5.0 out of 5 stars RIP my little friend!, March 9, 2011
By
Andy (Minnah-so-tah) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TMOBILE POSTPAID SAMSUNG T509 (Electronics)
This phone is a somewhat old model, so I normally wouldn't bother writing a review on it, but after reading the other review, I feel compelled to stick up for this little phone. It seems the other reviewer got a bad unit, because my phone EXCEEDED every expectation I ever had for it. Dropped calls are just as often to blame on a network as on a phone, I've rarely had any...

I got it in the summer of '05, when I was in college. It survived the last 2 1/2 years of college with me, including me turning 21 and spending time in the local watering holes, which can be quite rough on handsets.

It's been dropped countless times from various heights (and I'm tall) onto often hard surfaces, such as concrete. It's been submerged no less than 2 times.

Basically, I beat the crap out of this phone, and it still worked like a charm. Sadly, in our last few months together, this little guy has been having some trouble. Despite his valiant efforts, things are starting to go, namely the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than a day, and even a replacement battery couldn't resolve that issue. Despite T-Mobile's numerous offers to upgrade my phone over the years, I declined. I honestly can say that I don't think I'll ever find a replacement for this phone that performs the way it did.

It's UI was intuitive, it's construction was rugged, it's quality unmatched. Last night I powered him down for the last time after browsing through years and years of pictures and the memories that comes with them, noting how bright and vibrant the display still was, not a single dead spot. I laughed as I saw my friend holding his girlfriend's purse, scowled at an ex-girlfriend, cringed at a picture of a snapping turtle, marveled at Mt. Rainier in Washington state, laughed at a puppy, and so on and so on. I pulled the SIM card out and closed the battery panel, and strangely felt a twinge of sadness. Strange, because I'm hardly a sentimental person, yet this phone had been with me for such a long time, and performed so admirably, I feel wrong just being done with it. Even it's primitive camera was still snapping pictures to the very end.

Some of our highlights:

- Finishing college and the general stupidity and shenanigans associated with that activity
- Trip to Vegas
- Two trips, spanning a total of 6 months, in the Alaskan wilderness
- Road trip covering much of the central and western United States
- One splashdown in the toilet at work
- One swim in a fish tank
- Numerous collisions with pavement, causing the back panel to fly off
- Surviving in my pocket during a softball game, including being slid on
- Surviving outside over night in freezing Minnesota winters
- Being sat on countless times
- Numerous breakups and new relationships
- Being hired for various jobs
- Spending time as a puppy chew toy

In short, if, for any reason, you might be looking at this phone... BUY IT. No question, no regrets. I will be mothballing mine, but not trashing it - maybe I am sentimental after all?

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 6+ years ever, January 29, 2012
This review is from: TMOBILE POSTPAID SAMSUNG T509 (Electronics)
Well, Andy, I HAD to write to share how thrilling it was to read your review about my little silver T-509. I am still using mine 6 years later! It is just as you described your little phone -- durable, tough, beautiful to look at, and filled with wonderful wallpapers and classical ringtones which are not available anymore. It had the best big 'window' display before iphones came out. Clear, brilliant color. My original battery still functions as it did when brand new -- holds charge for days, and hours and hours of talk time. Photographs for the last six years document my son growing from a little boy into a teenager; with so many other priceless moments that would have been lost if this faithful little appendage to my hand had not been on duty capturing them with its little camera -- which took large wonderful pictures until T-mobile stopped supporting it, and then the photos shrank in size and quality!

I have been trying to buy another -- failed twice to receive what I paid for --the SILVER one -- (some false advertising going on--sellers sending black ones instead -- not the same!) before this one is completely worn out. Incidentally, if this phone was NOT a super wonderful phone, it would not be selling for SO much!

Thank you for speaking up, and thereby, encouraging me to speak up. I am still looking for another one.....so the original may get a long-deserved rest on a cushion in a glass box (he he he.)

Samsung, please bring this phone back, exactly as you first made it, for those folks who don't want or need "smart" (hah) phones! Please.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible phone, November 14, 2010
This review is from: TMOBILE POSTPAID SAMSUNG T509 (Electronics)
This is the worst phone i've ever used. Right from out of the box it didnt work right. Sometimes the buttons dont work, screen blanks out white and you cant see anything, drops calls all the time, and gets horrible reception. Save your money, dont buy this phone.
