3D Technology Checklist

This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have:

A Display

The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect.

A Source

While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3.

Content

In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience.

3D Glasses

All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV.

HDMI Cable

To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality.
If you want to get more information about 3D, shop our 3D products, watch videos, or interact with other customers, visit 3D 101, our customer center about everything 3D.

3D Samsung Starter Kit Samsung’s new 3D Active Glasses are the gateway to Samsung 3D entertainment. Impressive both in how they function and in what they allow you to experience, the technology works as follows: When you put them on and look at the screen, the technology first blocks the left and then the right lens. It happens faster than the blink of an eye – so your eye won’t notice it. But when images are shown to each eye separately this “staggered” effect achieves far more lifelike 3D images.

We purchased the Samsung PN63C8000 TV & received 2 of these glasses with the kit & purchased 2 more @ $149.00 each + tax. When we got home & watched the first 3D movie, excitement filled the room. Within an hour I realized there was a serious problem. Everyone kept having different problems @ different times. IE: loosing sync with the TV, Colors fading in & out, Color shifts from red / blue & green... We returned the glasses & got a new kit(2pair) & swapped the purchased pairs out. Same problem with 3/4 pair. I'll get to the point here to save a (little) time. After multiple calls & Trips to the seller, I googled the problem & found similar experiences & some tips to resolve them.( Which I've included below) Some problems persisted so I contacted Samsung, which had the BEST attitude & ease of contacting tech support I've ever experienced with a major manufacturer. Through experience, other user tips & Samsung recommendations we now have the best 3D set up I've seen. Try the following. I personally recommend in the order listed: Or Just skip to the Summary at the bottom for the conclusion:::

#1. First, Your Samsung 3D TV has an IR (infrared) emitter. On the PNxxC8000 series you will see a small rectangle red lens located on the front lower right & lower left of your set. The one on the right is for your remote control. The left is the emitter. Make certain when using the glasses your line of sight to THIS emitter is not blocked. Also, gently clean the surface of the emitter if any dust or sticky residue( as was in my case) is noticed over it. Then , while playing a 3D movie, walk up to emitter with glasses off(remember, lower left side on this set),cup your hands around it blocking the light from the TV,place your eye close to it, & you should see what appears to be a small continuous glowing dim red light within the unit. OR, if you have a cell phone with a camera, place it near the emitter in camera mode & you should see a "whitish" light glowing from the emitter on your cell/camera screen. Either way, if the light blinks on & off the emitter is faulty & glasses will loose sync intermittently. If it is not glowing at all, the glasses will not work at all. Call Samsung customer support if you find a problem here, & arrange for it to be changed out.

#2. Replace the batteries that came with the glasses with new CR2025 Lithium batteries(Duracell was recommended by Samsung) I could not find any locally but got a great deal on them @ Amazon.com. Temporarily I used Energizer CR2025's I found @ WalMart & that greatly improved things but this alone will not solve the problem.

#3. This is the part that is frustrating as it appears to involve a flaw in design.Located on the front of your glasses, on the nose/bridge there is a small rectangle shaped plastic lens. This is the IR receiver for the glasses. Unfortunately, the plastic while semi-transparent is also reflective.Scene changes, bright scenes, or reflections on the screen, brighter ambient light or lighting in the room can confuse the sensor & cause the glasses to loose sync with the emitter. SOLUTION: I've tried several methods to resolve this but finally found one that worked GREAT. Cut a small piece of electrical tape so that it can be placed over the IR receiver on the glasses. It needs to cover all but approximately 1mm at the top & bottom of the small IR receiver. It will take a couple of tries to get the fit just right. For me, I cut the piece longer than the receiver is to have something to hold on to while centering it in place. It's OK to cover the Left & Right edges completely. Just make certain you have the 1mm space exposing the sensor at the top & bottom. ( FYI: 1mm is about the width of the wire used in a spiral notebook, so, not much). The glasses will sync continuously using this method until you turn completely away from the TV but they quickly regain sync after facing the set again.

#4. Please note that I have had great success using what I've described here but out of 8 pairs of glasses, I had 2 pairs that began to have dramatic color changes after continuous use of 1-2 hours. This was simply a case of a defective processor in the glasses themselves & I returned them as well.

***SUMMARY*** This is a relatively new technology & while other brands may not have the sync issues described here, I have tried 2 other brands in my home & spent countless hours viewing, researching etc. before deciding on Samsung. The 3D effects produced by these glasses when matched with the set I mentioned above are unsurpassed in my opinion. I also own other less expensive glasses that perform satisfactorily, but there is definitely a greater perceived depth of field & a richness of color that these glasses produce that I have found no where else.
I've tried to present you with a good review of the glasses as well as solutions to the problems you may face with them. If I could do it all over again...AND I can as I'm still within the seller's return policy, I'd choose the exact same set up...HANDS DOWN : ), Thanks, David

enough with the gripers August 10, 2010
technology innovations are going to cost more at the leading edge ... i have seven children at home, several grand children and grand parents who have all come over and watched the 3d movie (only one so far) ... we even watch some regular blue-ray movies in the simulated 3d mode, which is not as great, but it does add depth ... and no one has damaged the glasses, from age 2 (with parental supervision) to age 78 ... with lots of young hands turning the glasses on and off ... we have four of them, kid tested for over four months and all working and intact ... yes, they are not indestructable, they could be easily broken with carelessness, but you would think if something cost a hundred dollars, you would take care of them and not leave them to be sat on ... and for those who care, not one of us have had headaches or anything else after several hours at a time and over fifty hours over the four months ... and 3d is great ... the whole picture just has so much more realism (if one can have that in an animation film) ... just the individual hairs on the moth ... the many times you just put your hand out there cause you believe you can almost touch the picture ... just fabulous ... maybe not for everyone, but out of the sixty or so people who have watched at our house, not one of them was not impressed and everyone wants to know when we are getting our next 3d movie (more than likey meatballs this month) ... there has always been those who put technology down or believe everything should be indestructable and a cheap price ... well, the car, television, computer and many other advances have overcome those that are negative, (of course some advances have failed miserably) ... but my advice is to judge for yourself, i know a couple of box and department stores that have the tv and glasses for demonstrations ... take the time and see for yourself ...

These glasses are also compatible with the mitsubishi 3d kit. The glasses use CR2025 batteries that are easy to change. If the glasses die on you during a movie you can quickly change the battery and be back watching in seconds VS waiting for you to charge up the rechargable ones.
