an excellent consumer model, a fair professional one,

This review is from: Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose (Personal Computers)
The P2370HD is an exceptional monitor for people with modest demands of their display. On the plus side, it has very good colour for a TN-type panel (more on this in a second), absolutely fantastic connection options, one of te fastest displays in current availability and a bright, vibrant picture which is only offset by a merely-average black level and some backlight bleed with extremely dark images (helped by Dynamic Contrast but not in all situations). It lacks a pivot, a terrible omission, but is still fairly stable on its (non-adjustable) base. It connects to 4:3 and 16:9 sources, even composite and component SD sources, as well as HDMI, DVI and VGA sources (but DualLink DVI-D is strongly advised), and the 1920x1080 native resolution is perfect for 16:9 movies and BluRay.
Thus, if you simply need a very good TV or home computer display, stop reading now and get out your credit card. However, this is only a *fair* monitor for professional photo or graphics work. Like all TN displays, it suffers from slight but significant changes in gamma when viewed more than a few degrees off-axis, and even at 6500 K has a teensy pink tinge which can be compensated for with good colour calibration, but with a corresponding reduction in gamut. Despite sRGB's 2.2 gamma, this monitor performs much better closer to 1.8 or to its native gamma of 2.7+. There is also faint banding on grey ramp tests which is to be expected from a 6-bit display, again compensatable by compressing the dynamic range, but then it also takes away from the contrast range the monitor has to offer. Incidentally, don't use Dynamic Contrast when connected to your PC or Mac, it's really very distracting. Adjust the contrast and brightness yourself. Note that all of the things I've complained about will go completely unnoticed by probably 90% of customers and this monitor outperforms a great many lesser displays which show problems similar to this much worse, which is why I gave it the four-star rating. However, for the 10% of us who need a colour-perfect display and can tolerate a slightly slower speed, an IPS panel would be strongly advised, even for a display that is (for a TN) as good as this one. While I'm keeping mine to use as -- surprise! -- a television set, I'll be buying an IPS panel for my photo work. But everybody else will love it.

