Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have been using the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 (32 GB) flash drive for a couple of weeks now. My main uses for flash drives are (1) transferring files between work and home, and (2) running a portable web browser so that I don't have to use the one on my work PC. The browser is open all day long at work. During use, I have observed the SanDisk Extreme to be quite fast in operation and to be a solid performer without any glitches or anomalies. I'm not as crazy about the ergonomics, but I'll get into that in a moment.

Here are the pros and cons I observed during my weeks of use.

PROS:

Fast Performance: This is what you want to know. How fast is the Extreme? It is the fastest USB 3.0 flash drive I have used to date in overall use (I have used and reviewed a Lexar S73, a Lexar Triton, and the SanDisk Extreme, all in 32 GB size). Other reviewers will provide benchmark data. That's fine, but it's just not the whole story. I will provide real-world file copy times for a variety of file numbers and sizes for the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 (SE3), the Lexar Triton USB 3.0 (LT3), and a Lexar Jump Drive USB 2.0 (LJ2). All times are the average of 3 copy operations. I tested both USB 3.0 drives in USB2 ports as well; however, I did not test the USB2 drive in a USB 3.0 port since previous tests there have yielded worse times than in USB2 ports).

Here we go:

Size: 1 file, 666 MB
LJ2: 1m 51s
LT3: 10.9s (26.8s in USB2 port)
SE3: 10.9s (28.7s in USB2 port)

Size: 1 file, 103 MB
LJ2: 18.6s
LT3: 3.1s (5.5 in USB2 port)
SE3: 3.0s (5.8s in USB2 port)

Size: 11 files in 1 folder, 272 MB
LJ2: 43.8s
LT3: 8.2s (14.8s in USB2 port)
SE3: 5.6s (12.

FAAAAAAST! This drive hauls in a big way. If you connect it to a USB3 port, expect to see the advertised speeds. If you connect it to a USB2 port, expect to see that 480Mbps saturated. The only problem I've encountered is that unetbootin does not recognize this as a flash drive or hard drive, so I couldn't write a linux install iso to the drive (at least with unetbootin. You can always do the work manually, it's just inconvenient). Can't say I've tried the secure storage software that comes on it (rock Truecrypt if you need encrypted storage), but the device itself is the best you can get.

I bought the 32GB version of this flash drive to backup the working files on my data drive (my Win 7 desktop has an SSD as the primary drive and a 1TB HDD as the data drive). The unbelievable speed of the flash drive is well documented by other reviewers, especially by L. Kirk. I concur with his observations and measurements; I've never used or read about a flash drive that's faster than this one.

I also concur with many who have criticized the way the connector extension/retraction mechanism works. Not only is the gimmicky spring-loaded mechanism unnecessary, it makes it impossible to fully insert the connector into the USB port because, even when fully opened, the connector moves back into the case about 3mm when you insert it. What Sandisk failed to recognize when designing the drive is that USB ports are "stiff"; i.e., unlike an Ethernet port, inserting a connector into a USB port requires (sometimes more than a little) pressure. With the connecter on springs when open, you can't insert it all the way into the port.

The other design flaw is the activity light on the drive. It's there, but is (a) blue instead of yellow or red which are easier to see, and (b) so tiny as to be nearly invisible. Minor flaw, but I like to know at a glance when the drive is being read or written to so I don't inadvertently unplug it when it's doing something.

I've only used the drive 4 times, once to test the speed and compatibility with USB 2.0 ports, and 3 times to do my backups. So far it has worked perfectly. The multiple reports of quick failure of the 64GB drives is disconcerting. I don't need anything that large, but if you do, you might want to steer clear of that version.

My first 32gb high speed flash drive was a Transcend JetFlash 600 (USB 2.0 not 3.0), it got eaten by the dog; so I bought another one and it died after less than a year. Enter the Sandisk Extreme. The Sandisk Extreme works great. It has plenty of space and quick speeds. Right now it's running on USB 2.0 ports on a 5 year old computer and it achieves speeds up to 28mb/s, which is slow compared to 3.0 speeds but is the fastest I've ever gotten on my computer. So functionality gets 5 stars for me.

Now on to the other aspects of the device. I will first say that although I prefer flash drives with a cap, the locking mechanism feels very secure, more secure than any other drive I've had (including other sandisk drives). There is also room for a lanyard for those that are interested. My only complaints are with the plastic and the light. The plastic feels a tiny bit flimsy when I squeeze it so I would be concerned about it getting crushed, like being stepped on. As for the light, while I don't want a big glowing night light I would prefer something bright enough to see without having to look really closely. It's just a little to dim to notice from far away; not a major deal breaker but it bothers me so I thought I'd mention it.

I use this device every day to transfer files (usually movies 1-3gb and music) between computers as well as to watch movies on my PS3 and so far it has performed flawlessly. I haven't used any of the security or encryption software that came with the device so I can't comment on that. I also haven't had this device as long as my transcend (the one that died) so I have yet to see if it will last. Hopefully it will last a long time and I won't have to update this post, if it dies though I'll be sure to let everyone know.
