5.0 out of 5 stars Samurai Deeper Kyo, July 8, 2003
This review is from: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Book 1 (Paperback)
Don't you just love Japanese history? Afterall, it's filled with samurais, swords, and great potential to stick in some very interesting characters indeed. Good thing Samurai Deeper Kyo possess all of these and more.

Taking place during the Edo Era of Japan, Samurai Deeper Kyo is a story about a young man named Mibu Kyoshiro, a wandering medicine peddler whom tires easily, whines every now and then, is very clumsy, and, of course, is quite peaceful despite it all. That is, until you make him mad. You wouldn't like him when he's mad. His eyes turn blood red, and the innocent Kyoshiro transforms into the not-so-innocent Demon Eyes Kyo, the "legendary killer of a thousand men". No longer is he reluctant to participate in any acts of violence; on the contrary, Kyo, the dark spirit residing within Kyoshiro, actually enjoys slaying.

This is but the background to a great developing plot, because soon Kyoshiro meets up with a bounty huntress named Yuya Shiina, who ends up following him on his journey to somehow collect the one million ryo bounty on Kyo's head.

The artwork is enjoyable throughout the manga, effectively expressing the quickness of the action scenes, which I especially liked. Each page is detailed, especially when it comes to the character designs. The art is obviously more shonen then anything else, but the story itself should appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

If you like comedy, action, evil-spirit-alter-egos, and wonderful beginning hints of character and plot development, (not to mention samurais! Yay!) you definitely need to pick up a copy of Samurai Deeper Kyo. It's well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Samurai Deeper Kyo- action, comedy, and a bit of romance, September 9, 2004

I am one of those type of people that are very picky about the type of manga that they read. I love action, but I need some comedy and romance is nice when it adds to the plot.....and Samurai Deeper Kyo satisfies all of these. I am also fond of historical Japan manga and it was intersting to read one during this time in Japan, since, at least as far as I have read, very few are set during that time period.

The charater design is crisp and clear and the fight scenes are also well drawn and clear (with other mangas I would sometimes would have to analyze the picture during a fight scene just to get a grip on what is going on) The plot has many twists and turns to keep you very entertained.

Over all I think it is an excellent manga and the only fault I have with it is that they aren't published fast enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un-original ????, October 10, 2003
This review is from: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Book 1 (Paperback)
Some people say this plot is un-original. Well its history and might now be original but its got good designs, fun to read, lovable characters. What else would you want? Even if the plot is un-original. I have read many similar manga but I like Samurai Deeper Kyo more then any similar manga. This book is a must read ^ ^ I plan on buying the whole set.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awsome manga ^.^, February 11, 2004

I love this book, next time I come near a manga section in a store I'll pick number 2 up. Kyoshiro is a normal medicine peddler until he gets mad.....then kyo of the demon eyes comes out! Yuya is a bounty huntress.....with additude(her character kind of reminds me of Faye Valentine). When they meet, all hell breaks loose. We see a new side of Kyoshiro, a perverted side that is......

5.0 out of 5 stars Kenshin ain't got nothin on Kyo, June 11, 2003
This review is from: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Book 1 (Paperback)
OMG I just read this Manga a couple of days ago it was my first ever Manga and what a way to bring me further into the anime world. The year is 1604 4 years after the longest and most bloodiest Civil War in Japanese history and from that batle comes an evil legend and a heavy bounty for the Samurai known as "Demon Eyes's Kyo" the man who killed 1,000 men in the last battle. One day when a simple medicine peddler by the name of Mibu Kyoshiro runs into a bounty hunter by the name of Yuya Shiina who thinks that the medicine peddler is Kyo (for her defense this guy looks really really like kyo could he actually be the legendary samurai?). As their journey continues Kyoshiro starts to a little odd and the oddness grows day by day. Jut when Yuya thinks that Kyoshiro is just some lune something awsome and scary happens Demon Eyes Kyo appears but Kyoshiro is gone now could these be in the same body. Excellent story action and violence and of course teasing with women read for enjoyment and for a real page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars good, July 26, 2011
This review is from: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Book 1 (Paperback)
Several of the earlier pages had been colored with color pencil by a prevous owner. The coloring wasn't too shabby. Other than that, the book was in good condition.

