I've been wanting a new flat-panel TV for some time and, though I do make a lot of purchases on-line, I felt like I actually needed to look at a TV in person. My wife and I were looking at the TV's in Wal-mart when another customer pointed out that the better TVs had a higher contrast ratio and he thought that was the most important factor. Sure enough, the one we thought had the best picture was the one with the highest contrast ratio - it was 3200:1, the best 32-inch in the store. (I really wanted something with 1080p resolution, but they only had 720p in the 32" size TVs. We decided to get that one, since we had seen it and felt like we could enjoy it - but they didn't have one in stock...

I came home and began to research. It turns out that there are only a very few 1080p TVs in the 32" model, this being one of them. In looking at the contrast ratio I found that this one was rated at 15,000:1 - almost 5 times better than the best one at Walmart. (High contrast ratio seems to give you darker darks and whiter whites - lower contrast ratios have a milky looking gray where it's supposed to be black...) My research combined with what I saw in the store gave me the confidence to purchase a TV on-line. I settled on the Samsung LN32A550.

The TV arrived in good working order and I had it set up and running within 30 minutes. (The biggest problem was unhooking and moving the old one!) The picture is everything I could have imagined it would be - far better than anything I saw in the store. The crystal clear picture and crisp, well defined images make this simply the best picture I have ever seen on a TV. I saw a bit of a NASCAR race on this unit and the motion was unbelievably smooth - no after images at all.

I debated a bit on giving this unit a five-star rating. I felt like the picture quality so outrated the sound that I had to bump it up a bit. But if sound is an issue you may want to consider this to be a "four-star" unit. While the TV has a built in equalizer function (with some presets based on your listening preferences) I found the sound, even in the best adjustment leaves a lot to be desired. It has a tinny sound much like you would expect from an old transitor radio. I would suggest investing in a good pair of external speakers to enhance this unit. (If you already have a home theatre set-up sound is not an issue anyway...)

So far I'm glad I made this purchase. If Samsung can improve the speakers on this TV they will have the perfect TV!

*****
UPDATE:

OK.... Now that I've owned this thing a few months I'll tell you how it's going:

First, it was pointed out to me in a post that the contrast ratio on 27- and 32-inch TV's was 15,000:1 instead of 30,000:1 as I incorrectly surmissed from the somewhat unclear (to me) product update. I have edited the initial review to reflect the correct information. I'm sorry for any confusion it may have caused. (If you want the higher ratio and have the room, you could consider going with a larger screen size. 15,000: is still a pretty amazing ratio though...)

Overall I am happy to report that I am just as satisfied today as I was the day I first turned it on. I did purchase a set of Creative GigaWorks T40 Premium 2.0 Speakers (available at Amazon.com) for around $125 - and this dramatically improved my viewing experience. (I'm sure the best option would be to use a home theatre set-up - but this unit is in my bedroom...)

I still recommend this TV - just don't expect too much out of the sound - without a little help.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good TV at a Great Price, April 21, 2008
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I bought this last week, and so far, its exceeded all my expectations except in one regard (below). The picture is fantastic, and each input is customizable so you can use one video setting for each device you have plugged in. This is especially handy as it doubles as a PC monitor for me. Some people say you can't tell 1080p quality on a 32" screen. Well I'm here to tell you their wrong. The difference is noticeable, both when using it for my PC and when lying back in bed watching movies. The interface is user-friendly, the remote well laid out, and setup was easy. This brings me to the one flaw in the system: the on-board speakers are tin-y and low-quality. Get a set of external speakers ASAP if you by this set. If you've got a home theatre system already, then this isn't an issue, but be warned, this is one of the worst sounding TV I've ever had. Still, for a picture this good, its worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deffinetly worth the money-However major repair needed just out of warranty!!, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
This was my first television purchase. I wanted a true 1080p high definition television. I didn't want to spend over $1000 and I did some serious shopping between Circuit City, Best Buy, and Target.

I found that the in store guy I bought my television from at Circuit City matched the online price they had listed. At first, one guy tried to sell me it for 1099, but that is not the point of the review, but be careful...do you're home work before purchasing. You could be missing an online sale like I almost did. Also, AAA gives a discount for 8% on purchases over 150 at Circuit City.

The picture clarity in HD is simply amazing. I was watching the Masters on Sunday and the detail was just incredible. It made me very happy with my purchase. The picture clarity with standard non-HD programming is not as good as my old 20" TV. I'm not sure why this is, I assumed it would also be a better picture...I was wrong.

