The best monitor I tried,
By
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
Crisp, clean, bright picture. Brilliant colors. Much better viewing area than the cheaper competition. Hands down the best monitor I tried. I have tried:
Gateway FHD2400 24" widescreen Samsung 2496HM 24" widescreen Samsung 245BW 24" widescreen and this one. The 245T has a pixel viewing angle of 178 degrees compared to the others which are 160 degrees. That means that I can see all the screen including the edges of the screen clearly. 24 inches is big. With a lesser viewing angle, the only clear viewability is directly forward at eye level. With 160 degrees, I look to the lower left edge of the screen and images are blurry and less color. 178 degrees allows it to be as clear and crisp no matter where my eye/head position is. With the 160 degrees, when I walked over to the monitor (standing) I could not see the elements of the taskbar (e.g. look for a "new mail" icon). I had to bend down and look at eye level to make out what was on the screen. With 178 degrees, I can see it while standing up. Huge difference. The colors on this are the best too. The picture is clean, whiter, hotter, more adjustable. All the others had overly-red saturation no matter what settings I tried. The 245T has actual buttons rather than the dumbly-designed touch/heat sensitive panel on some others. I ordered this on Amazon, and it arrived next day and works beautifully. It's more expensive than the other monitors, but I use a monitor all day. Chintzing on a monitor would be a bad idea, like trying to save money by buying a cheaper mattress, or a cheap desk chair. Not a good idea to buy bad quality for something that is an integral part of my life. If my needs were less vigorous, like paying bills online or other tasks that only involved brief episodes with a computer, I might be satisfied with one of the other cheap models. But in my opinion, there is absolutely no comparison between the 245T and anything else I saw in my extensive searching for a 24" widescreen monitor. The 245T is worth it.

If you are a graphic designer, photographer or just someone who wants a high quality monitor that can produce consistent color, and has a wide viewing angles, this is for you. This has a S-PVA panel, which is far superior to cheaper TN LCD panels used in less costly monitors. If you spend a great deal of time in front of a monitor for work, especially with color critical applications, it is well worth the additional cost. Out of the box this needs calibration, and the reds were "hot" which can be dealt with by reducing the red saturation controls. I have not noticed any buzzing sound as other have noted, even with my ear to the monitor. Overall, an excellent monitor and a good option versus the even more expensive Apple Cinema Displays.

Spectacular,
I bought this sight unseen after reading some reviews, as local dealers had only the 245B. After a few days, during which I haven't yet done much with the menu system, I have to give it five stars simply based on the visual display, which is incredible right out of the box. I am moving up from a 19" standard LCD monitor (HP) and wondered if I should go higher than 24". If you're making a similar move, I'd advise you to be careful. I see now that anything larger than 24" would be too much for my purposes. Probably 22" would have been sufficient. (I'm not a gamer.) In fact, I'm leaving an inch of desktop at each side of the screen for direct access to my icons.

This is now my third Samsung monitor after recently upgrading from a Samsung 24" 243T. The picture quality and overall look of the new 245T monitor are quite simply AWESOME!
The benefits of this monitor are impressive: switchable HDMI and DVI input, PIP , and a full featured display control panel. Looking for a spectacular picture? Try hooking this display up via HDMI to a blu-ray player! This monitor produces a knockout razor sharp picture with 3-dimensional pop. I also use this for Photoshop and love working with the sharp 1920x1200 resolution. My new monitor arrived from Amazon in a well packed double box. The monitor was perfect, no dead pixels and functioned flawlessly right out of the box. I downloaded and installed the latest driver from the Samsung site, and was good to go. Had the monitor up and running in 10 minutes. Highly recommend this monitor for anybody who is looking a high performance, reasonably priced monitor.

Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor: The Best One!,

I have a PhD in Vision Research, specializing in color science. (Yes, really!) By my eye, the Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor is the clearest, brightest and most colorful Monitor on the Market. See colors that could previously only be seen on "Studio CRT's" costing thousands of $.
Surprisingly, there are many Websites that have "colors" that you cannot normally see accurately with essentially any other Monitor; especially, at the high brightness levels of the 245T. Expensive...But, stunning. Like no other I have seen. If you get one, go to Wired.com (bright greens) or even Newsweek.com (multiple-reds)or Amazon.com (brilliant orange buttons). No, I have no connection with Samsung, other than also owning the predecessor - 244T that is just as good; but, not as colorful. RB

See Maximum PC, which rates this monitor over the Dell 2408. I read all the reviews, both professional magazines, web, personal, etc. All complained that the default settings, as delivered, were excessive, and the monitor was only useful after calibrating it. Obviously Samsung read the same reviews, and they now deliver with moderate settings. I checked my delivered monitor against their suggested, altered settings, and they are very close. I tweaked a few things for personal preference but that's it.
I needed a monitor for Photoshop CS3 (not gaming, not hdtv) and so I needed a true 8-bit color monitor, not one of the cheaper 6-bit TN panels. For a 24", with these specs, in this price range, your best bets are the 245T or the Dell 2408. You'll find reviewers that rate one higher than the other depending on who you read. I subscribe to Maximum PC and decided to go with their recommendation, which is the 245T. Plus they cost about the same, depending on what promotions Dell is running when it's time to buy. I have this next to my Samsung 215tw, also an 8-bit monitor, 22", but 3 years older, and the 245T shows more detail in the shadows. It's beautiful and exactly what I expected. I highly recommend it if you work with PhotoShop at home. I also bought an Ergotron LX computer arm for it (on Amazon $114) which is mounted to my desk and I can easily swing it wherever I need it, or spin it into portrait mode. Same with the 215tw.

