10 and up5 and up
When Samuel and Martha are sent to Norway to live with their Aunt Eda after their parents' deaths, they soon learn her most important rule: NEVER-UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES-GO INTO THE FOREST. She doesn't offer an explanation, but Samuel suspects it might have something to do with a strange guidebook he finds in her attic: The Creatures of Shadow Forest. And when Martha wanders into the trees and is captured by some of the creatures described in the book, Samuel has no choice but to go in after her. What he finds there is an eerie world populated by trolls, truth pixies and other fantastical crea

About the Author

Matt Haig is the author of two adult novels, The Dead Fathers Club and The Last Family in England. UK reviewers have said of his writing: "totally engrossing," "touching, quirky and macabre," "a comic tour de force," and "so surprising and strange that it vaults into a realm all of its own . . . most of all it allows Haig to indulge his innocently acute eye for detail and his delightfully weird imagination." Samuel Blink and the Forbidden Forest is his first novel for young readers. He lives in the UK. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't go much under ten for the reader's age, March 8, 2008
I started to read this to my 6 year old and though she liked it, she said to stop reading it even before the boy enters the forest - too scary and sad (the parents die in a car wreck, sister becomes an elective mute, Samuel hates his aunt who lost her husband to the forest) and the forest is described in scary terms. I continued to read it to myself and thought it was a great boook (I read the end to my daughter and she liked that).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, December 31, 2008
I am always on the lookout for new books for my grandchildren. This one fits the bill. It is scary, but not too scary....funny....sad.....and has a good ending. I would not recommend it for children under the age of 10 to 12 though. It will definitely be on my grandsons' gift list for next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read!!, November 15, 2007
My nine-year-old couldn't put this book down--it is well-written and interesting, with just enough suspense and comedy for a boy this age.
