Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

This is not as large as you might think. The overall size of this is nearly the same as my Samsung HP-S5053 50-Inch Plasma HDTV. The difference is that the old plasmas have a very large thick bezel and this has a very thin boarder - thus reducing its overall size.

To be clear, this absolutely has full widescreen 16:9 capability. It is HD 1080p compliant. Some widescreen movies are shot in 2.35:1, so those will still have black bars at the top and bottom. Maybe this is what the other reviewer was referring to.

The picture is very high quality here - much better than my 50" plasma. The blacks are very deep and I haven't seen any real evidence of ghosting.

The features on this are very full, but I don't use my Plasma for much more than a simple monitor - I run everything through an AV receiver. I access Netflix and other web apps through my LG BD570 Network Blu-ray Disc Player.

This is not 3D capable.

Oh, by the way, a note on model numbers: The PN58C500 is really the same as the Samsung PN58C550 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black), but was released for Black Friday deals with a new model number and - I believe - one less HDMI input than the 550. I believe it is otherwise the same set as the 550. This is not last years model. Last years models had a B instead of a C in the model number, ie. PN58B. . .

Be careful to know who your seller is. I bought this when the seller was Amazon and got free shipping, not someone else. It switches back and forth from time to time.

Wow! - what a great product. This 58 inch plasma TV is a a great value and provides a lot of bang for the buck. It is nearly identical to the PN58C550. It is short 1 HDMI input and maybe a color adjustment feature. The technical information on the web for this product is limited and often inaccurate. It does have an ethernet input, 3 HDMI (1 on the side), 2 Component inputs, 1 RCA input (on the side), 2 USB (1 - on the side), 1 Coaxial, and 1 PC input. It has PIP which is a nice feature, but works for the coaxial input only. Like any plasma there is some glare, but not annoying - Note I have it in a room with a bunch of windows. With regard to the product radiating heat or making a buzzing sound, well I have not experienced any problems yet and dont expect to. Other reviews for this product have suggested the volume is weak and frankly I have no idea what they are talking about. The TV is in a room that is about 20 x 20 with 20ft ceilings and I can hear it perfectly on volume setting 10 out of 100! There is a setting to adjust volume out of standard mode to either 'movie', 'clear voice', 'music', or 'amplify'. I have it on 'clear voice' and it is perfect. I also adjusted the viewing mode to 'dynamic' which makes the TV look a little brighter. Overall, I am satisified with my purchase and will be sure to update the review should I experience any issues with the TV.

Incredible TV for the price. Essentially Identical to the PN58C550G1F. Reviews for that unit are applicable to this model as well. Great contrast and picture, sound is decent but not mind blowing. Some people mentioned the 'buzzing' sound from the speakers. I can hear it on mine, but it's faint. I imagine most people who purchase a TV like this will have a surround sound setup.

The reviewer below who said it "does not support 16:9 aspect ratio" has absolutely, positively no idea what they're talking about. This is a 16x9 TV.

Oddly enough, one of my favorite features is that there are no LED status lights when the unit is on. I can't tell you how distracting this is to me on other TVs. A small red LED is on when the unit is off, but powered.

Bought this TV to upgrade a 46" Sharp Aquos LCD in my living room and after some issues with the first delivery of a TV with cracked glass over most of the TV the replacement came a week later and works great. Let me say first the Aquos has a fantastic picture (bright colors, deep black) for HDTV, Blu Ray and games as well but wanted to go bigger. Why not, right!? Decided to go with plasma for several reasons (size for price, overall picture quality tends to be better on new plasmas over LCD or even many LED I have seen, and 600hz refresh rate is great for games). New TV has a very sharp picture, easy to use setup for more advanced owners who like to set up manual movie settings, and although no built in web apps or wi-fi (wasn't a big deal for me as most of the web apps coming with new TV's I use my PS3 or XBox for) it does have 2 USB ports for wi-fi connections if you want. Has Samsung software included to set up streaming content from your PC or to look thru pictures on a jumpdrive or external HDD (again I use my game consoles for most of that but option is there).

I have my TV on the base but does have side inputs to make wall mounting easier. The only issue that I have encountered is probably quite limited for most people but the remote control frequency/IR used by the TV is the same as my Pioneer receiver. I have a Harmony One to control all my equipment but at times when changing inputs on the receiver there is crosstalk and the TV menus come up. I have found some work arounds thru the Harmony remote (the greatest remote EVER made btw) but still have some issues when turning the TV and receiver on due to competing for same signal. Other than that minor issue the TV is great.