This review is from: Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose (Personal Computers)
Yeah that's right. I saw 1080p for $250 and jumped on it. I NEVER use this "monitor" as a monitor, so I cannot review that aspect of the P2370HD. There are only a handful of professional reviews on this product; the most notable being the awful CNET reviews and stupid youtube video showoffs and unboxings. Ignore that crap. Read on so you don't have to read 500 more customer reviews on google.
Lemme start out with a true analysis of what everyone says is good or bad about this Monitor/HDTV. A lot of people complain about the sound. Well at first it does sound a little muffled, but just slightly. There is an option in the sound menu called HD surround. Even though I don't own an external speaker set, it makes the sound noticeably better for some reason. It also makes me feel like wealthy audiophiles who have an extra 600 dollars for Bose speakers were trying to find SOMETHING to complain about (plus usually in their reviews they talk about this TV a "kitchen TV!"). I love this TV's sound personally. The next complaint that I hear from a LOT of people makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. "This product is more of a monitor than an HDTV." NONSENSE. This HDTV's picture is beautiful. I use this exclusively as an HDTV for my cable box and my PS3 via HDMI. With the PS3, blu-ray's and games look brilliant. Uncharted 2 ad Gran Turismo 5 Prologue look so stunningly beautiful that I sometime lose/die because I just want to observe the wonderful graphics. As for the cable box, it looks great as well. Especially cartoons. In HD cartoons look incredible. Some movies look better than others (all in HD but some look sub HD. It depends on the station. Trust me I know what NON HD looks like). But movies in blu-ray (PS3) are all just AWESOME. THe colors are better than any TV, Ive ever seen. The only bad side is that every time I want to switch from my PS3 to watch TV, I have to switch HDMI cables because there is only one port. Only one complaint that I can agree with to some extent is this. "The viewing angles are extremely limited." Its true. I am lucky enough to have my bed positioned to the exact height and angle where I can be DIRECTLY in front of the screen rather than below, above, or off to the left, right. The TV does not pivot forward, so do not buy if you have a high shelf/stand intended for use with this HDTV. I'd recommend using a small computer desk (since most use this as a computer that goes without saying). The point of my review was to convince all who are skeptical of this product to not be afraid to jump on such an opportunity. I have not had the dreaded "turn off and on by itself problem" either. IT IS A SMART PURCHASE IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT AS JUST AN HDTV, LIKE MYSELF. I saved 100 dollars by buying a superior, larger product, rather than sticking to the standard 22 inch 720p Samsung HDTVs that cost 350 dollars for some odd reason. I've waited half a year for this TV, and after reading COUNTLESS reviews over ad over and over, and thinking about buying the Samsung 2333HD or the T220hd, I just went for the best and came out with a major WIN. BTW, this review is coming from a Sony PlayStation fan-boy who prefers quality in gaming and movies. I assure you that this does EVERYTHING that any other HDTV of it size can do, plus the computer option. The only downside is the viewing angles. BUY IT (unless you are buying the Samsung 2333HD which has an 10000:1 DMC with an annoying blue light in the front lol)(Or the T220hd which had an oddly shaped screen). *****IMPORTANT UPDATE***** Yeah, it's May 12th 2011 and my TV has a problem. My HDMI port is broken. If you are planning on buying this TV, CONTINUE READING THIS. As I mentioned there is only 1 HDMI port. Every day, twice a day, I switch HDMI cables to watch TV or play on the PS3. I had no idea that HDMI ports weren't made for constant use, meaning that the constant tugging and connecting killed the port. I lift weights and I'm heavy-handed so I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, but had I known this, I would have immediately purchased an HDMI splitter alongside the TV. I now realize that this monitor doubles as a TV, not the other way around, hence only 1 HDMI port. Too bad I had to learn all this the hard way, and to put the icing on the cake, my Xbox is being shipped as I write and I'm out of money and a TV! I have 5 Xbox game manuals to read over and over now. Great. Just great. I wish I had someone to warn me like I'm warning you lol. I promise to update the situation whenever I get the cash to run down to Geek Squad headquarters. *****UPDATE May 15th, 2011***** OK, so I settled with the PS3 component cables to play some games. Specifically the Sony cables because off the wall components tend to SUCK, unless its HDMI. I am glad to inform you that I see ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between HDMI and component on this television. Yes the sharpness and colors are EXACTLY the same so having such a small HD set like this has its advantages. TRUST ME. I was scared to death that my picture would look slightly washed out or fuzzy. Just set the max settings for your PS3 to 1080i and you're SET. Do not let anyone tell you components ON THIS TV look worse. They're lying. I'm so satisfied in fact, that I've decided to live without the HDMI port.......FOREVER. I will update when I'm able to buy my Xbox VGA cables and my DVI-HDMI adapter plug. I'll talk about both at once so it might be a few weeks. I sure am glad I am able to test and utilize every HD capable port on my HDTV/Monitor! *****Update May 17th, 2011***** I just received my DVI-HDMI adapter so that I could utilize the DVI port on the TV but use an HDMI cable from my cable box. Apparently when the HDMI port dies (at least on this monitor) the DVI goes as well. I tried the adapter from my computer and PS3 as well and it will not work. In addition, while it says no signal, I actually get the dreaded "turn off and on by itself" problem that has been happening to a lot of people with this monitor. When I switch back to component everything is fine. Fortunately, the VGA works just fine. After my HDMI port died, my intention was to hook up the PS3 via component (which is beautiful and totally worth it BTW), my cable box via HDMI/DVI adapter, and the Xbox through VGA. The point was that I wouldn't have to constantly switch cords and eventually kill the port with my heavy handedness like I did with the HDMI port. The fact that my DVI port is also dead now changes everything. I have 2 choices, both of which suck. I either go ahead and buy an Xbox VGA, but I'll have to constantly switch 10 component cables (TV and PS3). The other option is to get one of those expensive switcher boxes that spice between 3 or more components, and pray that none of the pictures lose quality. I've taken off a star now. This is just too much. I'll update when I shell out even more cash for things that'll hopefully bring back my monitor to full use. GET A WARRANTY NO MATTER WHAT.

