4.0 out of 5 stars Great system for the price
Overall I am very satisfied with the Samsung HT-WX70. Though I bought it refurbished for roughly $230 shipped, well worth it and not a lick of problems so far (owned 1 year, knock on wood). A good deal for a $350 plus system new. I like the overall sound, absolutely pumps. The minor issue I had was if I didnt adjust the sound of the center speaker I needed to play it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Awesome for the $
This was my original review....Please go to the bottom for an update! I bought this system 4 days ago and had everything plugged in and working in about 30 minutes. I cant believe I paid under 350 and got what I got. The surround sound is very life like and it has tremendous bass. Jurasic park is amazing with my new system. When the T rex comes for the first time...

I cant believe I paid under 350 and got what I got. The surround sound is very life like and it has tremendous bass. Jurasic park is amazing with my new system. When the T rex comes for the first time its roar is incredible but that is not what i like best. I like listening to the rain in surround sound. It seems like I am standing in the middle of the movie. I have yet to turn the volume over 40 and even 25-27 is very loud with this DVD. My wife starts giving me those looks.

The only reason I didnt give the system 5 stars is because the remote takes some getting used to and the back panel is a little confusing connecting with my direct TV. I dont have HD direct TV. It would work best with HDMI in and HDMI out. My tivo receiver only has compontent and s video output.

Very satisfied with my system.

After 2 years it is now not working and I too am having trouble with over heateing. I really liked this item but I think its now shot. I have replaced the reciever with a different unit. I now give it a 2 star rating

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective desgn, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
The wireless rear speakers failed to work without going through the tedious "reset" process every time the unit was off for more than a few minutes. This occured after only a couple of days of use. From researching online, this seems to be a typical problem with this unit.

ht-wx70

This review is for the samsung ht-wx70 home theater system.

This product is typical samsung junk!

We purchased this unit from sam's club two years ago for 499.00. Now the dvd player will not play dvds, instead it makes a load whirling noise from inside the units box.

I called samsung and described to problem. They told me my unit was out of warranty. I told them I just wanted it repaired. I would have guess 50-100 to repair. I was told it would be 165 + shipping.

Great, for 165 I could buy another dvd player. Do you think I will buy another samsung? NO! Maybe I will buy a cheap "no name" brand for about $30 and then I won't care so much when it quits working in about the same amount of time.

The thing that really ticks me off is that the customer service person knew what the malfunction of my unit was based off my s/n. They knew this unit was malfunctioning and could have contacted me to offer a repair before my warranty was expired!

Quality not quantity...If I wanted a dvd player to only work for two years I would have bought a cheap unit!!! I "thought" Samsung was a quality brand. Apparently they have spent more money on marketing a solid image than they have spent on designing a solid product.

I should have known. Do I want the 499 dvd player made in china or do I want the 39.99 dvd player made in china? I would prefer the 1000.00 dvd player made in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for reading my review / rant.

1.0 out of 5 stars possible fire hazard, April 30, 2008
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
I've owned this unit for about 6 months. While it can produce great sound, the rear wireless speakers continually quit operating for reasons I don't understand. The speaker card at the rear of the unit (hard to access) must then be removed and replaced for the next few hours of operation. Last night, the unit started smoking and had to be unplugged after smoking up two rooms in the house. It's now being returned to Sams Club as a possible fire hazard.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY - DEFECTIVE !!!, June 8, 2010

Okay initially this seemed liked a great buy and the sound is good. HOWEVER.....the wireless speakers have to be re-set every time you use the thing! Now if you think re-setting is simply pushing a button you will be wrong! You have to have two people to re-set this garbage if you are in a big room. One person has to push a button on the remote and the other has to find a small insert on the back of the wireless box and push it right after the light on the remote goes off or you have to do the same process over again. This may not sound tedious or difficult but trust me ..i'm a junior audiophile and it is totally unacceptable. We also have problems with DVD's and the sound being off...picture a cheap asian martial arts film and how the lips don't mesh with the words.

DON'T BUY THIS....AND I'M A LOYAL SAMSUNG CUSTOMER WITH A 60 INCH DLP, AND SEVERAL 40 INCH LCD TVS FROM SAMSUNG. THIS PRODUCT STINKS STINKS STINKS!

