San Francisco Bay Coffee French Roast

We take a blend of fine 100% Arabica coffees from Central and South America, and roast it dark, until the flavor oils rise to surface of the bean. A coffee with an intense, bold, and smoky flavor. ..not for the faint of heart!

Do you take your coffee black...or green?

K-cup brewing systems – so convenient, but so wasteful. All that plastic going into a landfill – over 10 billion cups a year – enough to circle the earth thirteen times. We decided that we had to be more environmentally responsible. So, to begin with, we developed a pod that used 35% less plastic. Then, we began developing biodegradable components. We have been working for years on this – and are 97% there. Currently the OneCup packaging and the coffee are all 100% biodegradable. The lid and the mesh filter, are the only components not biodegradable – and we are working on that! All combined, the OneCup is 97% biodegradable. Now you can enjoy single serve coffees with a better conscience.

A truly superior coffee

Great coffee has to start with great coffee beans. Now, everyone says this, but it is really true with us. We source only the very best quality Arabica coffee beans, grown high in the mountains and hand-picked for perfect ripeness. We are very, very picky (pardon the pun) – we have the most demanding standards in the business. When we have found the best beans, we then we roast them to perfection – to their fullest flavor point – using our proprietary and top-secret roasting system. Then, we grind them for optimum flavor, just before packaging into our revolutionary OneCup single serve pods. And finally, our stringent Quality Assurance procedures ensure that the coffee you receive is as consistent as it is excellent. One of our criteria for the OneCup was simple - that it had to taste better than the other single-serve pods out there. Our OneCup filter is designed specially to ensure you will experience the maximum flavor extraction from each cup you brew.

What about the coffee farmers?

To many coffee roasters, green bean procurement means a phone call to a broker in New York. But by going straight to source, we are able find better coffee – while at the same time, changing lives for the better. You see, coffee farming is like betting your life savings on something, without knowing the odds, the outcome, or the payback. If there is a glut, prices will crash, and you could be out of business. There could be a storm at the wrong moment, which knocks all of the flowers off of the trees or buries the farm in mud. Or a fungus could wipe out your trees – and your livelihood – for years to come. Our farmers are like family to us, and we want them to do well. We guarantee our farmers a profit – and a comfortable life. We also help them with improved farming methods, environmentally responsible practices, crop yield increases, and producing better coffee. But suppose we had a great idea for a farmer to try – and it didn’t work out, and hurt his crop? Not good. So, we try our ideas out on our own farms. We have over 3,000 acres from where we try to develop better tasting coffee. We also try other ideas which can lead to increased yields, more natural production methods, and more consistent, higher quality milling and processing methods.

Grown for good

Your purchase is touching the lives of, literally, hundreds of thousands of people in the farming communities around the world. Our Grown for good Programs have built thousands of housing units, and dozens of schools, kitchens, medical / dental facilities, water treatment plants, etc. We have educational programs, hot meal programs, sports and recreational programs, adult education programs, nutrition programs, environmental responsibility programs. And because of all these improvements in education, housing, health, and sanitary conditions, every person, at every farm we work with, enjoys an improved quality of life.

Who is behind it all?

Founded more than 34 years ago, the Rogers Family Company is comprised of Jon and Barbara Rogers, their three sons, their daughter, and two daughters-in-law, along with over 250 employees. Many of our employees have been with us for 10, 20, even 30 years and more, and some even have sons and daughters here now! Our approach to farming, milling, roasting, packaging and selling coffee is different than any other company. Our goals are simple: Produce the best coffee possible. Offer it at a reasonable price. Improve the lives of all of those around us. And be respective of our environment. To us, our employees, our farmers, and our customers are all family. And we treat them as such.