I bought this monitor to replace my old Samsung 17" monitor.
It has been a wonderful replacement so far. A couple things to note: 1. The monitor does not have a height adjustment but it does have front to back tilt built into the stand. 2. Make sure to securely tighten the screw under the base when attaching the stand to the monitor several people have complained the stand is wobbly if you do not tighten this screw tightly it will be. This is a great monitor do yourself a favor and buy it.

I wanted an HDTV for my desk so that I could work while watching the business networks in the morning. I have a 22 inch Samsung and a 19 inch Viewsonic. I build Web sites making two monitors a necessity. When I bought the Samsung 23 I was in a hurry. I didn't even notice that I could use it as a monitor.
I connected the unit to my computer just to see the resolution. It is terrific. Unfortunately I need to use this thing as a TV only but I can say the resolution, colors and everything else are fantastic. Highly recommended product.

Purchased monitor [...]worth every penny. Went from a 19" and my desktop almost doubled with the 1920x1080 resolution. Has a built-in TV tuner to hookup an antenna for local TV in high def. Only complaint, the monitor stand is not adjustable nor does it swivel. Another minus (in my opinion) is the lack of a built-in USB hub, which my prior did have, and it was convenient.

I bought this 1080p TV/Monitor 2 months ago, and it has performed extremely well.
I have a PS3, so i first used it to play games and watch TV Series. Be careful to pick your cables when connecting this monitor. For example, the very first time i played on my PS3, things didn't look good at all. I was using an HDMI/HDMI cable. The colors were very bright, and the image was just so off.. but ridiculously off. I was shocked that it produced such a lame picture quality. I grabbed the instructions, and tried to calibrate it, thinking that maybe playing with it a bit would achieve a better picture... and i was never able to adjust it to something decent. I was even thinking of returning it. BUT then i remembered i had an HDMI/DVI cable lying around somewhere. I hooked it up, and wow, what a difference. No longer did the image look super bright, nor did the colors appear off. Everything looked perfect. I have used that cable ever since. But that means that you need external speakers for the sound.. although i don't know if there's another cable that can help you produce the sound from the tv. I also have a ' Macbook Pro ' and i'm using it with the Monitor right now as i type. I am using the same HDMI/DVI cable from my PS3. The first time i connected my Macbook to the monitor, the quality of the image didn't come out as nice as looking directly to my Macbook's screen, but then i discovered something out... i closed the laptop's lid, the image would "reset", and everything looked super crisp. With the lid open, the image would not fill the whole screen, and everything looked distorted, or blurry. I was so relieved to see the drastic change with the lid closed :) So there you have it.. a little disappointed at first, but then it turned out perfect. Many people would have returned it within just 5 mins of use. This TV/Monitor also has a lot of options for adjusting stuff.. every port has different options. For example, when i plug in my Macbook, and turn on the Settings with the Remote, i get "Modes" such as TEXT, INTERNET, ENTERTAINMENT, DYNAMIC CONTRAST.. when i plug in my PS3, i get stuff like MOVIE mode, etc. Sound is OK i guess.. i almost never use the TV's sound, because i have external speakers. I used it once while i connected the monitor to watch normal TV. I would recommend this TV/Monitor if you get the HDMI/DVI cable.

I bought this mainly for a monitor thinking I could do two things at once, like keep the tv on and work on the computer. It works just like I hoped, maybe better. I open SageTV (or sometimes WinTV) on one half of monitor and do my internet or other work on the other half. Was able to get rid of a stand-alone TV and free up some desk space. It also makes a great TV all by itself when I switch to just that mode. It picks up three HDTV channels without an antenna but an HDTV antenna is my next purchase.
My only regret is not buying a 24 or 25 inch monitor, but this one seems to be a nice size that's not too big for my desk, but big enough to do all that I need.

