First Sentence:
Whereas the Spanish outpost once known as Yerba Buena was obliquely discovered and almost exclusively supplied by way of the ocean; whereas Captain John B. Montgomery came to lower one flag and raise another by way of the sea; whereas the majority of gold-hungry hordes floated into the bay-again, by way of the Pacific; and whereas the wind and the fog that define (one might even suggest "defy") our summers, as well as the temperatures that rarely rise above 80 degrees or sink below 50, as well as all of our shipping, so many of our cultures, and even so much of our solitude are brought to us by way of the big flat wet thing to the west, we have chosen, at least structurally, to turn our back on it. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars San Francisco: Points of View, July 17, 2004
By A Customer
From a sleepy outpost to a bustling gateway city, San Francisco has grown in less than 150 years to become one of the most important commercial and cultural centers in the world. This splendid photographic tribute to America's favorite city explores the grand and familiar icons of San Francisco as well as the intimate details that distinguish it so dramatically from the other cosmopolitan cities of the world.

In 103 beautifully executed images, photographer David Wakely captures the heart and mind of a city that possesses the charm and accessibility of a small town. Here are the neighborhoods, the glitering skyscrapers, the cozy cafes and worldclass restaurants, the stunning vistas and parks - all enchantingly presented through the lens of a talented and accomplished photographer. Delight in the well-known Golden Gate Bridge, the Coit Tower, Chinatown, and Union Square as well as the city's newest urban wonders, the museum of Modern Art, the Yerba Buena Center, and the renovated Embarcadero.

Complementing the superb photographs by David Wakely are essays by Dan Harder, which reflect this incomparable city's past and present with insight, intelligance, and love.

Together, photographer David Wakely and author Dan Harder present their points of view of their favorite city, San Francisco.
