AN 80s GEM RESURFACES ...,
By STEPHEN JACKSON (HARDWICK, CAMBS United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samurai (Audio CD)
Samurai, alongside earlier release There For None To See, which spawned the classic single Keep On Believing, represents the best of 1980s pop - rock. Filling a gap between the likes of Uriah Heep and Duran Duran, Rob McAuley`s passionate vocals soar over lush keyboards and crunching guitar, bass and drums. Terrific live, Grand Prix always sounded a little under-produced on vinyl ( memories of which provide the basis for this review ), which will hopefully be "cured" by the digital remastering. Strong songs, especially the title track, and strong performances mark this as their stand-out release. Bigger in Japan than elsewhere, I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times, once headlining and once supporting Iron Maiden c Piece of Mind. Fans of Journey, Angel, Uriah Heep, Asia, Thin Lizzy, MSG and melodic rock in general owe it to themselves to own this CD. Let`s hope someone sees sense and releases their earlier product too ! A classic album from a much-underrated band. If you own the likes of Escape, Frontiers, Abominog, MSG 1 and 2, Live and Dangerous and Strangers in the Night, buy this !!!

I've been trying to locate this on CD for about ten years ! This record is the Holy Grail of early 80s hard rock ! Hearing "Shout" still makes my blood boil after all this time !!!It's great to be able to find rare gems like this on the internet. I'm really looking forward to being able to blast this in my truck cd player. Just like being 16 again. If you are a fan of melodic hard rock and metal - do yourself a favor. Buy this CD. If it'd been a $... imported copy, I'd still have bought it without a second thought. Share and enjoy. Bill.

Louder is the song on this album that is best known to me. I like the album, but not the price they want. If look are or know someone that is good at searching the internet you can find it to down load for way cheaper than buying the CD or album.

EXCELLENT ROCK MUSIC,

I was just transferring this from vinyl to CD and decided to do a search and was surprised by the $100 price tag for the CD. I was fortunate enough to purchase this on vinyl back around 1983 or so and it is a gem of an album. The songs are very well written and Robin McAuley is in fine form. When I purchased it I knew nothing about the band but I used to purchase many records that way and have come across some gems. I don't know if any single CD is worth $100 but if you can find this for less and enjoy solid, well performed, melodic rock music, it's a no-brainer! 20 something years later I still love it!
