Editorial Reviews

1971 Release by this Relatively Obscure British Four Piece. Like Many Great Bands of the Period, They Had a Fantastic Live Act and their Self-titled Debut was a Heavy Mix of Psych and Blues that Still Sound Fresh Over Thirty Years Later.

"Samuel Prody" - one album wonder from UK (1970), which should be appreciated by true fans of early Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and by hardcore addicts of proto-metal. This short-lived band was brainchild of London-based guitarist, singer and songwriter Tony Savva, who went through various minor British bands of the first wave of the 60s. Their claim to fame and glory went almost unnoticed (apart from being managed by infamous self-styled "Godfather" of show-biz, Don Arden, and by Andrew Loog Oldham. Trivia: Keith Moon was willing to join one of the early incarnations, Tony Savva was auditioned for Jimi Hendrix Experience and fortunately was turned down.
In early 70s Tony Savva resurfaced with "Giant" (not unfamiliar name for collectors of early metal), relocated to Brighton, and the new act was baptised "Samuel Prody" (due to unknown reasons they wanted to become Purdy, but wisely enough chose to avoid eventual collision with famous gunsmiths): Tony Savva as frontman, lead singer and songwriter, John Boswell - drummer extraordinaire (!), Derek Smallcombe - lead guitar, Stephen Day - bass.
There were similarities with the music of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but the new act were innovative visionaries with their own distinctive sound and unique approach. The opening "Who Will Buy" starts as chanting of early Christians led by chrystal clear voice (although it lacks the power and raw sex appeal of Plant, it is strong, melodic and convincing) - by the way, this concept preceeded many Christian rock acts and, in particular, the cult "Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus", before erupting into wild and heavy psychedelia with high-register screaming.
