5.0 out of 5 stars Great UMPC, great for a CarPC, February 27, 2007

This review is from: Samsung Q1 NP-Q1-V002 7-inch Ultra Mobile PC (Intel Pentium M ULV Processor, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Windows XP) (Personal Computers)
I bouth one a few months back, my idea was to use this as a CarPC. The idea is to use software such as "Road Runner" to play my MP3, Videos, and function as a car navigation system. As an added bonus I can remove the Samsung Q1 from my car and cary it with me on trips, around the house, or in the yard with my WiFi network. Some say that the UMPC is not very usefull yet I have found many uses. I think these PCs will become more popular as the prices come down. I looked at other models of UMPC and found this models had the best bang for your buck.

This is a very nice handy computer. I've only had a few days to mess with it so far but it has met all my expectations and then some. Just for the heck of it, I gave it a go with the Office 2007 products and it seems to handle it just fine at this point. It's been easy to sync with my regular laptop especially using the included USB data cable. The bluetooth service has easily bonded with everything I've asked of it. I like the AVS NOW feature which enables me to access pictures(I will mention the display is great!), music (and I better mention great stereo sound here), etc. without booting into windows. Now this grandmother has easy access to grandchild pics and the photo album is no bigger or heavier than the one my own mother carried in her purse to "show-off" the grandkids! Wireless access has been good and setup was effortless.

It's not terribly fast, but it's not annoying slow either. It's been able to handle multi-tasking... bluetooth to phone & stero headphones while running MP3 player, sticky notes, Outlook, and Excel 2007, without getting too bogged down. That's good enough for me.

The handwritting recognition is quite good as well. I was amazed it picked up on my scribbles so easily! I did also purchase the keyboard and organizer so it does make getting a larger document done much quicker although the Q1 is functional enough to do the job without.

I am really enjoying having access to an easily portable PC (yes, it's a genuine PC) in a package small enough and easy to use. I was skeptical about paying this much for this device but it looks like it is going to be functional enough for my needs to remove the "buyers remorse" I felt before receiving my order.

Cons: Dialog boxes will sometimes run off the bottom of the screen, requiring user-prowess and judicious use of the res switcher button.
Battery life with the included standard battery is only mediocure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Near perfect for its intended niche, September 6, 2007
This review is from: Samsung Q1 NP-Q1-V002 7-inch Ultra Mobile PC (Intel Pentium M ULV Processor, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Windows XP) (Personal Computers)
When I found my PDA and its accessories taking up more and more space in my backpack, I realized that something needed to change. I really like my Palm T3, but it was getting ready for the tekkie boneyard. The T3's replacement would have big shoes to fill. When I researched the new crop of PDAs, the subject of UMPCs kept popping up. The more I read about the Q1 the more sense it made. Once I got my hands on it, I was sold. There has been absolutely no buyer's remorse since. The unit is well made, the controls are very ergonomically thought-out, it's just big enough to conveniently accompany me whereever I need to go, but not too big to be burdensome, even with the optional keyboard and "organizer" case (which I highly recommend). It does everything I need it to do efficiently and while it isn't a speed demon, it has been reliable and dependable thus far. I remember only one instance when it froze, necessitating removal and reinstallation of the battery. In my opinion, the only real negative issue with the Q1 is battery life, but that is an issue common to many tekkie toys these days. And did I mention the drool factor? All my buds now have "Q1 envy"!