I was in a market for a small LCD for something next to my laptop. So I was looking at the TV section and didn't fine many 1080p at this size and the price were like a 100 more than a 720p sets of the same size. I was also thinking most TV has HDMI so I would just hook my laptop Displayport with a converter:Display Port To HDmi Adapter VGA M/f Cable (no displayport here) to it and have dual screen.
TV: Performance is as good or better than most set I saw in the store. This has better price and spec compare to Samsung own 22" LN22b640, lN22a450 or LN22b360 models. The color is brighter and much sharper than the regular 22" TV set in this range. Most of those LN model spec are 720p, 15k contrast ratio 8ms response rate while this model has 1080p, 30k contrast ratio and 5ms response ratio. The design is similar to my larger 40" Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color and the interface and menu are like most Samsung TV without the 120hz motion flow feature. There is only one hdmi input compare to 2 or 3 for a regular set, but it has DVI, VGA, antenna/ cable, component, composite and a digital out so you are cover on most inputs(no s-video, but manufactures are phasing that out). The remote is a regular TV remote with no secondary buttons for other device and no backlight which is fine. Computer LCD: Well the TV and computers input makes this a better buy if you decide to use your LCD for other use in the future. At 1980x1080p the image is amazingly sharper then my old 22" LG with 1680x1050 resolutions. So the screen is a movie 16:9 rather then most computer widescreen at 16:10. My photos I taken at higher resolution on my Nikon looks sharper on here then the LG. Also the lower image file is smaller and is not stretched out. So I have the option to connect this to my laptop now. The problem with laptop display driver is it only looks good if you match the LCD with the laptop native resolution. My Lenovo laptop is 1680x1050 so the image is stretch on the Samsung P2370HD. If I do 1680 on the laptop and 1920 on the Samsung it looks worst for some reason. I had the same problem with my old Dell laptop at 1600x1200 and the LG at 1680x1050 it doesn't look right. But if you connect this to your computer, which I did also it looks amazing with the resolution at a full 1920x1080p. I was thinking of using it for just my computer now. I think if you are in a market for a small TV or a 22" LCD for the computer, this is the best buy and the best of both worlds. I have a Samsung TV for 6-8 months and have no problem, nor did my LG Computer monitor. The glass design is very modern. The only thing that is a small problem if the base and stand were stiffer and can be adjusted better. There is only a small tilt, where most computer monitors can tilt more, has a swivel base and height adjustment, but this doesn't. It comes with a 6' HDMI cable also. I tested this on a laptop via Displayport, PS3 via hdmi, computer via DVI and over air antenna and it past or equal all my expectations.

This review is from: Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose (Personal Computers)
It seems capable of picking up all Digital Signals from my cable company without a box. It seems like a very worth while interface for all your entertainment needs, if you sort out what inputs to use for each of your devices you can have a computer a ps3 and any other video game clearly connected to this all at once. This means the only thing it seems to lack is a second HDMI connection location. But being as I do not plan to have to need one it does not seem all that great a problem. It does however have both a VGA and a DVI connection spot for your monitor and in theory you could connect and use more then one computer to this TV. It can also take formats of cable input in forms of STD,HRC, and IRC thou for this information it's imperative when programing the channels on the box to ask your cable provider the broadcast frequency to make sure you have the right type of channel form programed for best picture quality. I have yet to connect many other devices to it yet but I plan to hook my computer to it next. I hope maybe it helps remove a lot of lag from some of my games in increase over all performance if so that is a plus. Other wise it looks great other wise, because its an HDtv it looks a little grainy with standard forms of input meaning none digital signals but as a whole it looks pretty great.I Hope everyone finds it to be a every useful and affective device and I find that its well priced in many places.

Fix The HDMI-HDMI "Screen Looks Awful" Problem,
By Chaz In Montana (Bozeman) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose (Personal Computers)
Hey All, It's been mentioned before, but I thought I'd bring it up again for the sake of folks looking to buy this now. I want to repost a quick "how to" here on fixing a serious image problem when you use an HDMI cable from your PC to drive the P2370HD (or any other Samsung TV) as a computer monitor. When first hooked up, text appears to be surrounded by some white border, and it looks like heck. The Fix is very simple.
On the TV Menu, scroll down to the "Source List", arrow over ">" so Source List is highlighted, now arrow down "V" so "Edit Name" is highlighted, now arrow over again ">" to see the list, scroll down to highlight "HDMI", arrow over ">", now scroll to select either the "PC" or "DVI PC" options instead of the "--" option, Ta Daaaaaaaaaaa, press "Exit" on your remote. Your monitor should look mucho better. In short, edit the name of the HDMI input to read PC instead of --, this changes the way the P2370HD displays the image in a dramatic way. This TV/Monitor Rocks by the way! Love it! Buy It! |
