So to operate the unit requires opening, and pinching the black part (so your fingers prevent the red connector from retracting) as you insert it into the port.

I have had many, many USB drives and probably my favorite is a Cruzer Titanium. However, I need security for my files and the Titanium's U3 software does not work on my Win7 desktop or laptop (but is great on XP). Since Sandisk phased out U3, I thought I'd pick one of these up to try the new Sandisk Secure Access software and protection.

What I found is the software is slow to start up which is annoying. Then, actually putting files into the security "vault" is way too slow to be usable. I just put one 300 meg backup file in it and it took over 15 minutes. Granted that is a big file, but just adding a group of spreadsheets will evoke memories of copying files to floppy disks... So this drive is totally inappropriate for use as a secure backup drive unless you either have very few, small files, or you happen to have lots of time and patience. I don't.

As for other features, it is a very, very small plastic-y drive and sometimes it slips and doesn't insert all the way. Strike two, cheezy design. The small size is nice though.

Bottom line - if you want security, I'd look elsewhere. If you want a very small, light plastic drive and will not be protecting your files, it is an ok choice - just be really careful with it.

I purchased two 4-packs of these and ended up taking them back to the retailer. I used them both at work and home, but they would not work on my computer at work. I tried multiple ports (hub, tower and monitor) and most of the time they weren't even recognized. When they were recognized, they were read as empty. Which they weren't. I was able to access them on my home computer, but I took all the stuff off to be safe and returned for a refund. These are cute looking, but the design is flimsy and flawed. I had problems inserting into the port because it would retract, I had to hold the thumb spot to keep it extended to go into the port. I wouldn't trust these and certainly wouldn't trust 16gb worth of anything important.

Got this for my wife for xmas... a new, bigger, 'dorkstick' as she calls it ;-)

It worked fine, but considering I've never had a 'dorkstick' that failed with anything short of a hammer, that's not an important quality.

More important, the thing is cheaply built, solid plastic, and impossible to use easily. You slide the red part out and insert the drive into the port. Unfortunately it doesn't latch 'open' securely (though clearly there was some intent to make it so), so just trying to slide it into a port causes it to close up again! What frackin' idiot built this ought to be fired. So to operate the unit requires opening, and pinching the black part (so your fingers prevent the red connector from retracting) as you insert it into the port.

Way to fail with style guys.

So here's how I broke down the stars:
a) proper operation (when inserted) +1
b) good color scheme +1

For the record, my last 'dorkstick' (also by sandisk) is a 5 star unit. I'll let you guess why (SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Titanium USB Flash Drive (SDCZ7-2048-A10RB) )

I have an old Sandisc Cruzer that worked just fine -- you type in the password and it operates just like a non-encrypted USB memory stick. This one is horrible. It is incredibly slow, even to delete files. The software is unnecessarily complicated. I mean, what do I want to do with it? Store files, and that's it. And the software automatically displays an ad for a related online service that you can't get rid of (or anyway there's no obvious way to get rid of)and that takes up a good piece of your screen. How many more useless and inconvenient features could anybody invent for a USB flash drive? Do yourself a favor and don't buy this product.

I have used Sandisk USB drive since day 1 and found them to be satisfactory until now. The latest software "Secure Access" needs a serious overhaul. Yuu Waa is OO Noo. Worst interface ever. I can't use it to sync files, so it has to go through a laborious encrypt process. U3 works with Powerdesk Pro to sync files, this waste of programming is to be deleted. I will go elsewhere to secure files. This is useless!

Any drives using the Secure Access software will go down in history as the Edsel of flash drives. Wasted hours trying to make it function efficiently; finally gave up and am using an unprotected drive.

I needed a USB flash for casual data transfer and the law price of this product caught my eye (got it on another site for about the same price, before reading the reviews here).

Pros:
Good price
Hi capacity
Retraceable design, no cover to loose, well protected
Aesthetic (IMO).
Very light

Cons:
Feels cheap (made of thin plastic, though seems to be very strong)
No activity LED

I do not measure transfer speed and did not use any on the software the came with it. First thing I did was to reformat it.

Good storage capacity for the price. Secure Access software is useless - takes 15 to 20 minutes to load up every time it is connected. Bit flimsy but compact.
