4.0 out of 5 stars awesome little mp3 player - and wifi w/ yahoo music works
I picked up one of these players about 2 months ago - great player so far - good battery life, big screen, good sound quality even with the included headphones, and 4 GB of storage built in. Also it has a built-in speaker to use without headphones and the quality is suprisingly decent.

Don't pay $100+ for the WIFI-enabled version of this player - you can...

HI there,
I love my connect. Have had it for years.. the sound quality is great and I really have no complaints about the hardware itself. Buttons are intuitive and the expandability makes it do everything I need it to.

I picked up one of these players about 2 months ago - great player so far - good battery life, big screen, good sound quality even with the included headphones, and 4 GB of storage built in. Also it has a built-in speaker to use without headphones and the quality is suprisingly decent.

Don't pay $100+ for the WIFI-enabled version of this player - you can download a firmware update to enable WIFI on this player for free (just google for sansa connect wifi firmware or similar). The update also enables photo and video support. I read that the update *may* also enable microSDHC support up to 8 or 16 GB, but I have not tested that yet. Out of the box the player supports regular microSD up to 2 GB.

Once I flashed my player and enabled the WIFI, I put in my router info (w/ WEP key) and it hooked up seamlessly. You need a free Yahoo account to use the WIFI music features of this player. I can use it to listen to Yahoo! internet radio stations throughout my house, and it offers an easy-to-use menu to select which station you listen to. It won't purchase or download songs over the WIFI - as stated in another review, that part of the service is discontinued. It also works to display photos from flickr. I have not tested videos on the device, and you will need to download and use the converter from [...] to format videos for it.

One neat thing is that the player is fully functional when you are syncing music from a PC. It will still play MP3's or WIFI yahoo music and is fully responsive. Most players are not usable while syncing music so that is an added bonus.

Most Sansa mp3 players can function like a USB drive, but this one unfortunately does not. It shows up as a MTC device and you have to sync to it with Windows Media Player or MediaMonkey or similar (not sure about iTunes). It works decently under Windows XP - have not tested Vista. However, I had trouble with the device under Windows Media Player 11 on my laptop and had to downgrade to WMP 10 for it to sync properly. Another downside to the player is the creation of playlists - they must be created and sent to the player using WMP 11. I have not tried MediaMonkey to see if it handles syncing playlists to the player or not.

Overall, despite some quirks, this is a steal in my book - 4 GB player with WIFI Yahoo music support for $30. I wish it had wireless music syncing like the Zune's, but they cost tons more than this player.

CONS: this sansa is discontinued. The software was tied to yahoo music services and once they stopped yahoo you lose half of the feaatures you paid for.. including the wifi being a joke at that point. you cant connect wirelessly to your pc, you only could connect to the internet to download music from rhapsody. great idea.. but now gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great package, awesome price, May 27, 2009
This review is from: SanDisk Sansa Connect 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Digital Media Player Multimedia (Electronics)
As a tech guy who is the father of five teenagers, I have just a little experience with this genre of personal tech equipment... picked up this winner for $40 and my mid-teen son loves it... to us it seems better than other products purchased in the last 12 months (realistic time-frame for comparing based on cost/features of these players) that have cost several times more.

As is typical, the included headphones are ideal for casual / non-music (audio books, podcast news programs, etc.) listening, so if you are planning to listen to music or watch programming where sound matters, then I'd recommend you pick up some $20-$40 head phones to match the quality of this player.

This little device handles everything. Play music, videos, etc. Excellent quality. I've had mine for more than a year. Connects to WiFi (you need to download the firmware). Listen to internet radio and more. I added a 4gb MicroSD card. The coolest of them all is; I converted 3 of my DVD's and copied them to the player so now I can watch 3 full length movies.

After you order yours, find the Sansa Connect Forum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refurbished and with no Wifi, October 6, 2009
This review is from: SanDisk Sansa Connect 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Digital Media Player Multimedia (Electronics)
Hi, I just wanted to point out that this one offered on Amazon is a refurbished unit and doesn't not come with Wifi at all. I think they're also selling similar refurbished units on Overstock. This is just FYI.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the price the connect is now, This can't be beat, January 24, 2010

where to start... the wifi function can be reinstated with a firmware upgrade/downgrade (im not sure which but its easy and the instructions are all over google).. but the yahoo radio isnt worth it in my opinion. it is a novel feature though.... you can also get video on it with the firmware change.

the controls and user interface are well designed, the circle spins to change menu choices, and if you push it there are 4 buttons on the usual sides of the circle (top is home or menu, bottom is pause/play, left and right are just that or ff rw ect...), it is pretty easy to use. you can get all the menu options anywhere by pressing up. there is a dedicated volume on the upper left side. power switch on top, touch it once for sleep mode, hold it for power off. it works well.

the sound quality is very good, it has an excellent flat eq and the other eq options actually cut the frequencies instead of boosting them. this works out to a clean powerful sound without distortion with all the eq's. i was kinda bummed at first that there was no custom eq, but the pre installed ones are good enough that it doesnt bother me anymore.

the included earbuds are actually pretty decent, but replacing them with higher quality earbuds bumps up the sound quality tremendously.(im really picky about sound quality too) I listen to all kinds of music, most everything sounds good on this.

the video quality is pretty decent, not the greatest, but probably better than you expect it to be.

battery life is nothing to write home about, its not horrible, but its not great

the screen, at its highest setting, is very bright, you can adjust it from 5% to 100% by 5% increments.

it has a micro sd card slot which with firmware changes can support up to 12 gb, ive heard rumors of 16, im sure that will happen eventually. micro sd isnt that expensive so you can bump up the storage on this pretty cheaply. It comes with 4 gigs, with the possibility of up to 16 or 20 gigs.

it has a built in speaker which is LOUD. really LOUD. the speaker is awesome.

the player itself is kinda big, about 2/3 the size of a pack smokes (shorts not 100's)..

all in all considering that you can get one of these things for 30 to 40 dollars, this is a great alternative to the other players in this price range. it originally cost $249...

the sansa connect is amazingly good if you consider its current price range.
so if your looking at a clip or another player in the 30 to 45 dollar price range consider the connect.
decent video, wi fi yahoo radio, good sound quality, ok battery, micro sd card slot expandable to 16 gigs (at least)...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great No Frills MP3 Player For The Money, April 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SanDisk Sansa Connect 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Digital Media Player Multimedia (Electronics)
This is truly a great no frills MP3 for the money. My 7 year old daughter really likes the screen so she can read the name of the song and artist. The sound is great with headphones, but only so, so with the built in speaker. The other thing I really like is the expandability of the 4 GB memory with the micro SDHC memory card slot. I added 4 GB micro SDHC memory card with music and it worked perfectly. It would have been ideal with a FM tuner and a better speaker, but then I probably wouldn't have been able to buy it for just over $30.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME, March 16, 2010

We ordered this product for our 10 year old. We got it refurbished for $27.99. We have a V-mate recorder (a machine that records movies or TV shows on a SD card) making it very easy to transfer anything she wants to watch on to this little machine! Great combo, so great the next week we ordered one for our 17 year old son. He wanted on Ipod touch but quickly settled for this much cheaper machine and seems very pleased as well. WOuld purchase again. Note: V-mate I believe is also made by Sansa and you can purchase that for under $30. Worth every penny!!!! We can fit about 20 movies on an 8gb micro sd card.
