Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung raises the bar again for LCD technology with its 40-inch LN-S4692D HDTV, which provides a high performance, large format LCD that also includes an integrated HDTV tuner as well as connectivity options for your PC and portable digital audio players. It has a glossy, piano-black cabinetry with a space-saving bottom-mounted speaker design. It sits atop a swivel stand that provides a +/-15-degree swivel that makes it easy to move the screen for optimal viewing. Additionally, the stand can be removed for wall-mounting via optional VESA compatible hardware.

The LCD panel incorporates the latest video technology from Samsung, all of which results in a richly vibrant color picture that's stunningly realistic. With the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL), this set provides 92 percent of the NTSC standard color map--where typical LCD screens only cover 72 percent of this spectrum. The result is a superior color gamut than any other LCD TVs on the market for a more vivid color replication. Samsung's new innovative S-PVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment) panel technology allows you to see any display clearly with it the 178-degree wide viewing angle--horizontally and vertically.

The LN-S4692D features an unbelievable 5000:1 contrast ratio, 500 cd/m2 brightness rating (for brighter whites, deeper blacks, and every shade in between), a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution (for a widescreen 16:9 screen aspect ratio), 178-degree viewing angle, and a super-fast 8ms (millisecond) response time, which minimizes blurring of moving images and is especially helpful for sports and action movies.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. Other convenience features include:

  • Picture-in-picture (PIP) enables convenient simultaneous viewing of TV programs and video or PC sources.
  • Built-in image scaler to handle inputs from a variety of digital and analog audio/video sources.
  • Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
  • Auto volume leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.
  • Clock on/off timer allows you to set a time to turn off the TV so it doesn't stay on all night, or wake you up in the morning.
  • Multi-lingual on-screen displays in English, Spanish or French.
It also offers support for a range of Samsung MP3 players and other portable digital audio devices, with an RS-232 port enabling you to navigate the player's content on-screen with the LCD remote by connecting the device to the TV via an RS-232 cable (included). And Samsung worked closely with Microsoft to create a special Game Mode that optimizes image quality, sound and response time for more realistic video game play--with just a single touch of a button. The Game Mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response and enhances the sounds of your games.

You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the dual HDMI or single component connections. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. This set utilizes Samsung's Dual Acoustic Chamber System technology, which isolates each woofer and tweeter in its own chamber. DACS is a revolutionary, computer-simulated technology that enhances low-range sound performance, sharpens mid-to-high-range sound quality, and improves overall sound clarity. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total). It offers the following connection options:

  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • S-Video: 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 1 input
  • HDMI: 2 inputs
  • PC: 1 D-Sub15 input
  • RF: 2 inputs
  • Sound monitor output: 1
  • Digital optical audio output: 1
  • Headphone: 1 (side)
  • RS232 port: 1

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent set for the price, November 21, 2006
By
Enigma (Palo Alto, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samsung LNS4692D 46-Inch LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I have owned this set for 2-weeks now. No buyer's remorse. Excellent set I recommend. I spent several weeks evaluating and comparing many, many sets and determined this unit was the one. Went to several electronics stores to compare picture, features, looks, etc. Actually used the 'Call Me' feature on Amazon, which was an amazing experience with an immediate callback from a very helpful person who knew more about the various LCD TVs than anyone at 'regular' stores.

I decided that 1080i was all I needed at this point since the only thing in 1080p is blue-ray right now (the players will play in 720p/1080i though). Besides, my 20/15, lasik-enhanced eyes cannot tell the difference anyway.

The brightness and contrast ratio are excellent on this set. At first, I was a bit concerned only dynamic contrast was advertised, but compared side-by-side w/a JVC unit that had 1250 static and Samsung was right there.

Also, as a matter of practicality, decided I didn't need a cablecard for three reasons: 1) the current standard will be obsolete w/in a year, 2) my cable box is the size of a small book, and 3) may be going back to satellite soon anyway. Do you really need a set w/the current cablecard?

As for the looks, there isn't a better looking set out there. This is one good looking set and the people who have seen it are impressed. Big 'wow' factor. Everyone thinks it's a $5K unit.

