3.0 out of 5 stars I'm no expert, but......
I can live with this monitor, but the word lettering doesn't look as sharp as it does on the same-size Dell LCD monitor that I use at work. I think that I have tried all of the adjustments available to make it as good as it gets, but maybe not. The unadjustable base is a bit annoying.

I have been using the monitor for about 3 weeks and I am extremely happy with it. There were no dead pixels and the monitor functioned perfectly as plug-and-play in windows xp sp2 even before I loaded the samsung driver. The picture is bright an clear. The supplied software is easy to use to obtain true color and auto adjustment. However if you would like a darker or brighter picture the manual adjustment feature is very easy to use. I play a lot of games and I have had no problem with pixel gosting at any resolution. As of now I would recommend this monitor without reservations.

My husband originally bought this monitor after I screwed up and bought a non-traditional aspect ratio monitor -- not knowing much about LCD monitors at that time. The widescreen monitor was extremely difficult to drive -- especially if you are running older hardware and less than the latest and greatest version of XP.

After my misadventure, he did his research and picked this monitor for its brightness, refresh rate, and contrast ratio. He has bad eyes and found this monitor to be great for him. He has owned it for a little over a year and it has worked flawlessly -- no dead pixels.

When I started my job this week and was given a CRT from the mid-90s, I stole this monitor from him so that I could actually read what was on my screen. This monitor is a joy to use. I have an ancient desktop and it works fine in native mode so no extra drivers were required.

I highly recommend this monitor if you aren't familiar with optimizing aspect ratios, trying to match video card specs etc.

This monitor was easy to set up and works well. It is bright and easy to read and has software which allows you to fine tune it for photographic work. I find the 4:3 aspect to be more versatile than widescreen, for example when you want to work on a portrait in photoshop. The maximum resolution is 1280x1024 so if you need more you should get a different monitor but this resolution works well for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Samsung 943N 19" LCD Monitor, April 15, 2009

This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 943N 19-inch LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I bought this monitor to replace my ancient CRT 19" monitor. I researched and reviewed for 3 weeks and this one won out. The specs are right up there with the best of them. 1000:1, and 5ms. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I really wanted a bigger widescreen monitor, but my 7 year old computer with 7 year old hardware won't support the resolutions of a widescreen. I'd have to replace the display card, power supply, and probably stick in another cooling fan....... what's easier? Buy a monitor that works with what ya got! And this one works quite nicely. When I do get a new computer, I can use this one as a second monitor.

There's no back light shining through. Text is smooth/fine in the native resolution of 1280x1024/60Hz. Just enlarge the text through display settings and fool around with "Clear Type". I found one little tiny dead pixel in the right hand top corner.. unnoticeable, unless you are looking for them.. with a magnifying glass.

There's plenty of settings to mess around with. But the physical Auto button on the frame of the screen works great (if you can see it). I tried out the custom settings with the "Natural Color Pro" program that comes on the CD, but I should have gotten familiar with how the setting buttons worked before doing so. I screwed up the custom .icm color profile. (I just entered the sRGB color profile instead). I'm sure there's a way to revert back to default, or do it over, once I get used to the button pushing senario. Again, "Auto" works great!

I'm going to buy a keychain LED flashlight to see the buttons on the frame, especiallly at night. Samsung could have painted those white to make them show up a tad better. A little bit bigger would help too! The people complaining about the buttons are not joking. I had trouble seeing them, until I opened the blinds on the windows behind me. The screen doesn't have any reflections or glare from those open windows either! Very nice and perfect.

The VGA cord could be about a foot longer. At 5 ft., it barely stretches behind my desk and down to the back of my computer. I'll have to rearrange things later.

I also bought a Vanguard Desk Mount . My old CRT was situated way too high for me, and with the standard stand on this monitor, it's still a little high. With bifocals, my neck gets kinked. I figure the ARM will let me position the screen lower to the desktop and more ergonomically comfortable for me. I can push it out of the way when I want to also. I still take notes the old fashioned way.. pen and paper.

Other than the almost invisible physical buttons and the short cord, the display is awesome! I'm getting another one for my husband.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Value Bright Picture LCD Monitor, July 7, 2008

This is a high quality LCD monitor (mine has no dead pixels) with a bright screen for a reasonable price. And it's one of an ever-shrinking number of 19" flat screens with an aspect ratio of 4:3. So if you spend more time with emails, documents and programs than watching wide-screen movies, this monitor is a good choice. Alas, there is a flaw: the stand doesn't tilt or swivel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Samsung 943n - It's hip to be square, November 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung SyncMaster 943N 19-inch LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I've owned a Samsung 740N for 5 years with no trouble, so I decided to try this 19" 943N. Was it worth going from 17" to 19"? Yes. The 943N looks great, text is sharp, no ghosting on games (Grand Prix Legends, NOLF 1&2) even at less than the native resolution - I run this monitor at 1024 x 768 for Internet use with the monitor about 4 feet away. If you want to see more on a page vertically, without squinting or wearing glasses to read the text, a square monitor is the best way to go. Watching wide-screen videos puts black bars at the top and bottom, but the picture is still bigger than a 21" wide screen monitor would give, and they look fine, not HD, but good enough. And how often do you watch WS videos on your computer when you have a TV?

Out of the box, the monitor is way too bright - turned it down to 20%; didn't bother with the software, just pointed Windows XP Pro to the driver on the disk. The touch sensitive buttons on the front are very responsive, maybe too sensitive for some, but easy to get used to, and you only need to set it up once. The screen does tilt. but it's very tight to move, so people think it's not adjustable, but it is. Cool blue light ;-)

Overall, I recommend this monitor for users who value crisp text, more on the page vertically, rather than watching DVDs. I also use this monitor, with 16.7 million colors, for Photoshop and have found no banding in gradients like some cheaper LCDs. So far, I've had it running everyday, 8 to 12 hours a day, for a month, with no problems. It came with 1 stuck green pixel, only visible on a completely black screen, so not a big deal. Get an extra 3 months warranty from Samsung if you register online at their site within 30 days of purchase. Be sure to include the manufacture date as part of the serial number or the form won't recognize your monitor.

The only thing I wasn't happy about was that Amazon knocked $15 off the price, three days after I bought it, and they charged sales tax. What gives with that Amazon? Still a good buy, but wouldn't have bought it if they didn't offer the option to return it for full refund (unlike NewEgg, who will only offer exchange).

I've had this monitor for about a year and a half now at work. It started off all fine, had no real issue with it apart from the fact when I'm working on photos the contrast and brightness do not seem to match any other monitor profile at all. The colour collaboration software also seems to conflict with Adobe Colour Profiles.

However a few days ago when I turned my computer on it stayed black (I have a second monitor set as the secondary display that started fine). After a bit of fiddling with cords, unplugging things a few times it suddenly came to life and worked fine the rest of the day. The next day was very similar, today however 20 minutes of fiddling about hasn't gotten it to turn on. After doing a bit of a search online it seems to be a very common problem with Samsung LCD displays. I wouldn't recommend buying this if you plan on using it for more than a year (or if you're serious about any design work).
