FAQ

1. How can I free up memory space on my iPhone or Android phone using this product?

Many smartphone users take lots of photos and videos on their phones and often run out of memory. SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive solves this problem by allowing the user to offload these photos and videos from their phone to the drive wirelessly using the free Wireless Media Drive mobile app. The app allows you to view photos and videos from your camera roll or gallery and upload them directly to the drive, wirelessly. You don't have to look for a computer or cable to connect and transfer. You don't even need an internet connection to offload and to free up space on your phone.

2. Can I stream purchased movies from iTunes?

Yes, you can. Simply drag and drop the movie file from your computer to the drive. Then, launch the app on your iPhone or iPad, click on videos and start streaming right away. Note: In order to watch content purchased from iTunes, the same iTunes account that you used for the purchase must also be synched to the device that you are using to watch it. Please note that not all content can be streamed due to digital rights management protection. Always check with the content provider for playback restrictions.

3. Can I stream music purchased from iTunes or Amazon from the drive?

Yes, you can. The Wireless Media Drive supports music files purchased from iTunes (DRM free) or Amazon. Drag and drop the music files from your computer to the drive. Then, launch the app and go to the Music category. The app automatically categorizes your music by artist, album, genre, songs etc. You can even create and manage your own playlist. Please note that not all content can be streamed due to digital rights management protection. Always check with the content provider for playback restrictions.

4. Can I access photos from the SD card on my DSLR camera and post it instantly on Facebook?

Yes you can. One of the unique features of the Wireless Media Drive is the SD card slot that allows you to pop-in an SD card from your DSLR camera and view or share those high-res pictures instantly. Once the SD card is popped in, launch the app and view photos and videos from the SD card instantly. If you are connected to the Internet, then you can select a photo and post it on Facebook immediately using the app - no need for a computer or camera cable.

5. Can I access the Drive wirelessly from my computer and transfer photos to it?

Yes, you can. You can access the Wireless Media Drive from your computer using one of the popular web browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari). Connect the drive's Wi Fi network from your computer and then type in mediadrive.sandisk.com from your favorite web browser. Now you can access, transfer, stream wirelessly from the drive on your computer.

6. What types of mobile devices are compatible with SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive?

SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive supports mobile devices running iOS version 6.0 or higher, or Android version 2.3 or higher. PC system requirements are: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Mac OS 10.5.x+, or later.

Glossary for this review:

Media Drive = this product

Flash Drive = Sandisk's other wireless flash storage option

You're probably wondering how this product compares to Sandisk's SanDisk Connect 32GB Wireless Flash Drive (SDWS2-032G-E57). To my surprise there is a distinct difference between these two products and the Flash Drive slightly edges out this one.

The reason is that the Media Drive app lacks the ability to copy many types of files from the iPad/iPhone/Android device to the Media Drive. For example, if I receive a PDF via email in the iOS mail application, I can toss that PDF to the Flash Drive's app and then copy it over to the device. The Media Drive doesn't recognize the file at all. Additionally, viewing PDF files on the Flash Drive app will have them open up in the app for immediate viewing. The Media Drive downloads the file and then instead prompts to have it open in another application.

I did find that the Media Drive app was much more intuitive for viewing and/or copying photos between devices. I also like how I can take an SD card out of my digital camera, place it in the Media Drive, and immediately stream video files and still photos to my mobile devices. Very slick. Photos also pop up immediately although the Media Drive app lacks the ability to view RAW files shot by my Nikon SLR.

It's currently not possible to copy files from the card to the Media Drive's internal storage, but Sandisk promises that functionality soon. That will be a great way to back up footage on the go.

The bottom line?

I've tried to come up with a way to take movies in the van for road trips for the longest time. 1) Built in DVD players = high maintenance and 4 out of 6 kids not liking what is playing. 2) bought some iPads and kindle fires. Don't want to pay through the nose for extra storage so they can only hold a few movies. Eventually the kids are all fighting for the one iPad that has the one high demand movie. So I tried to just put a router with a hard drive in there and never got it to work.

