Play songs in track # order (only alphabetically) 2.

If you are an active person and want an mp3 player skip this model or you'll end up giving it away or throwing it in the trash can.

The Sansa Clip Sport is my fourth Sansa MP3 player, and it is, by far, the worst one I have owned.

I reviewed the 2 gen older version of this mp3 player several years ago. The Sansa Clip+. Let me just direct you to that product since it is still the best mp3 player in this category/price range. It's successor, the Clip Zip, introduced a (crappy) color screen, slightly crappier build and a few less really useful features. It was annoying, but still a lot of capabilities in such a small form factor and under 50 bucks. Now the Clip Sport is here, and they've gone another step backwards, shaving off a couple more features (including recording capabilities), enlarging the body and screen (but with the same low pixel density as before, and now regular LCD instead of OLED that the previous ones had), and making the interface just a tad less intuitive than before.

I don't get it. They had several years to update hardware/specs, reintroduce features that consumers expressly missed in the last Clip, and maybe even *gasp* actually ADD features. Nope. Here's the crappiest Clip yet. Please pay $50 for the same slightly more worthless device because it's now LARGER.

Bottom line: Screw this thing. Buy yourself a Clip+. Outside of not having a color screen here are the advantages of the Clip+: AMOLED screen (not full color but WAY easier to read in sunlight), more intuitive interface, better options including voice recorder, the ability to record and save radio broadcasts, better audiobook controls, smaller and more lightweight. If you need AAC (iTunes music format) compatability, go with the Clip Zip. It's not as good as the Clip+, but still better than the Sport.

Testing this player with familiar music, on a pair of Sennheiser HD 558s, I have no complaints about its sound quality or performance relative to the previous amazing entries in the Sansa line. Scrolling is fast, music sounds very clear, and the player is lightweight. An excellently designed piece of hardware, inside and out.

Now, onto the not-so-good stuff...

I figured that being an early adopter of new hardware would come with a couple of glitches, however, a particularly glaring issue with this player, for me, possibly warrants a return, and the purchase of another Clip+ to replace the one I recently broke.

This is the issue:
For example, if you have an album title such as "Wind Waker Disc 1" and another "Wind Waker 2" by the same artist, "Koji Kondo" what this player will do is combine the two albums into one album (folder) to "Wind Waker Di" (yes, incomplete), and list all tracks from A-Z in alphabetical order. It will not read the ID3v tags for track numbers at all. It won't play track 1 from Disc 1, followed by track 1 from Disc 2, it will look at all of the songs by name, and play them alphabetically ONLY. There is nothing in the settings to change this, but this issue has been submitted as a bug to Sandisk, and presumably they are working on a fix for it. Playlists might solve the issue, but I am not going to sit down and create playlists for all of my records.

Were this player part of the first-generation of MP3 players, this would be an acceptable bug, however something as basic as ordering music properly should be a day-one "feature" and currently, it is making my music library very difficult to access satisfactorily. When an update is released, or better yet, a Rockbox port is, I would highly recommend this player to anyone.

Pure and simple with the SanDisk Sport you CANNOT:
1. Play songs in track # order (only alphabetically)
2. Lock the keys during play so it skips every time you bump it so don't plan using it during sports
3. Combines albums of the same artist so they are all @#$$* up.
4. Call SanDisk and get help. They think everyone likes music alphabetically and filled with sudden skips

This is the poorest design of an Mp3 player I have ever experienced from a company I used to love and trust. Sanyo has lost its best customer!

Hi Gary Petersen,

My name is Allen from SanDisk support. I appreciate your feedback. We are currently working on improving file sorting and adding a key lock feature. We would have this features in the future firmware release however we do not have a date of release yet. Please contact us at 1-866-SANDISK or submit a support request at www.sandisk.com/support if you would like to provide any additional suggestions.

Thank you,

While I was waiting for my 8GB Clip Sport to arrive, I was reading some of the reviews under this product and was getting a little bit anxious. Being an owner of Sansa Clip+ for MANY years, I had a very good experience with Sandisk mp3 players, that's why I was surprised about some of the people's comments where instead of reviewing the actual player they were bashing it based on comparison to other Sandisk models. Now, after receiving it and having a chance to use it - I can share with you my thoughts about it.

Clip Sport arrived in a nice compact package with a front see-through display showing the entire outline of the player and a detailed list of features. I like the presentation of products, and pay a close attention to the packaging. It's always hard to judge the size of the product from on-line pictures, so I was pleased to see how compact it was out of the box, about 60mm x 40mm x 10mm (+ clip). The included accessories were a short rigid usb to micro-usb cable (finally, I don't have to deal with mini-usb and can use a ton of my smartphone micro-usb cables!!!), a set of headphones with 3 pairs of silicone eartips, and a quick start guide. Headphones have a flat tangle-free cable, a chin slider after y-splitter (helps with cable management to keep it tight), and an angled 3.5mm gold plated headphone connector, The earbuds have a soft touch outside finish and a clear external L/R marking. They are very lightweight and have a comfortable fitment with a nice seal when a right size eartip is selected. True, these are not audiophile quality headphones, but it was still nice to include these in a package. Actually the sound is not too bad, with a signature of enhanced bass and rolled off upper mids and treble.