I'm probably biased since I'm a huge fan of Amazon and have been for years, but there may be sites with this unit a little cheaper, but they probably aren't authorized dealers. If you go with Amazon, you can't go wrong and don't have to give your personal info to some no-name site. You can trust what you are getting and the service. For me, having a valid warranty and the trust is worth a few extra bucks (the differences I saw weren't big).

Oh yeah - a little secret: Samsung gives you a 3-month warranty extension if you register the product w/in 10-days of purchase. Not bad.

Now, what to do with that 53" rear projection...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome HDTV with nice, dark blacks, November 1, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung LNS4692D 46-Inch LCD HDTV (Electronics)
OCT, 2006

The usual dilemma, what type of HDTV to get. I needed an HDTV to do it all. Watch DVD's, play XBOX360 & view HD as well as SD satellite signals. Furthermore, I dont have the room for DLP & I didnt want to step up to 1080P as this setup was to be for the basement where my 14 & 5 year old boys do most of their viewing (as well as myself). 720P it was!

Because of the large amount of video gaming I chose to stay away from the Plasma TV's due to burn in concerns . The basement being dark was perfect for plasma but I chose LCD anyway. The Samsung LN-S4692D LCD was chosen. 8ms response time and nice deep, dark blacks. And a VERY bright picture. When the white EA screen came up on NCAA07 I didnt have any lights on and could (and did) read the instruction manual by it.

The picture of this TV is beautiful. The reds can be overpowering but a quick change to the settings can alleviate the vivid colors that it comes default set at. The whites are very bright white, the blacks from what I can tell are deep and dark as already mentioned. i am not a professional videophile but the blacks look black to me, not dark grey.

We have played Fightnight 3, Elder scrolls oblivion, Ncaa07, Dead or alive4, Call of Duty 2. All look exceptional. I have only noticed a slight motion issue a few times while watching my sons playing. 8ms response seems to be good for the quick motion of video games.

We have watched the following DVDs: The Incredibles, Madagascar, King Kong & Titanic. They all looked great, including the dark scenes which 3 of these 4 moives have an abundance of.

The one area where this HDTV doesnt have an exceptional picture is SDTV signals. The picture is actually bad for this. Very blurry. Then again, if you buy an HDTV are you really doing it for the SD experience?!

I have this TV hooked up to the Yamaha RX-V1600 A/V Reciever and out to a 7.1 Axiom speaker setup. Upconverting Sony DVPNS75H DVD player and the Xbox360 round out the system. HDMI works flawlessly throughout the setup. the TV is wallmounted with the "30" to 50" universal tilt wall mount" and all wires are hidden in wall. great setup and no problems. The kids love it and the neighborhood kids use our basement as the location of choice for gaming.

EDIT DECEMBER 8, 2006. After using this TV for a few months and getting to know it better I have discovered that the blacks are good "for a LCD" but are not near what plasma or definitely CRT brings to the table.

Watching the "Cars" DVD in the very beginning when it shows a scene then goes to a black scene in repetition and I think Lightning McQueen is narrating is a perfect example of another issue. Ghost Images. Once the image goes to a black screen you see ghost images of the previous image. Also at the end of DVD's when the credits are shown on a black background the name or title will leave a ghost image until the black background changes to another color. It looks somewhat like a burn in on a plasma although on this LCD it goes away once the black screen changes to another color. Nothing permanant but for those that are detail oriented or are looking for the "perfect LCD" this may be a little nagging issue. I should mention that I have only noticed this while playing DVD's on my upconverting Sony DVD player, on HD programming I havent seen it (isnt that strange?).

These are the only two issues I really have with this TV, other than the previously mentioned SDTV reception being poor, and both are related to the ability of the set to display the color black. Other than that I find this to be a great HDTV for High Def programming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great price Great TV, June 30, 2006

This review is from: Samsung LNS4692D 46-Inch LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I found this LCD on Amazon for $1000 less than any other dealer I could find. I use it mainly for Xbox 360 (no need to worry about burn in, since it's an LCD) and movies and I couldn't be happier. I have Directv HD and the standard definition channels do have some artifacts, but I blame that on Directv's terrible compression. HD channels look great.

If you want the best monitor for the lowest price, get this one! You wont be compromising anything.
