4.0 out of 5 stars Very small .. slow only when writing a group of small files
I like the size. The speed on reading and writing is usually just fine, but when writing a group of small files it takes ages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the faster Cruzer Mini
The Micro is really tiny, but has trouble with file operations. Here are some specs comparing the speed of the two products. Tests were run on my T43p Thinkpad's USB 2.0 drive:

Copying 1 folder with 18 files (1.5 MB total)
Cruzer Mini: 7 seconds
Cruzer Micro: 20 seconds

Deleting this same folder
Mini: 1 second
Micro: 15...

2.0 out of 5 stars Small but very slow., April 3, 2006
This review is from: SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive (SDCZ4-2048-A11, Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I bought this flash drive after owning and loving a 1GB Cruzer micro for a few months. The 1GB drive goes with me everywhere and when I saw this on sale, I thought I would increase the capacity of the drive I carry around by purchasing this drive.

Although, the 2GB drive is the same physical size as the 1GB cruzer micro it performs nowhere near the same. I keep about 600MB of files on my 1GB Cruzer Micro and decided I was going to move it onto the 2GB Cruzer Micro. I copied the files onto my desktop and then copied onto the 2GB drive. It took 10 minutes to write the files onto the 2GB drive. I thought this was awefully slow as I know my 1GB drive doesn't write this slow.

I then wrote the files onto my 1GB drive and it only took 3 minutes and 30 seconds. This is when I knew something was wrong. I tested it a few more times and received the same result.

I also tested the drive with one large 350mb file and it wrote it in less than a minute. It seems that the drive can write and delete single files very quickly but does a very slow job at multiple files.

I subsequently returned the drive to Amazon.

Just when I said something really nice about SANDisk products they force me to say something not so nice. But SanDisk followed LEXAR's bad lead by creating the very same oh so lame soft sided plastic sleave for its 2GB drive.

Now do not get me wrong this is an awesome drive from a sheer work standpoint. This puppy will gobble up two gig's of data so fast it will make your hair stand straight up! This drive is just nowhere near as solid and strudy as those smaller older sandisk drives encased in that almost indestructably hard plastic.

This is a good drive for storing lots of data but be gentle with it because, it is delicate small and made almost as lame in construction as the Lexars. This drive is still far better than the lexar drives but SanDisk took a GAINT Leap backwards in strudy durable quality of its drives with this soft plastic case. For shame and how stupid to have a good product and make it so much more lame. Shows the SanDisk People are not thinking.

I am still glad I brought one of these buggers because if you treat them gently they eat up data and hold on to it like few others I have seen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better Not to Buy, May 17, 2006
This review is from: SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive (SDCZ4-2048-A11, Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I'm the consumer of SanDisk USB flash drives. I have used couple of sandisk flash drives (i.e. 512MB Mini, 256MB Mini) before I bought this product.

Performance wise this particular product is not doing good. It's taking long time to copy files from my computers. Even it's taking long time to delete files from this disk. So I returned to Amazon and looking for Mini products from SanDisk.

I doubt all the Micro products which is having capacity more than 512MB. Now I'm planning to buy 512MB or 1GB SanDisk Mini USB flash drive.

Better buy some good one than wasting your time on this product.

I wanted to replace a Lexar 1GB with this, but I'll keep looking. I used it to transfer a 700MB, 2300 file My Documents folder to a new PC. The transfer seemed pretty slow, but deleting those files from the Sandisk took *61* minutes! Back it goes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely stay away, June 28, 2006
This review is from: SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive (SDCZ4-2048-A11, Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
Bought this about two months ago. Never liked it for two reasons:
-The rubber cap is so easy to lose. (Guess that's why it comes with spares though.)
-Utterly slow! This is what was most uncomfortable with the drive. Yeah it's slow only with groups of small files like everyone else said. Still, it's annoying to have to zip a bunch of small files everytime before you copy them over to the drive. Then unzip when you want to use/copy them. Not practical.

And now, well, it just stopped working last week. I mean completely, for no reason. Just great. Like one day before I was going to sell it to someone else.

Stay away from this one.

Do NOT buy this product. It is incredibly slow, by far the slowest USB drive out of the dozen or so that I've used. It handles small numbers of large files rather well but it immediately chokes whenever faced with a large quantity of small files. I attempted to copy ~50MB (1500 files, 800 directories) to the disk and it took almost 30 minutes to complete the copy! That's roughly 27K/second. Deleting the files was painful as well, taking at least 15 minutes to delete everything. For kicks, I popped in an old 128 MB Kingston drive and was able to copy the same set of files to it in under 30 seconds and the delete took under 15 seconds. Bottom line is don't be fooled by the drive's small physical size, large capacity and price point: it simply doesn't perform.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for KeePass (password keeper), January 30, 2006

I love the size of this flash drive. It comes with a lanyard that is detatchable at the end (very handy). It also comes with 3 plastic covers that I wish would stay on. I have already lost two of the covers because they fall off while I am wearing it... and I'm not going to put the pink one on because it's a bit femmy for me. I noticed that without the cover on, the drive gets a bit warm to touch after being in a USB port for a little bit.

I use this product every day whether it be to listen to my mp3s or lookup a password with KeePass. I also use it to carry frequently used applications that I install on people's computers (e.g. Antivirus, Antispam, and other tools). I can't wait til they come out with a 20GB one... that'll be great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Computer/Laptop Accessory!, March 3, 2006

This review is from: SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive (SDCZ4-2048-A11, Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
I have owned several flash drives before, some were Lexars some were Sandisks. After getting one of these small bad boys, I can give the rest away. This replaces all competition! It is so fast and far tinier than the picture appears. It is EXACTLY the size of one AA battery. Pretty amazing, huh?

I know a lot of people complain about the skins for this thing being flimsy, not reliable and such. Well, they must have a different version than the one I received because mine is VERY protected. The unit itself is metal and the plastic sleeve just fits over it. I don't see why anybody would want a metal sleeve; it would be impractical and far more prone to scratching. Also, I see some people commented on the sleeves being easy to loose. Well, sure, they are easy to loose but they are small. Cell phones and car keys are small and easy to loose but we don't knock points for that. Also, just because I think the complaints are inane, why do you care if they are hard to loose? When you receive your item you decide then and there what color you want it to be, silver...blue..or..grey. You just put the sleeve you want on the unit and throw the rest away! Who would want to change the color each day unless you are trying to color coordinate your outfit to match your flash drive?

This drive is a winner. It's a practical, small, FAST, and inexpensive unit that has set a new standard. Especially now with this $12 rebate...this drive is a steal!