At the battle of Sekigahara, one lethal fighter stood above them all -- the red-eyed, bloodthirsty Demon Eyes Kyo, killer of a thousand men. Now he's sharing the body of a goofy medicine peddler.

That's the rather odd concept for "Samurai Deeper Kyo," even though it sounds a wee bit like a bloodier, less inspiring knockoff of "Rurouni Kenshin." The first volume of this VERY long-running series suffers from some major mood swings (Goofy! Gory! Goofy! Gory!) but it has an intriguing premise, some likable characters, and hints of future storylines. It's a solid if fragmented beginning.

Medicine peddler Kyoshiro Miba is wandering through the countryside when he comes across an ill, nubile young girl -- and just when he's about to get frisky, she reveals herself to be the bounty huntress Yuya Shiina. Somehow, she's mistaken him for Demon Eyes Kyo, who has a one million ryo reward on his head.

But since a much much much smaller price has been put on Kyoshiro, Yuya drags him to the next village -- only to find that a pair of cruel bandit brothers have been butchering the locals. Yuya agrees to stop the bandits for the villagers, but soon discovers that she's horribly outmatched -- and when Kyo is beaten up defending her, his eyes suddenly turn red and he becomes a taunting, bloodthirsty killer of unimaginable skill.

Yup, when he's in danger and unsheathes his sword, he becomes Demon Eyes Kyo. Exact details are not revealed.

Determined to get the reward, Yuya sticks with Kyoshiro on his wandering journey -- and immediately hits another obstacle when they become enmeshed in a clash between a village of fallen samurai and a local Daikan. To make matters worse, they're being stalked by a creepy, lusty miko with an interest in Demon Eyes Kyo, and an old enemy that is determined to have another match with the killer of a thousand men.

The first volume of "Samurai Deeper Kyo" suffers from an overhanging problem: mood swings. Granted it's not uncommon in manga to swing between grim'n'gory and light'n'comedic, but the changes in "Samurai Deeper Kyo Volume 1" are so abrupt that it gives you whiplash. And the changes are pretty extreme: one minute Yuya and Kyoshiro are being goofy and sitcommy on the road, and the next there are dismembered bodies everywhere.

However it's got some fun humor ("Long swords look cooler!"), and spectacularly gory, savage fight scenes full of slicing swords and crazy-eyed enemies, as well as some sharp retorts from Kyo ("He can't help you. He knows you're already dead," he says with a big smile"). The characters haven't been explored much yet, but they're pretty likable so far -- Kyoshiro is a goodhearted goofball who has a nasty habit of letting his raging hormones do the thinking, and Yuya is a butt-kicking young woman with a triple flintlock pistol.

And Akimine Kamijyo is pretty clearly gearing up for a pretty epic story, with hints about hidden quests and old enemies from Kyo's past. And of course, there's the whole question of just how two men ended up existing in the same body -- one of them apparently harmless, lecherous and goofy, and the other a ruthless grinning killer. Or is Kyoshiro just suffering from a split personality?

"Samurai Deeper Kyo Volume 1" has some whiplash mood swings, but it's a promising start to Akimine Kamijyo's medieval action series. And it improves from here on.

4.0 out of 5 stars goodness, February 7, 2004
This review is from: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Book 1 (Paperback)
This manga was pretty good, if you stick around to try the later volumes in the series it gets better.
It does start out a lot like Rurouni Kenshin, but it turns out they are very different. Do not be alarmed.
Samurai Deeper has interesting characters, wonderful art, hot guys and a female character (Yuya-san) who actually isn't that annoying! ^^ yay
If you like swords, blood and... some glimpses of the female body, then give it a shot. (If you are into that stuff and can handle the Maturity) Again, stick around for the later volumes too, it does get better. ~read up~

This is a very good read. The story is quite fun. I was kept entertained through the whole volume. The character design is well done. The story contained in this first volume leaves me hungry for more. I will definitely be buying the second volume.