I bought this monitor to replace an old Apple LCD monitor which had become faded and low in contrast. I use it as a second monitor to hold software "tool palettes" and to view video rough & final cuts. I calibrate all my monitors and profile them by making an ICC for every monitor in my studio.
Installation: I connected this to one of our Mac workstations using the DVi connection and it booted up without any problem. There was no hum or noise. It gets very warm on the top, where the vents are. The USB ports work perfectly, at USB 2.0 speeds. When the computer sleeps, the monitor also sleeps. The viewing angle is far better than the monitor it replaced, but for best viewing I recommend sitting "on axis". Profiling: This monitor allows each RGB channel to be adjusted, which is very unusual for a fluorescent lamp backlit monitor, and this allows for very accurate profiling. The monitor also allows very good control of brightness & contrast so that once the ICC profile is used there is no banding or artifacts in any images (typically seen when an ICC profile "forces" a monitor's output to conform). Video: This monitor can display over 90% of the colors & contrast of the NTSC standard. Once this monitor is balanced for video and set with the proper output gamma, videos can be previewed with assurance of accuracy. When using the HDMI as the source feed (e.g., from a Blu-Ray player), HD video can be evaluated with great accuracy. And for those frequent office breaks, your favorite Blu-Ray movie can be thoroughly enjoyed if you have speakers connected. Four Stars: I gave this monitor four stars because there are monitors that are far better than this one, but cost 4x the price (e.g., the Samsung SyncMaster XL24 24-inch LCD Monitor). To give this monitor 5 stars would mean (to me) that it's as good as the high end monitors, and it's not. Bottom Line: If you're looking for a monitor to provide you with excellent color/contrast without the expense of a "pro" monitor (at $2000+), and you want HDMI for video playback, this monitor will deliver.

Beautiful Monitor - Marred by poor support and backlight failure,
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
The 245T is a beautiful wide gamut 24" monitor with a nice selection of inputs and a very nice adjustable base. It profiles very well using my Eye-One Proof hardware. There is an bit of a medium pitched buzz coming from the monitors electronics, an annoyance, but not a deal breaker.
However, Samsungs support for what is ostensibly a professional product is down right abysmal. After 1.5yrs my monitor began to suffer from partial backlight failure. After sending the 245T in for service I was informed it would be a while before they had the appropriate repair part. The monitor was out of my hands for 3 weeks before it was returned to me in a too large brown box (the service center apparently having destroyed the original packaging) and in no better shape then when I sent it in. In addition to the monitor still experiencing the same problem as I sent it in for, it came back to me with a scratch on the screen. I've tried to resolve the situation with Samsung multiple times and each time am either re-directed to another department and told to 'send it in for repair' or simply ignored. This is my last Samsung display.

I bought this Samsung 245T to replace my 243T display that failed due to a gravity error wich in turn created a sudden impact with the floor. Had that not happened, I would not have experienced the wonderfully bright, vivid colors and sharpness this newer LCD display has. I was still happy with the older 243T model, but spending the money unexpectedly was not a disappointment at all. It's 20 lbs lighter, the stand is sturdier because of the weight reduction, I now have USB ports on the monitor, and the menu system is easier to navigate through. I do a lot of digital photography, and if you've never experienced a widescreen monitor of this caliber, you don't know what you're missing. It's worth every penny, and if Samsung stays with this model line, I will, too.

I have been using it for a month and I am very happy with this monitor:
- no dead or stuck pixels, - good, even backlight, - sharp text, great colors, and a wide angle of viewing (S-PVA !) - Far Cry looks and plays great in full resolution, - no buzzing sound that some others reported, - 1920 x 1200 is a lot of screen space comparing to my old 17" LCD (Samsung 173P), - USB hub is built-in, I have two computers connected (DVI and analog). I will probably add a third one over HDMI. There is a front button to switch signal sources - very convenient. I have a separate USB switch to move mouse and keyboard. Per instructions, use MPA for movies only. I can see a screen flicker when MPA is on for normal desktop viewing. A few nitpicks: - the top is getting quite warm, - the bezel is glossy, looks cheap, and reflects text at the edges, - the bottom edge cannot be pushed all the way down (there is a 3" gap), - the screen is very bright - I have the brightness down to 5 (out of 100) Overall, this monitor is worth the higher price. |
