This paper tray was bought along with the Samsung ML-2851 ND laser printer with the intention to use it like the printer that was being replaced. I prefer to feed envelopes from one tray with letter head from another; a mail merge printing operation, if you will.

I had read previous reviews and the User's Guide before ordering this tray, but didn't find any reference to restricted paper feed paths for printing envelopes... except there is a restriction. The driver for the printer will not allow the printing of envelopes through any paper path other than the manual feed slot. The manual feed slot will only allow one envelope at a time to be fed into the printer, so the purpose of having the second paper tray is wasted for my intended use of the second paper tray. What surprised me most is the range of paper size adjustments that can be made in the paper trays, which seem to indicate that other paper sizes are supported, but working with the driver settings show that only A4, Letter and Legal sized paper can be used in the paper trays.

I am keeping the lower tray, however. It offers expanded paper capacity, which is great for me because I find that I need to print large documents from time to time for school. Since the driver for the printer auto detects when one tray is empty and automatically switches to the other, it saves time. Also, the printer driver allows for a different first page of a document be taken from one tray, with the remaining document pages taken from the other. Small offices with special letterhead will appreciate that feature.

If you don't need the two uses the second paper tray offers, save your money. My rating is based on the usefulness of the tray to me based on its cost. It is a very expensive addition if you don't really need a combined 500 sheet paper capacity for the printer, or the ability to load letterhead in one tray and regular paper in the other.

i purchased this "optional tray" and have trying to find out how to select it, as when i would have Letter size in tray 1 and Legal size in tray 2. no one in customer support seems to know about it or they tell me that what i bought was just a $130.00 storage area to keep extra paper. when the top tray empties then it would draw from the bottom tray. this is not what i spent $130.00 for!!!
