In July 2013, SanDisk introduced SanDisk Extreme SD cards with performance speed of up to 80 MB/s read. At launch, these cards were labeled/branded as SanDisk Extreme. As of January 17, 2014, these products have been rebranded as SanDisk Extreme PLUS, but the card performance remains the same.

During the transition, there may be some products that perform at up to 80 MB/s read with the SanDisk Extreme packaging and card label that are available for purchase. These are the same products as the SanDisk Extreme PLUS products and provide the read speed performance of up to 80 MB/s, as stated on the packaging. The color of the label has also transitioned from red/black (Extreme) to gold (Extreme PLUS).

The 80MB/s download rate is much better than my 45MB/s Sandisk card.

The only speed rating stated on the card itself is 80MB/s. Wow. Unfortunately, this is a little misleading. That's the read speed, not the write speed of the card, which is quite a bit lower. If you're like me and want to use this in a camera, the write speed is the important one; this is the metric which dictates how quickly a camera can save files onto the card and how quickly you can use your camera again. The 80MB/s is for speeding up copying files from your camera to your computer if you have a USB 3.0 card reader. I use Transcend USB 3.0 Super Speed Multi-Card Reader for SD/SDHC/SDXC/MS/CF Cards (TS-RDF8K).

If you need it, the card, like all Sandisk Extreme products, comes with a copy of RescuePro Deluxe, a software which allows for recovery of images, videos, documents, music, or just about anything on the card.

I've attached a benchmark of the card using the above card reader in product images.

From the legitimate benchmarks I've seen, this SanDisk Extreme 32 GB SDHC (rated Class 10 [older rating system], or equivalently UHS-1 [newer rating system]) DOES in fact deliver the promised 80MB/s Read AND WRITE speeds. Those who dispute the speed rating based on their "tests" are (i) using USB 2.0 ports or (ii) using DSLR cameras that do not support the [relatively] new UHS bus interface.

To fully utilize the 80MB/s Read/Write speeds on a computer, you will need to use a USB 3.0 port (if you don't have USB 3.0 ports, you can install a PCI Card (for PC Desktops) or a Card Adapter (for Laptops).

To fully utilize the 80MB/s Read/Write speeds on a DSLR/Video Camera, you will need one that has a UHS bus interface. To my knowledge none of the Canon DSLRs (including the 5D Mark III and the 6D) supports the UHS bus interface. For Nikon users, here's the good news -- at least one DSLR (i.e. the D7000) supports the UHS interface.

I hope you have found the information helpful in helping you make an informed decision.

There are so many class 10 SD cards in the market for people to choose from but these strike a good balance between speed and price. The fastest SanDisk SD cards are the Extreme Pro line of cards. Those are very expensive. They cost about 50% more and yet have similar speeds, 95MS/s vs. 80MB/s read speeds to these.

This card is made in China.

I've tested this card against some of the others I've owned over the year and it has by far the fastest Read speeds out of the bunch. What's surprising is the fact that the slower rated 45MB/s Extreme card has a slightly faster Write speed.

For example, here are the approximate transfer times of a 400MB file using my Macbook Pro built in SD card reader.

Sandisk Extreme 80MB/s Class 10 Card:
Write 26.5 Seconds
Read 19.8 Seconds

Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s Class 10 Card (Current generation):
Write 24.5 Seconds
Read 22.3 Seconds

This Sony 40MB/s Class 10 Card (Current generation):
Write 44 Seconds
Read 24.2 Seconds

Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 Card (Not bad for a 4 year old card!):
Write 31.8 Seconds
Read 23.3 Seconds

As you can see, the current Sony 40MB/s card is a real disaster. It's slower than a 4 year old Class 6 card!

First of all, in a camera what you really need to worry about is write speed. This impacts how fast your camera is ready to take another photo/video after you have just taken one. Read speed (for downloading the photos) matters somewhat but you usually are not THAT time critical when downloading your photos. What you really need to consider is missing a shot because your camera is still busy storing the previous photo/video. The card makers always tout read speeds, because they are generally faster.

If you take HD video with your camera (which many cameras are now capable of doing) you want at least this level of SD card (the Extreme) with write speeds up to 60 MB/s2 (this DOES depend on your device). There is also an Advanced Pro, which claims 95 MB/s2 (but does not specify if that is read or write speed) and it costs quite a bit more.

In my Fujifilm FinePix SL1000 16.2MP which takes Full HD movie 1080i/60fps with stereo sound I really notice the difference when taking movies when compared to my Sandisc Ultra. With this Extreme card short movies (up to 1 min c or so) write so fast that I have zero wait time (wait time with the Ultra was usually about 10-15 sec which seems long when you are waiting to video something else). Remember, with the large MB of todays cameras, you need to look at the size carefully when deciding what to purchase. I can fit about 28 min of video on this 32 MB card with my 16.2MP camera, if you are planning to video a long event nonstop you need to think about what size card you need.

I did not notice a difference when taking photos, with the exception of the panorama photo which actually seems to work better using this card and certainly writes faster.
