sir doug's early roots,

This review is from: San Antonio Rock: The Harlem Recordings, 1957-1961 (Audio CD)
this is a great little package of doug sahm goodies from his late teen years (1957-61) of his various san antonio combos---after his child prodigy Little Doug steel guitar years and before the fame of his Sir Douglas Quintet (she's about a mover) era (not to mention the later success of the Texas Tornadoes), doug sahm led a number of racially fused san antonio R & B based horn bands with releases on a number of local labels---this package focuses on those recorded for E.J. Henke and feature doug's R & B/shuffle/blues/doo wop amalgamation of sounds with horns and piano triplets that he would return to frequently over his long career as the living embodiement of texas music---some unissued cuts and some as a bandmember for other san antonio notables, but most are classic cuts from singles that would cost hundreds of dollars if you could even find a decent copy anymore---the great folkks at Norton have done their usual stellar job of packaging with great liner notes and precious photos---this is the real deal---doug sahm (R.I.P.) was a texas original in mind, body and music who left a recorded lineage of massive quantity and variety---this shows where it all came from---if there is any doubt in your mind, just go ahead and buy it---you will not be disappointed...

When Sir Doug passed away recently we lost a true original.I started collecting his music in the late 60's.He sang country and blues,I have an album where he covers a Miles Davis tune. This cd covers a lot of things he made for the Harlem label, the sound is much better than the records I have and the band is very tight, let's hope more of his music is released in the near future.
