I have been waiting for this volume for over 1 year. it was the last in the series to be released. i have both the complete ot commentary and complete nt commentary in this series. i have started other books in this series but never finsihed them. it is my goal over the next year to finish both the ot and nt commentary from holman.
i have to say that these are excellent commentaries. i started with 1&2 samuel because it was the last one and i have waited so long for, but also i just started reading these books in my bible.
the only thing i was hesitant about was these commentaries are based on the niv translation. i perfer the king james or the new king james. having said that there is alot of cross references to other translations, so dont let that be an issue.
this really is an exciting series of commentary books. here is how each section is broken down.
they group any where from 3-5 chapters in a section. there are 8 catagories that cover each section.
1.) introduction
2.) commentary
3.) conclusion
4.) life application
5.) prayer
6.) deeper discoveries
7.) teaching outline
8.) issues for discussion
what i like about this series is the author tells of modern examples of life and people that deal with the chapters you are studing. there is commentary almost verse by verse or a couple of verses combined. prayer and ways you can apply the lessons toward your own life. and a teaching outline that can help a group study. dates are given to show what time events took place. there are a few cross references to certain verses discussed.
if you want individual studies on certain books of the bible, this commentary is a great addition to your library. buy the set of the ot and nt and save big.

I & II Samuel by Max Anders is an instalment in the Holman series of Old Testament Commentaries. The Holman series takes a life application approach to scripture seeking to identify key teaching within the text and link them to the reader's life.

While I am by no means opposed to the application of biblical teaching to day-to-day life this type of commentary is not my particular cup of coffee. Aimed at a non-academic audience the text employs a variety of techniques/gimmicks to keep the readers' attention, such as the frequent use of boxes, captions, font changes, lists of key points and discussion questions. While the effort to make the material accessible is commendable it is overdone in this case, resulting in a product that feels superficial. It is unfortunate that more textual and interpretative questions were not discussed. There have been some exciting developments in recent Samuel scholarship, e.g. Dead Seas' documents pertaining to I Samuel 10:25 - 11:2 and the resultant biblical changes it would have been helpful to at least note these developments. Additionally, while some of the application examples, drawn from contemporary personalities, were unobjectionable others such as the one pertaining to Tiger Woods were counterproductive.

Overall, this commentary it is probably of interest only to readers looking for a quick overview of I & II Samuel. Readers seeking a more comprehensive analysis are better served by a mainstream academic commentary.

I teach bible classes and I like this because it is a good resource, and I especially like the stories that are included which add to the study.

It was such a joy reading this book. Never realized reading bible could be so exciting. Reading the Books of Samuel is like watching a TV episode with lots of actions and drama.
