Great Sound / Great Price / Good Navigation,
By Nu Mantra (Earth, Universe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samsung Q1 8 GB Video MP3 Player with Lighted Touchpad (Black) (Electronics)
Firstly, let me say that one's inability to use a touch pad navigation should not factor into how good a player is. Basically, if you know how to send a text message (something I have never done), you can navigate this player! Complaining about a player you bought KNOWING had a touch pad navigation, is like complaining about the finger prints on a touch screen player. I just do not get it.
Now, the sound is great! There are many pre-determined audio enhancements you can select, or you can create your own. You can save up to 3 user defined audio settings. You can create playlists (5 of them) and delete songs on the fly. It has both a radio and datacasts. The pictures and videos are vibrant and you can easily set one of your photos as your background as well as change the text font. There is a text to speech function as well as subway maps of major cities with places of interests highlighted as well as a little information about them. Navigation is fairly easy, yes the touch pad might take some getting used to, but it just requires patience. The UI is intuitive and all that you want is just a slight tap/hold/swipe away. If you have ever listened to the P2 and loved it, well just know that the sound quality on the Q1 is just as good, some prof. reviews say it is even better. I was looking to purchase a 16gb refurbished P2 from Eoutletcadada, but they were out and I saw this player for much less, did some research on it and did not hesitate to order it. I paid under $80 including shipping. There are great demo videos on Youtube. There is someone there who has a 3 part demo and because of watching that, I have had no need to look at an instruction manual nor have I bothered installing the Emodio software. The player is pretty straight forward! The Q1 has all of the functions of Samsung's highly rated P2 except a touch screen and bluetooth. Also, instead of a 3 inch screen, it has a 2.4 in screen making it more portable. I own a Meizu M6; wonderful sound, but does not have the sophisticated UI's and "extras" like embedded art work and resume play on videos, etc. Such Chinese players tend to be much more customizable, play many more video and audio formats than big name brands, have expandable memory, and sound just as good or even better than the big name players. But they can be risky to buy for a number of reasons, one being the lack of customer support and consumer protection. Low prices and great sound/video have steered me to those players, but so long as I can get reliable refurbished Samsung players for the same price, I will opt for their conveniences and bells ans whistles. Having navigated the Meizu, which has a similar navigation system, made it easy for me to become accustomed to the Q1 in a matter of minutes. A HINT, do not press the navigational pad hard. I find it is much more accurate when I barely tap it, pretty much I use a quick, gentle swiping motion. If you want a great player with superb sound, great video, great album art (except when displayed in the larger size), you like the P2 (but don't need all of the aforementioned extras), give the Q1 a look. You will not be disappointed. Look into eoutletcanada if you do nt mind buying refurbished. I have purchased two of these and they came in perfect condition. Get your own earphones though. Do not let the proprietray connectors scare you away from this. I got extra USB chargers: wall, comp., and car from Ebay for about $10.00 delivered.

I have been a patron of Samsung for quite sometime and have owned four different MP3 players made by Samsung. The Q1 is decent in my opinion at best. First, it's a well built player as all Samsung players are. The sound quality is very good. However, the navigation on this player is a train wreck. The four-way center select buttons are a nightmare to use. It is so sensitive it's difficult to get to a specific tract on the first try and that's while I'm sitting stationary in a chair. Good luck trying to navigate on the move! Having 16GB of music on this player is awesome until you want to move to a particular artist or track it is s l o w going. I have only had this player for three weeks now, but if I were making recommendations to Samsung, it would be to take away the surgical sensitivity of the buttons and design the player with the ability to scroll quicker thru the tracks. I have always been a fan of Samsung players and will continue to be, but this one is somewhat of a disappointment. If only they made the P2, or the T9 is 16GB I'd be a happy consumer once again.
Update: I see that they now have the P2 available in 16GB. I will be buying one ASAP and putting the Q1 in a drawer.

When I read the reviews on this product I did not pay attention to those who cited the control function as being poor. I thought how hard can it be to press a directional control up or down? It is a beautifully stylish player, however upon trying to use it I exclaimed OMG...you have got to be kidding me!!! No matter hard I tried to precisely press the directional control it just failed to do what it was designed to do. I found that it was completely unusable and had to return it to Amazon. I did not even get a chance to judge it on all the other features that people loved about it.
Maybe next rev for this one!!!

The navigation buttons (tap pad) on this player are very nice with a cool blue glow. The screen is bigger than expected, especially nice to watch videos.FM Radio, photo viewer, games.... it has a lot of functionality but so does everyone.
But the most amazing thing on the Q1 is that it simply is the best sounding player I have ever heard. Samsung has been developing this DNSe sound system for a few years now and this is the first one of their players with version 3 of that sound engine. It makes all these 128 kbps encoded MP3 files sound truly amazing. If you really love listening to digital music on a portable player, you have to try your MP3 collection on the Q1. This blows away everyone else, especially iPod.

I've bought and tried 3 different portable media players and 2 of them just sucked balls, but this one is just beautiful!
Now Unless all of your video files are in wmv format you'll need to convert them, but unfortunately Samsung file converter doesn't work. No biggy though Just go and download "Any Video Converter" guess what it do.. right. This portable media player plays movies beautifully. It plays music beautifully as well. Oh and don't get me wrong Samsung other software found on disk that came with their media player works great! For example You can change pretty much everything on this media player Just look at the default picture here. It' kind of a ugly user interface screen right? Well you don't have to be stuck with it. You can personalize it to the extreme! Or pick a style of your liking. There's over 240 of them to choose from. 16 GB portable media player and it's under $120 dollars. What are you waiting for? BUY IT!

Excellent player, challenging controls,
This review is from: Samsung Q1 8 GB Video MP3 Player with Lighted Touchpad (Black) (Electronics)
I really like this player. For its price it has all I need: audio, radio and video, and the quality of each of them is great. I would recommend everyone on budget to consider this player.
The controls might be hard to some to use. I misclick sometimes too but it is not too bad. Instead I miss the chance to FEEL the buttons so that I could operate the player in my pocket. In this case it is very hard since I can't feel the buttons but instead the buttons are extremely sensitive so I might just end up messing my player up. I have 8 Gb player and have found that is large enough for my need. The downside is that if you have dozens of different artists it takes some time to find the correct tracks using whichever search function if you don't do some tricks beforehand. E.g. you could arrange the music in hierarchical folders (folders inside a folder) so you can find whichever artist with several clicks. Battery life is a small disappointment. If you plan to switch tracks often you might have to turn the screen brightness and on-time to the smallest settings which makes using the player difficult outdoors. I haven't checked how long the battery lasts in my normal use but my wild guess would be 10 hours or a bit more if I keep changing tracks now and then. However, I have NO experience with other large screen players so I have no clue if I am complaining of anything serious. 5 stars for satisfaction(quality)/price, -1 star for the controls (I personally don't care too much)
