5.0 out of 5 stars Good entry level HDTV ready television.
I purchased this television primarily to enjoy my DVDs and Xbox in progressive scan mode. It has good features at an affordable price point. I'm not yet ready to invest in a high cost plasma or LCD unit as I believe those technologies will come down significantly in price within the next few years. A CRT based system was the reasonable choice for me.

It is a 4x3 CRT television, but the 16x9 widescreen squeeze works quite well and about equivalent to a 24" widescreen.

The picture is extremely clear at 480p and has the clarity of a computer monitor at 1080i. It does not have the ability to produce 720p, which is the only negative I have for this model. However, all OTA signals I've received and other digital sources, 1080i has always been supported.

I went ahead and bought a Samsung STB (T351) to enjoy "off the air" DTV signals as well. It does require a Set Top Box or some other digital source since it does not have a built in tuner. You can't expect a set in this price range to include this, nor is it really necessary if you are just wanted progressive scan ability.

If you're looking to purchase a CRT based television these days, there is no reason not to purchase an HDTV ready-set. This will extend it's usefulness as we approach the 2006 HDTV roll-out here in the U.S.

I've been very happy with this television and have a new found respect for Samsung. Only wish I had purchased it sooner. The DVDs are so vibrant and much improved in quality. The Xbox is wonderful in 480p.

Also, just to clarify an issue from another reviewer, this does indeed have a DVI-D input on it. It's in the PDF manual and its definitely on the set itself. Be sure to read the PDF link to learn more.

I purchased this for my lounge. My wife did not want a TV to dominate the room so I went for this model rather than something bigger or widescreen. I have not been disappointed. The picture quality is very good and is spectacular when viewing a DVD with a progressive scan player. Color is sharp and bright, darks are excellent too.
The only holdback is the sound reproduction through the TV speakers. It needs to be hooked up to a home cinema setup really. The standard speakers are quite basic and bass notes in particular suffer at higher volume levels. That said, a great buy at the price and a good looking box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value!!!, November 12, 2003

I USED TO ONLY LOOK AT SONY AS BEING THE BEST QUALITY, but I started to see that Samsung also was coming around with great products, usually at a CHEAPER PRICE,but nevertheless I found with this TV, my cell phone, and my HD-DVD Player that Samsung IS RELIABLE AND OFFERS GREAT VALUE. Don't be taken in by those people who are so stubbornly Sony customers, I think that as long as something works great and also looks great (Samsung designs are great) that the name on the product shouldn't matter much. You won't be dissappointed with this TV if you take into consideration what type of programs you will be watching(DNie makes regular cable still look great)....just be aware that this is not widescreen even though it is HD ready(....720p and 1080i, HD formats are both widescreen), which would be the only drawback I can find. Look for more great Samsung products in the future, and remember that SONY'S NOT THE ONLY GOOD BRAND OUT THERE :)

I purchased this Samsung TV in late June. The day it arrived the Television had electrical issues. I called Amazon and they wouldn't do a single thing for me. Samsung sent out a tech. to look at the TV but that took over three weeks. So I have a brand new TV that doesn't work and no other TV in the house for three weeks. Upon inspection the Tech. stated the issue was with the picture tube and he would need to order another tube for replacement. Remember this TV is one day old. The Tech told me the picture tube could take up to a month to arrive. I was seeing red by this time. I told him to order the new tube and I would continue to contact Amazon for a resoulution. Amazon stated they could do nothing about it go back to Samsung or if I chose I can sell the item as used on Amazon. You have got to be kidding me. Well three weeks later I check on the status of the new tube. Low and behold the tube has not even been orderd the Tech told me the tube cost more than the TV and Samsung denied replacement of the Tube. So know what. I called Samsung directly and had to pose a lawsuit It took 60 days for the for Samsung to offer a refund. So I was without a TV for almost 4 months because I didn't want to buy a new TV if the check never arrived. Samsung is awful and Amazon was no help at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy from Samsung - dysfunctional warranty service, December 16, 2004
This review is from: Samsung Tantus TXN2798HF 27" HD-Ready TV with DynaFlat Screen (Electronics)
I bought a Samsung HDTV (model TXN2798HF) from CompUSA in June 2004. It began having a problem in October, so I called Samsung for first-year warranty support. It took a half dozen calls to get authorization for a local service center to work on it. This service center determined the monitor was defective, after which point they got authorization from Samsung to replace the TV. I called Samsung dozens of times during the next month and a half, trying to find out the status of the replacement, each time being told a different story. Once I was told my local service center needed to send the old TV back before I could get the new TV sent, but when I then called the service center they told me that's not how they operate. Next Samsung told me a company in New Jersey would be sending the replacement, but when I called that company they told me that's not how they operate. Next Samsung told me they could not find the paperwork authorizing the warranty exchange. On and on it went. I have no confidence Samsung's incompetent customer service organization will ever solve this, so I wrote to my Visa company, asking them to get me my money back so I can buy a TV from a company that honors their warranty commitments.

I'll never buy anything from Samsung again.

---

Update from a couple months later: Samsung did eventually honor their warranty, and replaced my TV. I probably still will avoid buying their products in the future because I don't like to have to hassle with companies to get problems solved... and I'd chalk this one up to a very disorganized problem tracking system inside Samsung.

1.0 out of 5 stars no DVI listed wrong, January 20, 2004

neither this model nor any 27" samsung has a DVI port! A transcoder from DVI to componet jack is about $150.00.