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective. Do not buy!, May 2, 2010
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
Rear fan failed on me twice causing the unit to overheat each time. This is not the first case simply Google this model number and there are countless people having the same overheating issue. The unit will automatically shut down when it overheats making DVD watching impossible. Warranty, as I suspected, is out so I'm stuck with a large paperweight.

Rear speakers don't catch the signal. Resetting... this thing is a piece of junk so stay away from Samsung.

2.0 out of 5 stars loved it but wont last for years and years., September 8, 2011
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
well we too loved the samsung HTWX70. we bought it along with a Vizio LCD flat screen TV about 4 years ago. We never experienced the Back speakers not working unless the tv show was not in Dolby. I guess some shows don't transmit for Surround Sound. the Sound was awesome and we liked the quality of the DVD player. we never had any problems with the sound not matching the DVD scene. I am sad to say though that after four years our HTWX70 turns itself off and my husband is thinking the fan is not turning on and the machine is overheating. we also ran into the sad reality that we could not buy just a reciever since our back speakers are wireless and its about impossible to find a reciever that has the spot to put the card(we have a small house no attic or basement and i cant do speaker wire all over the place). I refuse to spend so much money getting this one to work when we could have a new one cheaper. we moved this one to our bedroom and I put a small personal fan in the back of the machine and so far it's actually working. probably need to say stay away unless you dont mind getting a new system every 4 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great system for the price, October 19, 2009
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
The minor issue I had was if I didnt adjust the sound of the center speaker I needed to play it relatively loud because on low volume u cant hear wispers and other soft sounds from the TV (though all I had to do was up the volume on the center speaker helping offset this and no longer became an issue).

I think this system is great if you can get it for the right price, plus I love the HDMI input/output options which allows one HDMI Cable in and one HDMI cable out so you to play surround sound on a seperate electronic device (PS3, Xbox, bluray player, cable or satellite TV).

We've owned the Samsung HT-WX70 for just over a year now; we purchased it in October 2007 from Sam's Club.

Pros:
The system was easy to connect to our HDTV, and HD satelite receiver - each of these connections requires a single HDMI cable. The sound output is terrific, and so far we haven't had any issue with the wireless rear speakers cutting out. Upscaling works well, although I think that the picture with upscaling to 720p is better than upscaling to 1080i. Relatively simple to operate - supports XM Radio. FM also sounds great.

Cons:
It would be nice if there were multiple HDMI inputs, or at least an HDMI input and a component video input. The remote is a bug-bear to figure out. It took me a long time to figure out how to upscale. It only has optical digital input. The iPod interface doesn't control the iPod. Sometimes DVDs don't play unless the tray is opened and closed once.

Overall:
We purchased the system for about $270, and we think it has been worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for your first Home Theater, November 13, 2008
This review is from: Samsung HT-WX70 - Home Theatre System. (Electronics)
I've had this set for almost a year now and we've been generally quite happy with it. The initial setup of the rear speakers was a bit of a hassle, but once we got them connected we've never had to do it again. We haven't experienced the rear speakers "dropping out" as some other people mention.

I would like to caution anyone who purchases this to be VERY careful not to throw away your wireless dongle. It looks like a small USB memory stick and it's essential for connecting your rear speakers wirelessly. It's easy to miss, since it's in an unmarked plastic blister packed in among the other packaging material.

The only issues we've had are with our Motorola DCT6412 DVR that our cable company provided. We originally had the cable box plugged into the WX70's HDMI in port and the HDMI out going to our TV. When swapping between standard definition and high-definition television channels the screen would go green and sometimes display a blue error box that said "HD Content Protection has been breached. Please use YPbPr instead."

We ended up plugging everything into our TV and using the TV's digital optical audio (TOSLink/SPDIF) to pipe the sound to the Samsung receiver. That works beautifully.

The speakers and receiver work great with my Sony BDP-BX1 BluRay player, including the HDMI in port. Long story short: solid speakers, good value. Workarounds might be necessary if you have a cable box though. Don't throw away the wireless dongle!
