Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Keep your friends and family close even when you're away. The compact Samsung SGH-t219 lets you choose how to connect with robust calling, text messaging, and instant messaging capabilities. Other features include an internal antenna, speakerphone, Java support for downloadable games and applications, compatibility with T-Mobile's myFaves service, and more.

Design
Inside the t219's sleek clamshell you'll find a large, yet crisp and clear 128 x 160 color LCD display with support for over 65,000 colors. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary monochrome LCD display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. Lastly, because the t219 has an internal antenna, there's nothing to snag or break off.

Calling Features
The t219's phone book can handle up to 1,000 of your contacts, and you can store up to five numbers per entry, plus an email address, and a note. In addition to having a discreet vibrating alert, the t219 supports polyphonic ringtones, which means you can really jazz up your incoming calls with some cool tunes. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone, and more ringtones can be downloaded from T-Mobile's t-zones service. You can also assign ringer IDs and picture IDs to your favorite callers. Like all T-Mobile phones, the t219 supports voice mail, caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, built-in paging, and access to T-Mobile's 411 service.

This phone is fully compatible with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
When it comes to messaging and Internet connectivity, the t219 has you covered. The phone features support for Yahoo!, AOL, MSN, and ICQ instant messaging applications (T-Mobile messaging charges apply). There's also a built-in WAP Web browser for t-zones downloads and mobile Web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. Traditional text messaging is also supported by the phone. T9 text entry, which is a predictive text entry technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the t219, including a voice memo recorder that allows up to a minute of recording time per memo, a calculator with unit converter, a to-do list, a calendar, and an alarm clock.

Imaging and Entertainment
The t219 is easily customized to suit your style. Screen savers, themes, and wallpapers can be set to your tastes, and you can even browse and download more wallpapers from the t-zones service. The t219 is Java-enabled, meaning it supports games and application downloads written on the Java platform. Games are available via the T-Mobile t-zones service.

The t219 also sports a flight mode feature, which allows the user to safely use the non-wireless functions of a phone (such as music, games or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight.

Vital Statistics
The Samsung SGH-t219 weighs 2.80 ounces and measures 3.46 x 1.77 x 0.78 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6 hours of digital talk time, and up to 8.8 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/1800/1900 MHz GSM frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexy little red phone has the basics, good speakerphone, basic internet, portable flip phone , July 15, 2007
Looks: 8/10; this phone is definitely a looker. Red, and silver, with black on top of the flip where the glass is. It has a RED KEYPAD!

Ruggedness/Physical build quality: 7.5/10
Feels strong like diecast metal. Battery cover is thin, flimsy and scratches somewhat easy.

Call quality: 6.5/10
What cell phone is always clear? None I have owned..:)

Internet capability: 6/10
OK for text, checking your webmail, this will work OK. Sites with lots of graphics will SUCK BAD! You can't scroll left/right with it.

Battery life: 9/10
Excellent; I could have used it for probably 4 hous of constant web and voice. Excellent backup phone to keep in the glove box or in the purse for you ladies.

However the battery cover scratches VER EASILY. It is silver, not red, so the scratches are not as noticeable. The rest of the body of the phone does not scratch like the battery cover does.

I could easily take the battery cover, and a can of primer and a can of red duplicolor spray paint and go to town on this battery back, but that's more then most would want to do of course.

Menu and Software/OS: 6.5/10
I really don't think they put much time into this menu system, it's not very customizeable aor intuitive. Some things take 3 menu levels to get to. But you can assign shortcuts to the 4 way toggle button which is a good thing. However, you are limited in the things you can link to it; you cannot have the contacts/phonebook be one of them. I think you can make a link to those on the 2 buttons that appear on the bottom of the screen, but not sure yet.

The menu system is fairly simple, though.

The keypad is nice, it's red and it has partially raised keys, I felt it was pretty good. A little small, but that is what happens when you buy a small phone!

JAva support: 4/10
One thing I don't like about this phone is that if you install a java program, like say Gmail, it does not give gmail access to the internet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good basic phone, December 17, 2007
If you're like me and just want a basic phone, without all the extras, this one's a good choice. I got it to replace my old LG model, and I've been happy with the change. This Samsung is slender and decidedly not bulky, but it has relatively large keys that make dialing, etc., a breeze. It's set up like your standard cell phone--no new formats to get used to. I don't use the internet on my phone, so I can't speak to that.

The one con I will mention is that the back of the phone (the battery cover) seems very flimsy--I don't know what Samsung was thinking when it designed it. It seems like it's made of thin plastic. So if you're hard on your phone, this model might not be the way to go. Otherwise, I have no complaints. Its battery charges quickly, and the phone stays charged longer than my LG did. The charge portal is in a weird spot--took me a moment to find--and also has a flimsy cover. But overall, not bad, not bad at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Voicemail delays days and broke after 1 year!, October 8, 2008
By krango (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
My wife and I got these phones free from T-Mobile as part of a 2-year contract renewal. We previously had no-frills Nokia phones that worked great, but decided to "upgrade" and get these more compact phones. T-Mobile signal (in Chicago) came through great on our old Nokia phones... Not so much on these. Not only do calls drop, but-- and this is big-- voicemail messages come through a day or two late! We would get meeting re-schedules, greetings, etc. days after they were sent, and would constantly have to apologize to our friends & family for our crummy phone's voicemail delay. Good thing we weren't using this phone as a business line! After a year of putting up with these phones, my wife's just 100% completely died! ...after only a year! Do yourself a favor, and get a better phone than this. I hate to blame a whole company on one product, but it may be a long time before I buy Samsung again.
