In a school where martial arts are standard curriculum, it takes more than great grades to rise to the top of the class. As rival students at Daimon High throw down their best moves in all-out K-Fight battle, the action in the ring heats up more than ever. Samurai Girl Ryoko is set on breaking bones as a Samurai Nurse, but there are plenty of challengers ready to knock her out for good! And with teachers entering the ring to duke it out, all bets are off. Who has time for homework when there’s a battle to catch?

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking down barrier, June 3, 2006

This review is from: Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School #2 (Paperback)
"Real Bout High School" gains speed and strength in its second volume, as we get to know the characters and see a few more entertaining, action-packed battles. Reiji Saiga still has some flaws in the series -- like how new characters are introduced -- but it's still high-octane fun.

A new K-fight is about to begin: Star fighter Shizuma is facing off against a TEACHER, Mr. Saotome. And though Ryoko pretends that it has nothing to do with her, Shizuma's victory changes her life even more, now that Real Bout is ruled by battle rather than by school rules. She certainly isn't getting much studying done.

But Ryoko is thinking about other things than fighting, such as the handsome, quiet Tatsuya. She prepares for a school play, scrabbles with various thugs on the school grounds, rejects creepy guys, and threatens shutterbug/stalker Daiseku. But then Ryoko receives a shocking piece of news about Tatsuya, which could derail all her hopes...

The second volume of "Real Bout High School" is a bit slower and more character-based than the first. The whole first chapter is crammed with fighting, and Ryoko, Shizuma and another guy have a humorous battle later on ("Justice is served!" Ryoko says cheerfully, sitting on a downed enemy). It wouldn't be "Real Bout" if nobody fought.

But the pace slows down as we get to know Ryoko, Tatsuya and all the other characters. Saiga has a tendency to just drop the characters in without introduction or warning, so it's nice to get to know them. And there's even more humor in this one, such as Ryoko and Hitomi spending the day together. Toxic cooking, superhuman workouts, and surreal graduation practice ensues!

Ryoko gets the most expansion in this volume; we get to see her strong, embarrassed, freaked out, and explosive. We also get some idea of her insecurities, and what makes her tick. Tatsuya is a dark horse still, but Shizuma is making it pretty clear that he likes Ryoko, although the feeling isn't mutual yet. (How many times has he asked out out to eat?)

The second "Real Bout High School" is a solid expansion on the first volume, with a good balance of action and solid characters. Adrenaline packed comedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars getting better, July 31, 2004

I wasn't sure how I felt about this series after reading the first volume, but in this volume it seems to be getting better. In this volume, Shizuma participates in a K-Fight with a teacher, and Ryoko and Tatsuya are in a play together. This volume gives readers a little more insight into Ryoko, although Tatsuya seems to become more mysterious. I'm still not sure how much more in going on in Shizuma's mind, other than his next fight, but I like him anyway. Daisaku, Ryoko's biggest fan, is around for a bit, being cute and more than a bit stalker-like. I'm still not sure if I would recommend this series, but at least is seems to be getting better. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Azumi another fighter!!, October 26, 2003
This review is from: Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School #2 (Paperback)
in this vol. they start a k-fight where all the samuri's og to fight, and of course the first is shizuma, he is honestly funny, but thne gets into a fight with a teacher which really lights the fire, and of course a new contestant eneters the fight, she keeps that smile on her face and never takes it off, that is azumi, while her fighting with shizuma she spots ryokos crush and hugs him and thati s what makes ryoko realll y fierce by saying"that gate crashing little harlot" really funny, and that is when her and azumi fight both are quick at speed and movement, but in the end ryoko wins the match and azumi'ds smile is wiped off her face, then we find out later that her crush is leaving and that is what makes ryoko really go down the hill.....
