and you are all set. The sound is impressive and there are numerous fine-tuning features for audiophiles. Not being one myself, I just left most settings at factory defaults and it works fine for me.

It comes with a good manual and has a lot of settings for different modes, all described in detail in the manual. The disc changer is awesome and allows you to leave a few audio CDs in it and still watch DVDs. The only thing I noticed about the changer is that it only remembers where you left off if you don't change to another disc. If you are in the middle of a movie and decide to continue later and consequently turn off the unit, it will start the disc over again the next time you turn it on because it will always begin at disc 1 in the changer. This took some getting used to for me because I was used to a single-disc unit that remembered where I left off before powering down the unit.

The upconversion is awesome and the standard DVDs look great on a 1080i TV like my 40-inch Samsung. It also has plenty of connections. I have it connected to my TV via an HDMI cable and the playback is flawless.

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.

This product is the best home theater I have ever owned. Matched it with a Samsung 1080i DLP and get great picture and sound quality. Can't beat it for the money. Very easy set-up, only problem was that it is deep so watch cabinet size.

I refused wanting a refurbished unit as I know they usually are junk and my unit was brand knew. Samsung refused to send me a new unit and indeed sent a refurbished unit. And quess what? The refurbished unit arrived with all the buttons on the face pushed into the case and not working! Big surprise? After several more calls to Samsung and ready to call the Better Business Bureau they agreed to send me a new replacement unit of similar style.
As for the unit itself, the sound was very good and the features were great for the price. If you are lucky and don't have to send it out for repair this might be a very good sounding unit for the price but if you do need repairs good luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good home theater, but be careful!, February 18, 2007
This review is from: Samsung HT-Q70 XM Ready Five-Disc DVD Changer Home Theater System (5.1 Channel) (Electronics)
I was amazed at the price for this home theater system with all the features it has. Upconversion looks pretty good. Sound quality is pretty good, but could use some tweaking (sometimes bass overpowers everything else). XM radio ready was what really got me excited about it and works good although sometimes its a pain in the [...] to read the info on the screen, it's real slow and usually cuts of the last part of the name of the song. After having this in my home for about 2 weeks I turned it on and shocked it. Well the whole screen went out and the volume knob no longer worked. I took the reciever/dvd player back and it was replaced no problem from Circuit City. Would have had to ship it back to Samsung and wait 2 weeks or more for them to fix it. So now I just make sure to use the controller to turn it on. Overall I'm very happy with it and for the price I dont think you can beat it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Get the Onkyo 790 or something else for around $120 more, December 13, 2006
This review is from: Samsung HT-Q70 XM Ready Five-Disc DVD Changer Home Theater System (5.1 Channel) (Electronics)
Before buying this, go to the store and compare the sound of wood speakers to aluminim speakers or other close materials. If you are like me, you will never want aluminum or plastic speakers again. I thought maybe the technology had gotten good enough to where I would be impressed by an aluminum set of speakers, I was wrong. Sure, this thing is loaded with features for this price (probably the best featurewise), but do we buy a sound system more for features or for sound quality? My ear is very discerning, and I buy for quality 1st and then the features I absolutely require second. If I cannot get both, I just raise my budget until I can, because without both you mise will listen to your TV's regular sound or slowly build your audio system (start with 2 speakers, go to 4, etc...).

I returned the HT-Q70 for lack of quality sound, missing midrange. It does not have that creamy sound that I like which seems to only come from wood or larger speakers.

Featurewise it is fine, except for lacking some playable formats. I used to have an old Pioneer stereo with (2) $50 Radio shack speakers made of wood. I have to say that I would rather listen to stereo sound on that set then surround on this one. The "creaminess" and real-life sound was not there with these aluminimum speakers. You may like the sound of these speakers, but please go compare them to other materials.

For $110 more you can get the Onkyo 790 which has wood (maybe synthetic wood?) speakers, and all the professional reviewers have given far far higher ratings to the Onkyo 790 for sound quality. The Onkyo has much larger speakers as well though, which is probably part of the reason. Also, Onkyo is one of the few that actually has enough confidence in their HTIB speakers to sell them as individual units. Check out the Onkyo 790 CNET review or go to any audio forum. Most audiophiles agree that the Onkyo 790 is one of the best bangs for your buck under $450, if not the best. I am looking for the Onkyo set at a retail store so I can hear it before buying them, but I am pretty sure that is what I will get instead of this.

This systems is great, everything I loved, even the USB it's super user friendly.
The only thing that I disliked was the fact that it wouldn't play my foreign DVD's, i guess it was region restricted.

Sound is crisp and powerful, I really loved this system. What a pitty I had to return it.

Super great system though.
