The 852 x 480-pixel progressive resolution showcases 1.07 billion vibrant colors, and its 160-degree viewing angle provides a picture-perfect entertainment experience from just about anywhere in the room. This professional-level plasma display offers a multi-layer anti-reflection filter, built-in video wall processor, picture-by-picture functionality for video conferencing, and multiple burn-in protection features, including auto pixel shift, signal pattern processing, and all white display.

The PPM42M5S has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuneb and it's capable of displaying high definition TV signals (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i) with an optional receiver. It features 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio for optimal letterbox movie and HD television viewing, 1300 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and multi-region color system (PAL, SECAM, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43). Other video enhancements include picture-in-picture (PiP), selectable color temperature, digital noise reduction, variable aspect ratio, digital zoom, and picture freeze.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

It offers connectivity to external speakers, and can drive 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts of total power). It offers the following video and audio connections:
