1.0 out of 5 stars Simply horrible!! STAY AWAY OF CHEAP MONITORS LIKE THIS!!!!
When I was looking for a 24 inch monitor to work with my laptop and expand my desktop working area, I decided to purchase a Samsung 2493HM. I was basically attracted by the low prices and Samsung's stellar reputation on LCDs (I own two Samsung LCD TVs and I was extremely satisfied with both). What I did not know was the nightmare that it would come after this purchase...

This display is excellent! Not only can I hook up my Macbook Pro, but I can also have my 360 plugged in at the same time for 1080p gaming glory! Color and contrast are great in my opinion, and I love the fact that I can adjust it however I need to, so when I slouch I can still see the screen. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the touch controls that everyone else mentions. They are impossible to see without direct light, however, once you get the settings right, it's easy to memorize where the power and volume buttons are. Great display at a great price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing., July 14, 2008

There is a TON you could write about this monitor...but for the sake of endless paragraphs I will sum it up like this: this monitor is absolutely dollar for dollar the best monitor on the market right now (remember...technology changes quickly), and it's built for the future with HDMI & D-Sub. The picture simply can't be put into words - it's absolutely beautiful. Bright (but doesn't burn your cornea's), clear & rich. Motion, even during the fastest scenes of a movie or game (again remember....some of this has to do with your own pc & it's video card and processor) is FLAWLESS.

Net net is that you get a monitor that delivers the performance, looks & reliability of a super high end monitor for a mid range price. Stand is flexible in multiple ways, including the ability to be raised and lowered (do NOT underestimate that, most monitors don't allow for that). If you're in the market for a top end monitor from the leader in LCD's (Viewsonic / Nokia etc would be in the CRT realm), get this monitor.

Peace out, happy 420

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor for its price and overall, March 18, 2008

I bought this item from BB on sale for $450 (also managed to get them to give me 10% off with a coupon that didn't specify monitors). I love amazon and bought my Samsung TV from them (no one could touch their price) but with monitors and hearing about so many dead pixel issues, I like buying from the store (have had 2 LCDs and never had a dead pixel though). This monitor blows away my old Sony 19 inch LCD, which only had a 500-1 contrast but the same brightness (and it cost $550 when I bought it). If you are looking to upgrade from a 19 inch non 16-10 ration screen, a 22 inch just isn't that big of an upgrade, go with a 24 inch, you will not regret it. This monitor is super bright which is great for games, but a little too bright for regular activities (just needs to be tuned down). No ghosting in any of the games I have played and no blurred text issues, great out of the box. Software doesn't really work with Vista 64 though (monitor still works fine). any adjustment you can think of and all connectivity ports, I almost bought the Dell 248 on sell from their website for $380, but for $45 more I was able to get this one that has HDMI and a better stand (plus I hate Dell). I am amazed with this monitor, but I am also not an expert, all I care about is that it makes everything look better than my old one and works great with the new computer I just built. Just remember if you use it for gaming you need graphics cards that can handle the 1900X1200 resolution, I have 2 8800GT overclocked cards SLI in my system with a Q6600 overclocked at 3.2 GHz and Crysis only is giving me 20-28 fps with high detail on 1900X1200, any other game is easily over 100 fps though (not a monitor issue, just computer limitations). Also if you are going from a 19 inch non wide screen (my sony was 14X12, so semi widescreen) it takes time getting used to the huge screen for normal applications, eyes are wondering all around the screen and some web pages only use half the screen for some reason). Great 3 year manu. warranty with Samsung, but I don't like touch panel controls, my old samsung TV had them and the panel malfunctioned, would have cost $150 to fix if outside of the warranty, and even in warranty you have to pay to ship it).

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly good... except..., August 17, 2009
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
The Bad:

1. The soft-touch menu "buttons" are a pain. They activate when you lightly brush up against them (e.g. while reaching to adjust a speaker next to the screen). Also the labeling of the buttons is unreadable unless the lighting in the room is just right (dark gray ink on black plastic)... for a product that is measured by "contrast ratios", how did they ever get this wrong?!

2. Although the horizontal viewing angle is wide, the vertical is very tight. Since the screen is relatively big when you sit two feet from it, you can actually notice the difference in color/brightness in different regions when you move your head up or down a few inches. It is most noticeable when viewing pictures; not so much when dealing with text.

3. They take several seconds to wake up from sleep mode (Mac only?). Maybe 4 or 5 seconds. Not terribly annoying, unless you're in a hurry.

The Good: (Not including the obvious things everyone likes)

1. I really like the ability to swivel the screen 90-degrees, to make it tall rather than wide. On my Mac, this is handled seamlessly. Since I have two of these monitors, I have one set up vertically, which is great for editing text docs, or for positioning long toolbars/inspectors when working on the horizontal screen. Also great when viewing a portrait picture, vs. a landscape. You can view the picture without any lost real estate.

Overall: I think I got a good deal for my purposes (computer programming and some graphics/web design)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good buy for a good money, June 17, 2008
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
I have bought this monitor from another seller (amazon cannot send electronics to my country), but I have decided to review this monitor to make others a little bt more information about this device.

In the shop I have tested this monitor and compared it to another 22-24" monitors. And I have seen (for my view) that th coors are... hmm... more acceptable than in other tested monitors, and average lag (the post-effect after quick move objects on the screen) is the least on that monitor.

Of course, the Samsung 245T monitor's colors and angles are much better - because 245T has S-IPS matrix, and this monitor - TN+film. But (!) it is MUCH quicker matrix than S-IPS one, so this monitor is better for games and movies. Hat is for the angles - I do not pay uch attention to it - the current ones are comfortable for me.

I think, for this price it is the best monitor, maybe except for Dell 2408, but that one monitor costs about 100$ more... And much more rare in my country :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Monitor of it's Class, January 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
I received this item today from Amazon. At first, I thought they'd accidentally shipped a refrigerator instead of a computer monitor because the box was so big. I seriously wondered if there might be stowaways inside as it was considerably heavier than I'd anticipated.

I purchased the item to use as my main monitor. This replaced a 22" WS Acer which was lacking in every conceivable way.

Upon first impression, the product is magnificent. The bezel is a shiny lacquered black color which looks very nice. The product came w/ both a VGA and DVI cable, along with the speaker cables (which I did not install).

The stand is outstanding. It adjusts up, down, left and right about as well as you can hope for. I seriously considered the 24" HP model after checking it out in a store; I believe the stand is as good or better than the HP. The 90* swivel to portrait mode is well designed - and it makes accessing the input jacks easy as well.

After turning it on, the "out-of-the-box" settings are badly lacking. I had to play with the brightness/contrast/etc. to get it close to where it needs to be.

As other have noted, the On-Screen Display (as well as the volume and on/off controls) buttons aren't really buttons at all; they're touch sensitive in the way that an i-phone is. They work when you hit them right. Although it looks slick, they perform poorly in function. You can see the markings fine when the monitor is turned off, but with the monitor on, the brightness of the screen makes the gray on black text very difficult to see. A flashlight is necessary to see them, even in a well lit room. This is frustrating when attempting to adjust monitor settings using these controls. I'd say that this is the only place where the 24" HP has an edge. The HP was very well engineered in this aspect.

I didn't think there'd be a large difference between a 22" (1680 * 1050) & this one. I was wrong.

This monitor is a monstrosity!!! If you desire maximum screen space, a 22" simply won't do. I knew this would be an upgrade over the Acer, but I had no idea what I was getting into. I run a 17" CRT as a secondary monitor that I used often w/ the 22" when I needed a little extra space. I don't foresee it getting a lot of use now that this behemoth is dominating my desktop.

The viewing angles are very acceptable. One of the reasons I decided against the HP was the fact that when viewing the screen in portrait mode (in the store), I found there to be a very big difference top to bottom in terms of picture quality. This Samsung is far superior in this aspect. This monitor can swivel approx 40* or more before the picture becomes noticeably distorted.

After tweaking the settings, I find the picture to be excellent. I purchased this item as I felt it was the best 24" in it's class based on other reviews. So far I am happy with my choice. The monitor has no dead or stuck pixels and is versatile enough that I think most everyone will find it useful and worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor - be careful about USB "option", December 27, 2008

I got this for a new gaming computer based on many positive reviews. After having this for a few days, here are a few comments:

Pros: beautiful display of Crysis, WoW, many other games. Great color. Bright (too bright, but I toned that done). Fast screen response

Cons: Not many. I won't need the "pivot" ability, unless we get into serious desktop publishing. I expected the monitor to come with USB ports -- that is an "option" that is hard to tell if you're going to get with any particular model. Tiny bit of light bleed at the lower left side, but hardly noticeable.

Summary: I'm happy. I wanted one of the best TN monitors on the market and feel I got it. I also feel its likely a bit of overkill for a computer that will largely be used for gaming -- I also bought a 22" AOC monitor that is perfectly acceptable for only $179 on sale -- but since I was splurging on a nice system I'm very happy.

I think this would be awesome for a work computer where desktop publishing was occasionally required (where the pivot ability would come into play). For home / gaming, its overkill, but very nice overkill. Just be careful to check if your model comes with USB ports or be ready to get a hub....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
I've been looking for a 24 inch monitor and decided that of all the monitors reviewed out there the 2493HM seemed to fit my price range and feature set the best. I bought it from Amazon and have had it for a week. My reactions so far is:
* Looks great
* No dead pixels
* Vivid colors
* Sharp and crisp screen
* Fast to start
* I've seen way worse when it come to the viewing angle. I cannot see it would turn anybody off.

It was kind of funny, but I did not know how to turn it off for the first 3 days (not a priority). I never noticed there are in fact menu text including power on/off on the lower right hand side of the bezel. I actually love the no button touch system. I have a Philips SA9200 mp3 player with the same touch system, except it has a blue light for all the options. This monitor does not have anything indicating where each menu item is located. If you are going to change the settings in a dark room, use a flash-light :) You will have a problem turning the menu off if you accidentally hit the wrong button and it pops up.
In any case, I am very satisfied so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars The monitor is GLORIOUS!, June 26, 2008
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
I built a new gaming rig and got this monitor to replace an old 17" NEC LCD. My dad purchased the 22" Samsung and has been really happy with it, based on the reviews I decided to give this a shot.

Ordered from Amazon and it came a week later via the SuperSaver shipping. Box is pretty big. Upon opening at home the monitor is massive, much larger that my old monitor. Set up was easy and it works well with my computer and video card. I decided not to go with Vista, running XP and I have a pretty beefy video card (Radeon HD 3850).

Again this monitor is massive and very bright as other reviews have mentioned. My video card has dual output so I've got my old monitor next to the Samsung and it looks dim by comparison, but it's at least 5 years old. For me initially the size and brightness were overwhelming, but over the course of a couple weeks I've become accustomed to both. The picture is outstanding and I've had no issues with video or gaming on it. I can run Call of Duty 4 at 1900x1200 and it looks gorgeous. Unfortunately the frame rate is a little lower than I'd like so had to back down, but that's my video card and cpu, not the monitor. Can play Command and Conquer 3 at the highest settings and it looks amazing too.

A slight concern was speaker pop when turning on and off, but I'm not using the speakers on the monitor and it's no longer an issue since I've turned them off altogether.

I would highly recommend this monitor, it's my favorite part of my new rig.

4.0 out of 5 stars NICE MONITOR, May 5, 2009

This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM 24" LCD Full-HD 1080p Computer Monitor DVI VGA HDMI Built-In Speakers Blu-Ray Compatible (Electronics)
I took a lot of time to research a good all purpose monitor and found this was a good bang for the buck..nice pix, no dead pixels and very versatile in horizontal and vertical positions... ive read a lot of people complain about the touch controls.. get over it already, this has not been a problem whatsoever. if youre looking for them in pitch black then yes , its an issue.....yes its tn, probably not as good as an apple but not as expensive either, still a nice picture and good for all overall use.. horizontal viewing angle ok. about the same as all monitors in its class..price- well i dont think its worth over 410 or 420, its been out for a while and if you pick it up for 400 or less youre getting a deal..i would buy another and probably will if they go below 400...hope this is helpfull
