Nice Collection OF Scott McKenzie Songs!, July 17, 2002
This review is from: San Francisco (Audio CD)
Everyone is quite familiar with singer and songwriter Scott MacKenzie based on his single smash hit with the emblematic "San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair). Yet this talented and versatile singer and songwriter is much more than a one-hit wonder, and this collection of his recordings over a decade or so reflect that fact very well. He started his recording career as a member of the Smoothies, and worked his way into the khaki and button-down shirt folk work of the Journeyman, where, along with future Mamas and Papas founder John Phillips, he showed just how talented he was.
Yet it was as a solo performer that he attempted to make his mark, and while he flirted briefly with superstardom based on the overwhelming overnight success of "San Francisco" (written, incidentally, for him by friend John Phillips), MacKenzie was turned off by the reaction that his success brought him. Like Don MacLean experienced with the phenomenal success of "American Pie" a decade later, Scott hastily retreated from commercial success, and did some of his best work away from the glare popular venues.
The covers provided on this album on other artists' work shows how versatile he was, and his own songs, such as "What's The Difference?" illustrate how thoughtful, articulate, and forceful a songwriter he could be. Finally, his later work, as in the "Stained Glass Morning" album proved that Scott MacKenzie was a talented, versatile, and gifted artist who deserves to be heard and appreciated on a much larger stage than he ever has been. This CD offers the listener with an opportunity to become more familiar with the range of his work, and I recommend it to anyone interested. Enjoy!

a great 60's time capsule, January 8, 2003
This review is from: San Francisco (Audio CD)
This cd is mis-named. It is,track for track, the album released on Lou Adler's Ode label in 1967 titled "The Voice Of Scott McKenzie". That having been said-for all of us who love Scott's voice and wonder what kind of cliff he fell off in 1970 this is a marvelous find. The album has of course been long out of print on vinyl and for fans who have played theirs until there's no sound left this is a great find. Marketed by Sony and imported from Germany this cd will call forth a rush of memories for those of us who lived through the original summer of love in '67. Rumor has it that the album was throwntogether to support the single "San Francisco..flowers..etc." It not only contains that unforgetable worldwide smash it contains some wonderful songs such as "Like An Old Time Movie" (also written by the late John Philips), "Celeste" ( by Donovan), and "What's The Difference Chapters I & II (McKenzie compositions). This music is reprensetative of a less complicated, more folk based era in which an entire generation was united to stop a senseless war. Maybe it's time has come again. Just a thought. For McKenzie lovers this cd is a must. Also, Raven Records out of Australia has release a fairly inclusive McKenzie anthology combining his early work with The Smoothies and The Journeymen with his two albums from '67 and '70, "Voice.." and "Stained Glass Morning. The Raven anthology is well worth the price but beware.. several songs from "Voice" are deleated for some reason from the anthology. Oh, what the heck, get 'em both and, sadly, you'll have all of McKenzie's work in one hand. He is a wonderful singer and if you've read this far you're a fan so I need not say more. I have both albums on vinly and cd and I enjoy them very much.
