1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible reception, poor call quality
Business users, take note: This phone is a portable dead zone.

Do not purchase this phone if reception in your primary area of use is anything less than blow-your-doors-off, full bars at all times. The SLM's antenna is exceptionally weak, and the operation system has enormous difficulty logging onto and holding varying signals. As a result, calls are dropped...

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish there was a 4.5 rating-SWEETUM PHONE, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Samsung a747 SLM Silver Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
Wow this phone is RAD! Ive had it for 2 weeks and I'm already in love. This is my first phone and I paid $130 for it at the AT&T sorte after rebates....i know pretty expensive huh? I was deciding between this phone and the Samsung SGH A707. I was doing alot of research on the internet and figured out the pros and cons and my favorites of each phone. When I finally went to the store to get one they looked pretty different in my hand then on the websites. I only had a couple minutes because the clerk was waiting for me to hurry up. I compared the sizes of the sides, the overall shape (I wanted it to fit in my pocket), the color, and the features. I didnt see the price of the SLM since it wasnt on display so i didnt realyl know what i was in for. The Red Samsung SGH A707 was $40 but i didnt care. I felt like i had a better deal. I brought i home and startd playing with it as soon as i could. It was so cool how it had internet!! I went on my email and looked at all the ringtones and all the cooll features. Later I learned that it cost me money for every minute i was on there.....thats the down part. so my mom went to the store and canceled it. its still very tempting but i realize thats what computers are for.

The Front screen of the phone its pretty great. Its not huge but who needs a huge screen? You can set it to have one of your pictures or you can set it to a clock. It tell syou how many bars you have, how the battery is doing, what day it is, and if you have a new message of if someone is calling. However, it doesnt use as a view finder for the camera. Guess why? cause the camera can rotate! IT smivels back and forth so you can take self portrates with the phone still open, and facing you. The strange part of this is that when you have the camera facing you, you show as upside down....but that does make a huge difference, because once you take the piture you can rotate it. Another down part of this phone is that id doesnt have a camera button on the outside part of the phone (or permanent inside button, but i live without it.

This phone is very sleek and I was surprised to find out that it *does* fit in my pocket! there are no bumps or raised parts and so it is very easy to carry around. I was also glad to find that I havent lost this phone since it is a decent size. soem phoens are just to small for me but this one is just right.

On the side of this wonderful phone there is the volume adjusters and on the other side is a headset jack/charger slot and a MicroSD card slot. The headset jack lets you listen to music without letting the whole world know what you are listening to.

if you open the phone up you see a great screen and the key pad. The screen doesnt do too good in the light but I dont find that very frusterating. On the key pad, I thought that the green and red phone symbols were very stylish. Above them is the Music shortcut and a Mulittasker button....very nice. if you are sending a text message but then remember you had to call someone immaditaly but dont want to exit your message? then VOLIA this is the button for you. you can take your call and then once you're dont you can hang up and get back to your message without haveing to rewrite it! Now thats what im talking about.

Above those keys are the soft keys which dont need much explaning, since every phone has them. beside those is the 'cilver circle' i call it. The Cirlce has its navigation things like left right up and down and an OK in the middle. If you're on the main screen though the OK button uses as a brower shrot cut. the up button is a shortcut to a text message, the left button is a shortcut to MyStuff they call it. the right button is a chat button where you can...you know....chat! While i was poking all the buttons, I also discovered that the Clear button (below the 'cilver circle') is a short cut to the calender. Sneaky Sneaky!

If your're thinking about chooseing this phone stop thinking (save up) and buy it now!

I suggest looking at CNET at www.cnet.com or if you wanna get a specific review about this phone, go to http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phones/samsung-slm-sgh-a747/4505-6454_7-32751900.html?tag=prod.txt.1 even though they are a little harsh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Samsung A747, May 11, 2009
Nice phone with everything I need. I don't text, email, or use my phone for anything more than voice communication, and this phone is perfect for this. It does have a very good camera that I use once in awhile as well.
It's as thin and light as the Razr, but the main screen is much easier to read in the sunlight.
I've had the phone for 6 months and I would recommend it to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible reception, poor call quality, December 16, 2008

Business users, take note: This phone is a portable dead zone.

Do not purchase this phone if reception in your primary area of use is anything less than blow-your-doors-off, full bars at all times. The SLM's antenna is exceptionally weak, and the operation system has enormous difficulty logging onto and holding varying signals. As a result, calls are dropped or fail to dial through at all, and text messages sit undelivered in the outbox or remain unreceived well past the time when they were sent. Also, when calls do connect, the speaker and microphone provide muddy, strangely clipped sound fidelity.

The SLM gets points for its slim, lightweight form factor and easy-to-use navigation, but the frustrations and embarrassments of a phone that cannot provide basic telecommunications far outweigh any other purchasing concern.

5.0 out of 5 stars great phone, easy to use, November 1, 2008
This review is from: Samsung a747 SLM Silver Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
I wish I had selected this one for myself. The A747 has a bigger screen than the A737 (comparing both phones my kids have), and has clear menus. The central control area lets your finger just slide easily around to all the compass points to hit your shortcuts. Good sound & picture quality, uses a standard mini SD card you can get cheaply nearly anywhere. Holds lots of mp3s. Keypad is excellent size for large fingers (and moms with blurry eyesight) just the right size for typing, and this model feels right in your hand. This flip phone is easy to open and feels solidly made. My teenager has it, but I'd like to swap. Too bad he won't appreciate my phone; it's pink!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great phone, great service., June 27, 2008

Phone is even better than I thought. AT&T wanted to charge $49.99 for this phone with a 2-yr contract. Amazon paid me $84.99 to take it with the exact same contract terms. The phone is very similar to a Motorola RAZR, but without the RAZR pricetag. Photos and video are very clear. Speakerphone is kind of quiet, but other than that no problems. Battery is good for 4-5 days of light use between charges, more charging with more moderate use. I was skeptical on the rotating camera lens but it turned out to be great. You can rotate it out of the way to keep the lens clean. Get a holster and data cable on eBay. With the data cable you can store mp3s on your sim card and even use them as ringtones. The sim card that came with my phone from Amazon is a MicroSD and is 2GB in size. Buttons are easy to press and text messaging is a snap. AT&T service is outstanding. So far I've only used the phone in Houston and across Louisiana to New Orleans. I never lost service but it did go in and out of 3G data range. This is not a problem, would just make data transfer slower when you are outside 3G range. Signal is great despite no retractable antenna.

Pros:
Battery life
Ease of use
Large memory
2.0 Megapixel camera
Video camcorder
Phone is light and thin
Bluetooth can connect with laptop for dial-up internet access
Good alternative to the RAZR, maybe even better than Motorola
1 year warranty comes standard from Samsung

Cons:
I wish the speakerphone was a bit louder, even in highest volume.
Internet key is too easy to push. If you push it you could inadvertently get internet charges.

3.0 out of 5 stars Features don't make up for poor reception, August 10, 2008

This review is from: Samsung a747 SLM Silver Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
I bought this to replace a first-generation RAZR, and after spending time with it was able to set it up to operate the way I want. But that was rather futile since its reception is not good enough in my semi-rural area in western Mass. Where the RAZR gets 1 or 2 bars, good enough for a phone conversation, the Samsung gets a solid 0 bars (or maybe a flickering 1 bar). Calls drop or are distorted. Maybe the RAZR V3 for me.
