San Francisco Map & Guide Pocket-Pilot

This is a sturdy, compact, fairly easy-to-read map. The big flaw is that the map only covers the northeast 1/4 of the city. Most of the popular tourist attractions are in this area, but many are not. Most of Golden Gate Park is missing. The Legion of Honor, zoo, Stern Grove, all of the ocean beaches, and all of the southern neighborhoods are also missing. Also, the product description says that public transit routes are on the map, but that is only partially true. The cable car and light rail routes are shown, but the more versatile bus routes are missing. The competiting Streetwise San Francisco map fixes most of these problems, though the thicker paper means that it does not fold up into such a small package. Also the slightly smaller scale is a little harder to read.

It's laminated so it lasts, and it folds down small enough to fit in my purse. What else could I ask for? Well, it would be great if it included some of the southern neighborhoods, like the Castro. But for tourist purposes it's fine.

I've used these Pocket Pilot maps for years for different cities throughout the world and try to get one for every city I visit. They work great. They fold down small enough to easily pack in your pocket but still have enough detail to get you around to most addresses. They also list major hotels, major shopping centers, churches and other points of interest which is very helpful as a tourist if you're staying in a larger hotel. They also have a subway map of the city and the subway stops and which lines are served are clearly shown on the city map plus a close approximation of where the entrance/exits are for the subways. They're very durable don't get destroyed by being stuffed into your pockets.
