5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Experience November 21, 2014
By Nick
Edition:Samus|Verified Purchase
NOTE: This review is in regards to amiibo interaction with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

I can't say Nintendo is the first to implement collectible figures that interact with games. In fact, they are kind of late to the game. What I can say is that the quality and value you expect from Nintendo games carries over into these figures and, regardless of your age, they will make your gaming experience even more enjoyable.

To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about the concept. If something like amiibo came out when I was a child during the N64 era I would have been obsessed with it. However, things like this just don't appeal to me as much as an adult. I've never given as much as a thought to Skylanders or Disney Infinity. But, in typical Nintendo fashion, nostalgia pulled me in and made me give it a chance.

If you've ever played Super Smash Bros. Melee, you'll notice that these figures bear a striking resemblance to the trophies you were awarded during gameplay. I put countless hours in Melee during the GameCube days and still pick it up every now and then. I figured: even if I don't enjoy using amiibo, it would be a nice memory from my childhood to hold onto. As it turns out, I don't think I'll be able to put it down.

Gaming with amiibo is kind of like gaming with a friend. I say "kind of" because you don't get the usual banter you share with a friend as you smash them into the stratosphere. (Nintendo marketing team: please make a line of sassy talking amiibo) What you do get is a partner to battle with and against that grows with you and develops a unique personality. If I trained with another amiibo, I'm certain the experience would be different.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun way to enhance your game (without being REQUIRED.) November 25, 2014
Edition:Samus|Verified Purchase
Given that these figures have at least two purposes, I'll strive to address both of those in this review.

First off, as a figure itself- Samus is probably my favorite that they've released so far. Mine looks crisp, clean, and exactly like you would expect a suit of cybernetic armor to look like when shrunk to miniature. There's no articulation, but for the price of these figures I don't know why you would expect it to do much moving. All in all, figure alone is worth the price paid.

Now, for the NFC portion- right now its uses are fairly limited, given that so few games are compatible with Amiibo. Because of this, I'll only be focusing on Smash Bros. Within that particular game, these are quite fun- it's essentially an NPC you can bring with you into Smash matches. You can change the costume, level it up through fights, and feed it items to boost its base stats. It learns and adapts to fight beside (or against) you, and it does this very, very well. However, you cannot "play as" your amiibo or use it in non-smash modes, likely since it would greatly unbalance the single player experience. While disappointing, it's understandable as this is supposed to be a game based on skill, not "how many items do I have to eat until I'm unbeatable?"

So, in summation- this isn't Skylanders or Disney Infinity. You're not going to use Samus to unlock things, but Amiibo can and WILL enhance your experience and bring more to the game than has ever been present in Smash before.

My samus came with a slight deformity. Her head is tilted into one shoulder. Besides that the Amiibo works perfectly as it should. I would still be proud to keep this on my shelf. I would suggest buying it in a real store, however, as you can check for defects before buying.

Fun extracurricular activity - adds replay value to games. Not required for game-play, nor does it provide any advantage in online pvp. Cool figure too!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my personal favorite of the Amiibo's in wave 1 November 24, 2014
Edition:Samus
This is my personal favorite of the Amiibo's in wave 1. It captures Samus Aran rather well and the quality is great for what you're paying for. She makes an excellent sparring partner too, I loved leveling her up to 50.
