Full HD 1080P

full HD 1080P Full HD, or 1080p, contains 1.5 times more scanning lines than conventional HD TVs. More scanning lines mean more pixels, more details and a better picture. The new Samsung LCD TV with resolution that is approximately 2 times greater than conventional HDTVs, creating the most perfect picture imaginable. Samsung's 1080p panel uses a new high-speed liquid crystal to cut response time to 6ms (milliseconds).

Wide Color Enhancer 2/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

Wide Color Enhancer 2 The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72 percent of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp backlights to give you 92 percent coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung's Wide Color Enhancer 2 technology delivers more brilliant colors by expanding the gamut of color expression into a third axis, creating a 3D diagram of luminance. This creates a dynamic display of on-screen color and allows traditionally weak colors, such as green and blue, to look vivid and deep. In addition, red colors are enhanced to provide strong colors across the spectrum and the perfect balance of RGB.

70,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio

70,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio 70,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio will give you a picture better than you ever thought possible, with whiter whites, blacker blacks and a nearly infinite subtlety of gradations in between. As two of the most important determining factors in overall picture quality, contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights in this latest generation LCD panel. Samsung's new LCD TV's give the most stunning realistic picture quality ever.

Touch of Color

Touch of Color In 2008, Samsung created its unique Touch of Color (ToC) design, which uses dual-injection molding to coat a translucent, colored surface to achieve an attractive crystalline appearance. The latest evolution of Samsung's ToC design begins with a deep piano black bezel that fades into distinct chrome that finishes as light ruby highlights. The intensity of the color subtly changes depending upon the viewing angle, and further accentuates these TV's slim bezels.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I am agreeing with other reviewers that this is an excellent product with only two attributes that were not as expected:
- Touch of color really is only a "touch". Without light shining directly on it the frame looks completely black
- Sound quality is poor. The right speaker has a tendency to ring at certain frequency even at low volume.

Picture quality is excellent; the TV set is not too heavy and looks good.

The Samsung LN73B550 is a beautiful TV for an affordable price. If you're in the market for a LCD less than 40" then I would highly recommend this one. The colors are sharp and very crisp. Setup out of the box was extremely easy. My only quibble might be the sound quality, but I think that may be due to it sitting in an enclosed entertainment center. Samsung has become a leader in the LCD market for a reason and this TV is a testament to that fact.

Got this instead of the A550, which was well reviewed but criticized for its speakers. This one both looks great and sounds good as well. It's sound is nothing compared to my theater system, but I have no complaints at all on it. Picture is beautiful.

I am very happy with the Samsung LN37B550 LCD TV (and the Samsung Blu-Ray Player BD-P1600).

I do not understand how you could ever think a "Red Touch of Color" bezel means "ambient light" or even that the bezel has a "light source." As for having the Red Touch of Color on the bezel, I feel it is meaningless for most people anyways because it just helps distinguish between the 2008 LNxxA550 and the 2009 LNxxB550.

After having looked at Consumer Reports and other sites for ratings, I "settled" on the value of the B550 and did not feel the extra expense to get the B650 (with double the refresh rate) was worth the extra money. I can say that I could see the difference of 120Hz versus 60Hz refresh rate at a retailer, but for home use it was not worth it.

Shipping for me was as quoted and I really appreciate the scheduling of delivery, that way you do not have the TV sitting out for someone to steal.

I have not used the speakers on the TV since I have an external sound system. I do have issues with volume "leveling" when using Pandora on the Blu-Ray Player, but I do not believe it is related to the TV.

I wish there was actually an internal "battery" that kept the clock when there is a power-outage but that is just another component that could fail or need to be replaced so it did not diminish my rating.

I did HDTV research for more than 1 yr before I settled for this beautiful quality Samsung LN37B550. Absolutely worth every penny. This TV has the best picture quality stand-alone when compared with other sets. Now you can tell me all about contrast ratios, or viewing modes, or viewing distances, this and that, whatever and whatever, okay. To me, my eyes and ears don't lie. All the TV broadcast programs look absolutely stunning, and my place sounds already like a home theater before any stereo system set up is made. I also hooked up my Core 2 Duo (3 GHz) Dell using this Samsung as my primary monitor. The picture is outstanding. I 100% recommend this set. I was debating between a Sony, Sharp (there were a couple VERY good deals at both Costco and Bestbuy 1080p 40" for $700 or something), Panasonic, Toshiba, and Samsung, now yes perhaps you will spend like $50 or more on a Samsung, but TV quality, both inner and outer beauty, just cannot be beat.

I am the most indecisive person in the world, and within the past 6 months of browsing HDTVs and not being able to make a decision, I finally decided to jump in and buy this TV set. I've only had it for one day, but I'll continue to update this review as time goes on to make sure people get an idea of the long term aspects of this television.

First off, this TV is perfect for homes with small to medium living spaces. I have a living room that is roughly 15 by 15 feet, and this accompanies the room perfectly. Even after I set it up, I thought to myself that 42 inches would have been a bit too overpowering. Anyways, this TV puts my old 26 inch Westinghouse to shame. Although...I think almost any TV blows away Westinghouse television sets.

Anyways, right off the bat this TV is beautiful. It lacks the 120Hz processing, but in my own personal opinion, the only time 120Hz is beneficial is if you are watching sports or documentaries (Speaking of Documentaries, Planet Earth looks absolutely incredible on this TV regardless of the 120hz). All of the games I played today off of my PS3 looked much more polished and finely detailed, and Bluray (Planet Earth) was equally as incredible. I'll likely be giving some action movies a go on this TV tomorrow night, and I'll make sure to update how the TV handles fast moving scenes. However, I have a feeling that it will be great.

Before I close this, there was a review that I read which said that the television had poor viewing angles and back lighting. I just want to claim that when the sun went down, the backlighting on the TV is not nearly how the reviewer made it out to be, and the poor viewing angles are hardly poor. Do they exist? Yes, but barely.