Gaming on this TV is incredible as well. The Playstation 3 HD games are so bright and vivid, it really does make it more fun to play with the picture clarity being so clear. The system hooks into the TV via HDMI cable and was so easy to set up. This TV has three HDMI inputs, two on the back one on the side. I can hook it up to my PC too, though that is not an important feature to me.

***Major circuit board repair caused TV to have no picture****couple of hundred to replace!****

The design is nice and simple. All black with an easy to install TV stand. The remote is big but not to big, with buttons spaced out nicely and the back light turning on each time a button is pushed. Installing this TV was very simple, that was great!

The only negative about this TV is the sound quality from the built in speakers during DVD viewing. They speakers become tin(e) and sound quality is distorted. I recommend investing in a nice home theater system. Sound quality is good while watching TV and gaming.

Overall I would give this TV a 4.5 out of 5. I am very happy with it and its abundance of HDMI inputs. The picture quality is amazing for HD programs and gaming. The contrast isn't the greatest for regular tv viewing and the sound is tin(e)/distorted while watching DVDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner, July 5, 2008
By
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
Bought this TV for my parents bedroom. Having been a Sony man bought a 46 inch Samsung last year, I was expecting a winner and got one. Samsung quite frankly has won me over. The set's review stated the sound was not all that great but frankly I don't view it as a negative. I watched "Fools Gold" on blu ray, as well as other programming, and the sound seems fine. The picture is gorgeous-especially on HD programming.

The only disappointment was that the first set we received was faulty. Amazon was great about taking care of a quick replacement. We did however experience continued problems with shipping(didn't pick up defective set when the new one arrived). Was totally unimpressed with the shipper.I strongly suspect the problem with the first set was damage in shipping.Overall very happy with the purchase.TIP-when delivered INSIST that the delivery person stay 5 mins. to see that the set is functional or tell them they will be taking the set back with them. They CAN do it,you just have to make them WANT to.This simple step would have saved a ton of trouble for us.

4.0 out of 5 stars First HDTV for us, October 9, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
We finally made the plunge and purchased this TV. We use it to watch TV and movies and to screen digital photos. We don't watch sports or use it for games. The picture quality is fantastic. We also purchased an upscaling DVD player (Philips DVP 5992/37, Costco) to go with this TV until Blueray players drop in price. The combo works very well together.

Pros:
-Excellent picture quality
-USB port for viewing (and very limited editing) of photos from a digital camera. You can quickly create an onscreen slide show.
-Automatically communicates with DVD player via HDMI connection (no hunting for the video channel)
-Well written instruction manual
-Flexibility (energy saving modes, ability to change image size, variety of audio modes)
-Easy to read and understand remote

Cons:
-Lateral rotation of TV on stand is limited (maybe 45 degrees). Makes it hard to access the back of the TV if inside cabinetry.
-Does not automatically display all photos in upright position, and you have to go three levels into a menu to do this.

I use this TV to quickly screen photos from my digital camera by loading them through the USB port. I can delete the duds using the TV remote, which is a big timesaver for me (and easier on my eyes than using my computer monitor). The digital photo quality is just stunning when viewed on this TV.

I purchased an HDMI cable through Amazon for connecting the DVD player to the TV, and saved a bundle by comparison to the local vendors.

5.0 out of 5 stars 32" 1080p TV worth the extra?, December 17, 2008
By
Jesse Dover (Providence, RI USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
720 or 1080 for a 32" LCD? Is it worth paying the extra $200 or so for "full HD"? Well after careful review of many TVs before choosing this one I came to the conclusion that it really depends on what you are going to use as a source. And yes you CAN see the difference between the two in only a 32" screen. Some PS3 games are only 720, and others are true 1080p, after looking at both sources seperately the difference is clear. Also take a close look in the background of blu ray movies, and look at the detail of things far far away from the camera. Where in the same movie on DVD those things are blurry, or not so visible.

I already owned a PS3, so the choice was easy. In order to see the true beauty and detail of certain games, and blu ray movies I owned, I needed to get a TV capable of 1080p. I figured why would I even have bought blu ray movies if I was just going to view them on a 720 screen? Waste of money... You might as well watch your old DVDs on a up converter. I also have cox digital cable, which is not close to 1080p. So when I watch basic cable, I am restricted to a 1080i image, which is inferior to the blu ray and PS3 images.

