I needed a basic utility DVDRW, nothing fancy, no software. This was the cheapest by far and it surprised me that it was made by one of the leading consumer electronics companies in the world, Samsung. I went to the manuf site to research it and was convinced this was not a "cheap" drive, they put some serious research into it. I was VERY pleased that the drive did not look like the photo, but rather the front graphics were much more restrained and subdued. One of the reasons I chose the drive is that my case has a button that works best with a round (circular) button on the drive itself, rather than the oblong button many drives have.

The fit and finish are typically Samsung, even for a drive that costs about the same as 4 Big Macs. This is a SATA drive, which my new motherboard and case required, and installation was brainless. It is very quiet in operation and the drawer/disc holder is a bit above the quality from some of the other well-known brand names.

If you are looking for a cheap but well-made DVDRW drive, this is probably the one. Why pay more?

When it comes to optical drives, OEM is the way to go. You don't need the software disc; these things are plug-and-play. The only thing you do need is a SATA cable and some screws, and this drive comes with those. Everything you need is in the package.

We're looking at a Samsung drive here. That's a good brand. I mean, if you don't already know, Samsung is pretty excellent. They make some of the most popular and highest quality hardware. You've probably seen the multitude of Samsung phones that flood the market, but you might not know that Samsung makes a lot of the hardware inside of Apple's iPhone and iPad products. So, you can guess it's a safe bet that if Apple trusts Samsung, you can to.

About the specs:
The only thing this thing lacks is Lightscribe or Labelflash technology. There aren't many people who use those things, though, so unless you are one of them (and you will know if you are), you don't need to worry about that. The things you do need to think about in a DVD burner are speed and media compatibility. On those fronts, this is a good choice. 22X is a respectable speed, and this drive will burn to any media you throw in it (well, except for blu-rays, naturally). The one thing you want to watch out for is dual-layer compatibility. I think most drives burn DL these days, but you have to check. This one does.

A lot of people discount this functionality, because they think of DL discs as being expensive, but that's a dated mentality. DVD-DL media is very reasonable these days. Look for some from AmazonBasics if you're interested. You'll see that they're cheaper than you think. And DL DVDs are a great way to add viability to the medium, as files are getting larger and larger.

Working for awhile now I would purchase this unit again in a minute. Shipped fast and unit came packaged well. Note though you might have a glitch with older computers with outdated interfaces as I did in my first installation when unit was switched out to newer computer with current motherboard SATA controller problems ceased.

Mind you this is a OEM bare bones drive with no software,

I would recommend this item if you need a DVDRW drive.

The image is almost representative of the actual product. The " Samsung " on the tray is the only thing that is missing.
I agree that it actually looks better.
Drive is well built with a solid feel to the button and a well built disc tray.
Here is what I have found running this drive on a intel i7 quad processor, windows 7 ultimate 64 bit with 4gb of Ram.
Ripping music CDs actual speed 7.8x- 11x
Burning music CDs actual speed 5x-10.4x
Burning data rates are also of decent to fast speed
More importantly I have not experienced any read or write errors to date.
Also, the drive runs virtually silent which is a big plus if you are using the drive to watch DVDs. No, jet engine whinning like on some other budget drives.
I'm not a gamer so I have no comments there.

For the price, it may not hit the 22x on read or write, but for 19 dollars plus running silent, great drive.

This Samsung Drive is a good price for what I needed. I needed something cheap but reliable for a small server PC I built from spare parts. I chose this CD/DVD Drive because 1) It's Cheap! 2) It's Samsung! I have had really good, long lasting products from Samsung in the past, so I'll be giving them my loyalty and continue buying from them.

Installed is a home built computer, came with no drivers. When I booted the computer the first time the drive was recognized, I loaded the operating system from the drive, drivers were then downloaded. It has given me no problems. I would buy it again if ever needed.

I've had this drive for a little over 2 years. It has followed me throughout several PC builds. It's seen quite some use burning hundreds of DVD's and Dual-Layer DVD's. Still holding up fine and operates smoothly and quietly. Mine is the same part number (SH-222) but these are apparently built in joint with Toshiba, as it's branded Toshiba-Samsung. Either way, its a great drive from great companies.
