Complex accounts of Warring States era Japan, purely Japanese dialogue, combinations of strategy and action games... to longtime fans of the franchise, this seems like a given for a new version of Samurai Warriors. But to most, all of the above may be a massive turn-off compared to other, more accessible launch titles. Nintendo was wise to include this in it's starting line-up, because it not only shows that they care about giving hardcore gamers a great system, but games they want to play as well.

Story: B

You're a custom character, either male or female. You choose your name, you're given your weapon, and then unleashed in the Warring States era. There's really nothing to the plot here, and it mainly just serves the purpose of taking you from battle to battle. Odds are that you're going to remember battling more fondly than WHY you were even battling in the first place.

Gameplay: B+

If you've played an entry in this series, you know the drill. For the uninitiated, here's a brief overview: as a soldier with an unrealistic amount of power, you're thrown in the middle of a vast expanse of enemies. As the game progresses, more enemies are there for you to deal with solo, meaning that you will eventually be slaying 80-90 enemies at a time with nobody to protect you. This is made easy by the fact that your sword/crossbow/spear can be powered up to ridiculous heights, becoming imbued with the powers of Ice, Wind, and Fire. In order to get these powers, you must grind levels, RPG-style, by slaying stronger enemies. While this is going on, the player is attempting to capture an entire map from an enemy and eradicate any opposition. Think fast-paced action spliced with RPG elements and strategy board games, and you're halfway there.

If you are a fan of Dynasty Warriors and previous Samurai Warriors games, you will love this game. I personally have been a fan of Dynasty Warriors, owning Dynasty Warriors 4, 5, 6 and Dynasty Warriors 7, which just came out a few days ago.

First thing I noticed was that the screenshots posted of this game makes the graphics look bad, honestly, I'm starting to accept that most DS screenshots may represent the game unfavorably. The graphics are very well made, a big step up from what the previous DS handhelds produced. The cinematics in the game are compared to those of the PSP, my cousin said it compares to the PS3 and 360, but he might have just went a bit too far. =P

In the game, you create a character, male or female. By answering a few questions, the game determines what personality your character has. Your character fights along leaders and army of various kingdoms or parties, gaining experiences and trying to piece together his/her own vision of his/her's world.

You can switch between four characters, including your own, in each battle. This provides many strategies when attempting to complete missions that pop up during battle, one for example may be that there's an enemy general rushing to enter your main base through it's vulnerable back door, kill him under 3 minutes, with your life above half way, and before he enter's the camp. Now you are able to switch between a powerful character or the closest character, etc.

Each battle can last about half hour, but each gives you a time limit of one hour, and as you complete each battle, the missions become much difficult, providing more game time.

Addition details before I wrap it up: You can upgrade your character and the other switchable characters', weapons, equipped items, increase friendships for bonus missions, and more.

I love playing this game, its very fun, it's what I expected, but *its not for everyone.*

I purchased Samurai Warriors as one of my first 3DS titles. As a fan of the Warriors series, I knew that Koei would do a decent job with the title.

The graphics are probably the best of all the launch titles. The draw distance is pretty amazing in comparison to Warriors titles on PSP. There's virtually no "fog" and a lot less pop-in. The officer detail is outstanding in comparison to other 3DS games (it's probably at the level of the Gamecube or better). There's a ton of detail on the story characters. the actual level textures are a little disappoint, but still decent. It's probably has more to do with the 2GB data limit on the 3DS cartridges than anything else (size will increase in the future though). The 3D in Samurai Warriors is possibly the best I have seen on the 3DS (though I haven't played Pilotwings yet). Everything has a great sense of depth. Things in the background look far away and things in the foreground look up close. It's nothing mind blowing, but it looks really great and is helpful in battle.

Gameplay wise, it's also pretty solid. If you hate the Warriors games, then you aren't going to magically like this one. If you like the Warriors games though, this title is exceptional. You play as either a male or female hero. A quiz at the beginning of the game determines your hero's hidden traits. The story follows your hero as they learn from and make friendships with the characters from the previous Samurai Warriors games. As you progress you unlock more weapons, level up, etc. You can eventually customize your battle party, as well as customize your character's clothing.

Battle wise I feel like the game has made some major improvements. You can have up to 4 playable officers on the map, and you can switch to them by tapping their portrait.
