Book Description

June 1, 2000
San Francisco is one of the most exciting cities in the world! It's also a complex place, with enough activities to last most visitors a lifetime. How do you choose from hundreds of restaurants, parks, museums, and unique landmarks, such as "the Crookedest Street in the world," and once you've made up your mind on where to go, you need to figure out how to best get there. This book was created to help you get the most out of your visit.

With concise descriptions that reflect the many faces of San Francisco, the six authors help you plan your visit. Because they are long-term residents, with an average of ten years in San Francisco, they not only cover the well-known spots like Fisherman's Wharf, but also introduce you to a San Francisco which most tourists never see, with listing like "Neighborhoods," "Parks/Gardens," "Late Night Eats," and for the really adventurous, "Tattoos/Piercings!"

The authors list "10 Things for Kids", "10 Places for Seniors," "10 Places to Avoid," which tells you where NOT to go in the City, and "10 Helpful Hints," with tips on how to deal with everything from Earthquakes to "Critical Mass" (which has nothing to do with atomic fission!), as well as the best type of clothing to wear (keyword: Fog!), what those beautiful Rainbow Flags mean, and where to find an all-night pharmacy/convenience store. Almost every listing includes a Web Site. The San Francisco Address Book is definitely a visitor-friendly, insider's guide to that spot where Tony Bennett and millions of other residents and visitors have left their hearts!

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I was inspired to write this book when I noticed how wordy most travel guides are. The San Francisco Address Book was written for those travelers who would rather experience the city rather than read about it.

The concept of the "address book" is to instill an image of a book with all the relevant information that one needs in a brief format. Where to go, how to get there, what it costs and contact information are all given. Not only have my friends and I given brief descriptions, but we chose diverse places that are limited to the top 10 or top 5, depending on categories. (Restaurants are the exception with 50 choices.)

We feel that the visitor who uses this book will use their time wisely while in San Francisco, because they will be making all the right choices without spending a lot of time reading about it. If, on the other hand, you want more information, most of the entries have web links to the venue's home page so that further research can be made.

I think you will also appreciate the Zone Map and Reference Pages which will help orient you and keep your stay worry free. If you are coming to San Francisco, you should consider this easy to use book.

About the Author

John K. Briscoe was born in upstate New York. At fifteen, he attended a multi-cultural boarding school, where many students were from different backgrounds and countries. This experience taught him a "love of diversity", which in turn, he relates, "inspired this book." Mr. Briscoe's love of travel and new, fascinating places eventually led him across the US to discover the town that Herb Caen dubbed "Baghdad by the Bay." The colorful and varied experience that is San Francisco inspired him, with the help of his friends and co-authors, to write and publish his first book.

The author obtained a B.A. in Philosophy from Brown Univeristy, but used his math background to work in the financial industry. He was recently sent on assignment to London for six months, but he returned to California to live and work. He has now left his previous job to devote his time first to writing and now to promoting his book. Mr. Briscoe's interests include travel, and foreign and independent films. He attends the San Francisco International Film Festival every year. The author also enjoys touring his favorite city. In his own words, "I love the diversity of San Francisco most and try to see as many sides of the city as possible."