Finally, I happen upon this while looking at sandisk SD cards. I think....too good to be true. A mini router that can stream 5 movies at the same time and hold 64gb of data? Plus 64Gb more expansion? No way. I dove in to try.

Bottom line? Loaded up all 64GB with movies and put in another 64GB SD that it recognized no issue. Loaded the sandisk app on all the iPads, iPhones, and kindle fires. Jumped in the van and turned it on. Not one peep from 5/6 kids for the whole trip. (The 6th is only 1 though). Works like a charm. Period. Love it.

Battery lasts a long time too...5-6hrs maybe? I had it on for 3+ with 45% remaining. If needed, you can just plug it in though with microusb to car power.

I bought this drive for storage of JPG landscape photos on long road trips where cloud storage and computer access would not be available. The plan was first to put the photos on my iPad for editing, then upload them to the drive as a backup.

The Media Drive is a beautifully designed product, and it worked very well with both an iPad Air and iPhone 5C. The companion Sandisk iOS app makes it easy to browse photos on both devices, and uploading photos to the drive via its wireless connection is easy and relatively fast. When connected to my Mac with a USB cable, the drive appears on my desktop, making it easy to transfer and manage files.

There is only one (unchangeable) default destination folder on the drive for uploaded photos, but it also accepts an SD card, with its own default destination folder. The Sandisk app lets you choose whether photos go to the drive or the card. This makes it easy to use it as backup for both myself and my wife, without getting our photos mixed up. I had no problem using a 32GB SD card for this.

So far, so good. Unfortunately, it turns out that the drive automatically reduces each photo to 2048 pixels wide when they are uploaded to it. This may have been intended to maximize the number of photos the drive can store, but it does cause a loss of resolution and image quality. There is no way to turn off this compression.

Sandisk tech support confirms that this is a "known issue" and their development team is "working on it". Let's hope that a future firmware update will let the drive maintain the original file sizes and quality. As it stands, though, photographers should be aware of this issue when considering the product.

Disregard the rest of the review! I pulled this drive from the drawer once again and have been pleasantly surprised that most, if not all my objections have been addressed. I'm planning on taking it on a trip and making sure that it is as good as it appears. It is great to see a company that working to make their product right, and making updates available to the first buyers.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I bought this to backup Raw photo files to the device and then review them on the iPad. Unfortunately the photos cannot be directly moved from a SD card to the Sandisk Connect. They can only be moved from the card, through the Connect to the iPad, and then back to the device. A odd extra step. Also the photos have to be moved one at a time, it would be a lot nicer to move a whole folder at once.

Also despite normallly being able to view Sony and Nikon Raw photos on the iPad with a SD card adapter, the Connect treats them as invalid photo files and will not transfer them to the photo folder for viewing on the iPad (although they can be moved as a generic data file to the iPad and not viewable by the photo viewer app). I thought all file types the iPad could recognize were supposed to work with the Connect.

Hopefully an app software upgrade can address these items and then it will be exactly what I needed. Until then I'll have limited use for it. I can't imagine I'm the only person looking to use this device this way.

****Update 11/10/13 Still no change to the issues above since this summer. Also despite what the manufacturer states, Sony RX-1 raw files absolutely do not work with it despite being easily viewable when imported with the Apple Camera Connection kit.

Dear Redgreen,

Thank you for the interest in the SanDisk Wireless Flash drive. We would like to address a few of your concerns regarding the product.

The feature through which you can transfer files between the media drive's internal memory and SD card is currently in implementation and we are planning to update it in the device in the future releases. However we cannot promise you with a time frame when this feature would be available.

The media drive supports all types of files supported by the host device. Please refer to the link for more information on supported file types by various Host devices:

http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10534

The media drive would only support files natively supported by the host device. However the Host device may support additional files formats after installing additional apps or programs.

Thank you,
SanDisk Support.