I just received these 'k-cups' a few days ago. I ordered them on subscribe and save because of the value. I failed to read all reviews, just a few to make sure they were good. When I opened the package, I thought I was sent a wrong item...until I realized these are k-cups, but not the usual looking ones. They are foil sealed with a plastic ring around the top, and the rest of it is a filter. When placed in the brewer, just a hole gets punched on the top, not bottom. Something new perhaps? I tried a cup and I admit, it was very good coffee, full flavor. I will purchase these again and do recommend them. These do arrive in a shipping box, but the k-cups are sealed in plastic bags.

With the recent price hikes for K-Cups, I was starting to question the value of using my Keurig anymore. I saw the San Francisco Bay Coffee OneCups on Amazon and was intrigued by the price and the unusual design. I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the coffee. The only downside I have experienced so far is that the pods do need to be stored in a zip-lock baggie since they are not airtight.

Full disclosure - I worked briefly for the people who make this product back in the late '70s. Since I had a personal connection to the product, I really wanted to like it. And it's not bad - it's OK, but it's just a bit odd.

First off, the packaging. These aren't your father's K-Cup, where it's an actual cup. These have a top like the traditional cup (so they'll fit in the brewer) but the bottom is completely different. It's almost more like a filter than a cup, and kinda rounded rather than cup-shaped. They come in sealed plastic bags of twelve, so you need to keep them in a ziplock bag or some kind of airtight container once you open the bag, unless you're planning on using them all right away.

Second, the flavor. It's OK, not bad at all, but it just tastes a little off for some reason. A hint of odd flavor. Also, it seems to lack body, for want of a better term. It doesn't have that rich, full, satisfying flavor I expect from a good cup of French Roast.

Lastly, it seems to leave more sediment in the bottom of the cup than traditional K-Cups - not sure if that's a by-product of the design or what.

Bottom line - it's not like I'm going to throw them away. I'll keep them and drink them, but I probably won't buy them again. I much prefer the flavor of just about any regular K-Cup to these, even non-premium brands like Folger's.

UPDATE: After drinking my way through the whole case and comparing them with other K-Cup products, I have a bit more appreciation for these and might consider buying them again, particularly given the excellent price of around 38 cents a cup if you use Subscribe and Save.

A truly tasty French roast and I love the the packaging--feels more like brewing coffee, allows savory aroma to waft. Packs a caffeine punch yet delicious flavor. Will buy again.

I like strong coffee. I should get that out of the way first, because I know not everyone appreciates deep, dark coffees. Aside from Dark Magic and Mahogany, this is better than almost every k-cup I have tasted.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually prefer the filter-like bottom of these pods over the k-cup for four reasons:

1. I've noticed no difference in freshness compared to the Nitrogen-filled, sealed k-cup.

2. I don't have to waste filtered water and keep a paper clip handy to unclog the coffee grounds that get stuck in the needle of the Keurig because of pressure and temperature differences between where the k-cup was sealed and where it gets punctured.

3. When brewing with these One Cups, the kitchen smells of freshly brewed coffee, an aroma I had missed when using k-cups.

4. (And I realize not everyone will feel this way) - warning, nothing but complaining ahead:

I had begun resenting being beholden to Keurig. I dutifully sent them money each month for k-cups and each month they found new ways to make me regret it. (Not shipping the k-cups out at all, allowing my package to sit in their warehouse for a week while they assured me it was on its way, consistently being out of stock of the k-cups I wanted and most of all, whenever I called or wrote to point out a problem, issuing a coupon code for free k-cups but then repeating the problem the following month. Their customer service dept is structured in a way that they repeat problems and never resolve anything.)

I've been a San Francisco Bay coffee fan for years, and was delighted to learn of their one-cups. The flavor is great and the pods are eco-friendly. I like my coffee strong and have found the French Roast to be just right. Don't know what a reviewer meant by "weak and watery." Not so! I like the price too.

I have tried each of these New K-cup like items from San Francisco Bay. This one is darker than the Rainforest blend but not as dark as the Fog Chaser (my personal favorite).

Great coffee...great alternative!