This TV delivers an amazing picture, and requires little configuration to the settings, to see it. Also i doesn't take too much time to turn on, or change inputs like some other LCDs do. There is a setting that allows you to configure the power consumption during standby. Also it is true, the speakers aren't the greatest. But who buys a TV for the sound anyways? Just hook up your reciever and your all set.
So why would you buy a 720 TV? Cause the guy at the store told you that you couldn't see the difference on such a small screen? Or because you truly dont have an HD source? So therefore I only recommend spending a lil extra if you plan on trying to really appreciate the capabilities of this screen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Samsung's cost-cutting and warranty deception!, February 22, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I have two problems with this product, neither of which involves the picture quality, which is excellent and leaves little to desire, when used with a cable box.

First, closed captioning is not always available with certain auxiliary equipment connections, due to Samsung's cutting costs and failing to provide the necessary tuning capability.

And second, Samsung warns the customer that the warranty may not be honored if "screen-burn" occurs, due to prolonged viewing of stationary images! Supposedly, Samsung's recommended viewing practice is to adjust the image size to fill up the screen, so that the black side images do not appear for more than 5% of the total viewing time! This is a totally impractical requirement, given that most of the images (particularly the commercials) are made in the 4:3 (standard) format. Not only that, but a large percentage of images presented on an HD channel were made before the advent of HD TV, and are thus in the 4:3 format.

What Samsung is doing on the inside cover of the instruction manual (the warranty) page is threatening the customer about trying to return a "burned-screen" set which was not viewed with Samsung's virtually impossible recommendations.

The strange part of this business is that "screen burn" with an LCD TV set (as opposed to a plasma TV) is not really an issue, since it supposedly can be fixed by techniques which Samsung does not want to talk about. Note that LCD computer monitors do not seem to have this "problem" that Samsung is trying to make a warranty fuss about. This whole business does not make sense, and Samsung's evasiveness and stonewalling is not helpful.

For these two reasons, I can only rate this product at three stars, despite the excellent picture quality. The problem here is Samsung as a company; it needs to get its act together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great HDTV, September 9, 2008
By
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
The LN-32A550 SAMSUNG is fantastic. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't tell the difference between a 720p and a 1080p in this size TV because you can.

The HDTV programs are great. Digital programs are very good and SD programs are above average depending on the channel (can't wait for February).

Blacks are deep, whites are bright and flesh tones are natural.

There are more setting in the menue for picture and sound than any other HDTV I looked at.

3 HDMI ports and all the other ports you could want in a TV this size including a USB port for showing pictures and firmware updates.

The sound is only average but I have it in my bedroom. If you are going to put it in a family room or living room you might consider adding speakers.

Swival stand and backlit remote are great features.

The simple piano black finish and lack of chrome make this TV look sleek and modern.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good TV/Monitor, April 29, 2008
This review is from: Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I got this TV few days ago, its a good TV and monitor for small room.

Negative
> PIP is only for TV tuner/cable and other source, no can do on PC source and HDMI at the same time, and between HDMI's (ie HDMI1 and HDMI2, HDMI1 and HDMI3, etc)
> Samsung put a 10w speaker, the same as my 40 inch Samsung 1080P TV/Monitor, while its a good speaker, well, its better than 5w, BUT it doesnt have the deflective/curvish bottom the deflect sound wave into the frount of the TV
> Power button is on the side, I'd prefer the front power button
> Only 3 HDMI, was expecting 4.

Positive
> Wise.Link, while my previous Samsung TV has USB port, its only used for servicing the TV (repair). Wise.link now read files, like sound files and photos, it can also be used to update firmwares.
> Good black, this TV has the best blacks I have seen on TV, its really dark. Colors is good too.
> P&P, 2 source split together side by side
> headphone port, (yup, I'm a egghead).
> Auto-adjustment feature
> Since this is a Full HD 1080P, this is a good monitor, more pixel, primarily I use it as my main monitor for my PC. It has a good picture on Blu-Ray movies and on PS3 games, at least viewed 4-5 feet away.
> remote has now backlight, tho I prefer the old remote 'cuz it has more buttons, with the new remote, you have to dig down to the menu to activate stuff like PIP and sleep/timer features (I read this new remote now has short-cut buttons but I have not use it yet).
> If you have previous Samsung LCD TV, they kinda put a really bright blue light/LED infront of the TV, with this TV, they replace it with dim-ish light and the sound they used on powering up/off is a bit soft now.
