I've had this umbrella for a month now and have really enjoyed it. While I would not attempt to take it through airport security due to its weapon-like appearance, I do carry it everyday. It definitely garners its share of looks. The handle feels very comfortable in hand and the length of the handle means both hands can easily be used to wield the umbrella when encountering strong winds or water-gun wielding ninjas. The material and mechanism of the umbrella are good quality and it opens smoothly with a single click of a button.

The nylon "sheath" is also very practical due to the extra-long, adjustable strap. It allows one to wear it across the back or over the shoulder -- a hands-freeing feature that very few other umbrellas have. The sheath is also where my only complaint comes from. The umbrella is significantly heavier on the handle end which pulls the handle end down. Unless worn across the back or balanced by a hand, the handle end will want to dip down and the umbrella can accidentally slide out. While mildly bothersome, I find it an acceptable trade-off for the easy draw action the sheaf affords.

PROS:
++Unique, distinctive appearance
++Good quality
++Extra long handle
++Easy draw, adjustable "sheath"/cover

CONS:
--Handle end wants to slide down in certain cases when worn in sheath and not steadied

I would highly recommend this for those who would enjoy a unique take on a ubiquitous item.

Before I ordered this umbrella I had a few questions that I wanted answers to, but ultimately I couldn't find. The build quality is quite good! The handle seems to be a high impact plastic that doesn't feel cheap or fragile. The shaft of the umbrella appears to be carbon fiber and is light but strong. The balance is such that it feels like a practice sword, but perhaps a bit lighter. The umbrella can be drawn from the shoulder sheath without taking it off. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

We've been having our typical awful winter weather this past few weeks in San Francisco. Unfortunately, my old Walgreens mini umbrella fell victim to a gale force wind one day and subsequently thrusted me into the market for a new umbrella.

Enter...the Samurai Umbrella. A coworker had just received one as a Christmas present, which is how I came to know this amazing piece of craftsmanship. This was the first time I have ever seen a product and thought "this is the best model of a device that will ever exist." In other words, you will be hard pressed to ever find an umbrella that is as well-built, clever, and has a knack for starting conversations as the Samurai Umbrella.

Just last night as I was commuting back home on my back, I had the umbrella firmly strapped around my torso, and another biker came up behind me and remarked, "I bet drivers make sure to give you the right away when they see that sword on you." I just laughed and explained my sheathed weapon was actually just an umbrella. His face looked like his brain might have just exploded inside his cranium. It really is that amazing.

Construction/quality...the big question on any product. You won't find an umbrella under $100 with better craftsmanship. This umbrella opens smooth like a deadly ninja assassin. It's very solid and feels precision-made. The long handle allows for a great grip during heavy winds and the grips actually functions to improve your grip on the device even more.

It really is a great product. I've been an Amazon customer for many years now, but this is my first review. I felt compelled to let other people know how terrific this item is because I love it so much. This is the second product I own by Kikkerland, the first being a magnetic kitchen timer. The timer's another great product, so it's definitely a brand to keep your eye on for smart, well-made products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful., September 21, 2009

This is my new main umbrella. The handle's very sturdy plastic, and looks great. When open, the umbrella itself looks a bit like a classic bowl-shaped black brolly you'd see in an old movie. The button to open it is just where you'd nudge a sword out of the sheath before drawing.

The carrying case is fun, and well-made, but I probably won't keep it around and sheathe a wet umbrella into it once the rains start here.

Hits the rare instersection of both whimsical and useful. Nice price, too. I may give one or two for the holidays.

Very interesting item that I received as a Father's Day gift. Definitely not something you want to try and pack through Airport Security. Sure, they wouldn't find anything wrong, but they just might waste another 30 minutes of your time inspecting before deciding that, yes, it is just an umbrella. Perhaps it will be used when I go walking in the morning. With this slung over my back all those white-haired women with the yap yap dogs may suddenly decide to move to the other side of the street.

This umbrella cuts through rain with the quickness and stealth of a true samurai! Haveing recently weathered some hard rain in which my old, small unbrella feel victim, I was in need of an upgrade. Cue, the Samurai Umbrella! It arrived one day before the worst rain in Rhode Island in the past 500 years! Day after day this thing took a beating....it kept me dry and stood up strong to driving rains and wind.

The truth must sound out. I even went so far as to post pictures so people can understand that I'm not feeding baloney here.

First, let's get the easy stuff out of the way. The umbrella is attractive. It gets attention, especially depending on how you hold it. If you hold it like the CGI chick from Animatrix, or like Morpheus from Matrix Reloaded, then people will definitely be convinced until you show them it's an umbrella. The handle will fool them. TSA will question you - they might even pat you down.

The problem...which is major...is the construction quality. It's not durable for the long term. There are many reasons I say that - first, water will soak through the umbrella fabric, which is to be expected on cheaper unbrellas that you'd get from Rite-Aid, but not one that costs this much. To put it into perspective, I live in San Diego...the place that gets rain MAYBE three times a year. Yet, during this last major rainstorm, even before I had gotten really wet, I noticed spots inside the umbrella. Not good. And no, I open it in a shielded area first before walking out, so it was not exposed at any time to the rain.

Also, the shaft is almost like a bamboo-like material, not metal or aluminum like it really should be. AS a result the hooking mechanism, given the size of the umbrella, will eventually bore through and crack the two holes, causing issues like where the umbrella will not stay closed (because the hook near the handle is low), or if it does, is extremely difficult to get open (because the hook further up has bored outward). It's a poorly designed system made worse by a shaft material not designed for the long term.

Does it work? Yes. But I was disappointed for the price paid. Now maybe they've fixed and improved it, but I simply was not impressed.

I really love the idea behind this umbrella, it's so elegant and cool. I like it so much that I bought one for myself, and then I bought one for my brother.
Mine arrived in good shaped, worked well, LOVED IT.
My brother's arrived, broken. The hilt guard was shattered, so I had him return it, and I ordered him another one. This one arrived ok, he LOVES IT.
A couple days ago, the hilt guard on mine, cracked and half of it fell off. Now there's a sharp edge where you don't want sharp edges, and it looks crappy because it's broken. Exactly the way my brother's was broken.
The difference is that it took over a month for mine to break, but broke is broke.
I hope his second one last longer than mine did.
I would love to recommend this item, but I can't. It's a cheaply made novelty item that's not going to last, and that's a shame. How much would it have costed to have a plain metal disk for a guard? They went with the cheapest possible plastic and it ruins a great idea.
