Let me preface by saying I'm a pretty big fan of SanDisk products; they're the only brand I'll put in my expensive DSLR as their SD card media is solid, fast and reliable.

With that in mind, I ventured to try their flash drive media with the SanDisk Ultra 32 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (Up to 80 Mbps), SDCZ48-032G.... I had read good reviews of their "Extreme" series model, and hoped this "Ultra" one would put in a decent performance. The 32gb "Ultra" drive performs largely as SanDisk describes. They make no mention or promise of write speeds, only reads. I hope to provide clarity on that as well as what they don't say, and demonstrate how it works on both new USB3.0 as well as older legacy USB2.0 ports.

Primarily I wanted this to transfer large burned DVD MKV files (typically 4-7 GB sizes on average). For that purpose, I can't recommend it. The following was a read/write test of a 3.25 GB MKV file on a fairly modern machine with a super fast SSD on the other end; freshly formatted flash drives using exFAT:

Measured speed on USB 3.0 port: Read 63.5 MB/s; Write 9.69 MB/s
Measured speed same PC, older USB 2.0 port: Read 31.1 MB/s, Write 8.25 MB/s

By comparison, an older fairly high performing drive for it's time (a Patriot Rage XT 8GB USB2 from a few years back), copying the same files does the task (on a USB 2.0 port) at 26.6 MB/s read, 15.2 MB/s write (FYI performance is significantly slower with this older Patriot drive in the newer USB 3.0 port). See a pattern here? While drives technically ARE compatible across the different ports (USB2 & 3), you're probably better off using the specific port designed for the flash drive you have in mind for best results.

I find value in a lot of SanDisk's products in general, but this one isn't great. I ran fill volume speed tests and got 9MBps write (peak 11.5, low 3.59. The average was a solid 8.95MBps over 1000 sample files.) Read speeds were better at 39.7MBps, with only three very small dips to 23MBps. Capacity was down 2GB over my Corsair 64GB flash drive.

For reference that same Corsair Flash Voyager GT 64GB got 78.7MBps write and 136.8MBps read. I do not recommend this Sandisk Ultra 64GB USB3 flash drive. If all you need is capacity and price is the most important attribute, go for it.

Hi Mark

I am David from SanDisk support. The speed of the flash drive depends upon different factors. The factors includes the USB interface through which the flash drive is connected, the type of files being transferred and the operating system. We would like to know why you are facing the issue. I would request you to please contact SanDisk support at 1-866- SANDISK or submit a support request at www.sandisk.com/support so that we can guide you towards a resolution.

Thank you,
David,

I bought 6 of these sticks from my local PC shop down the street, 3x 16GB and 3x 32GB (SDCZ48-016G and SDCZ48-032G) mainly due to them being USB3.0 standard.

The packaging deceivingly states " UP TO 80 MB/s read speeds". However they do NOT mention the write speeds anywhere.

Upon testing all 6 sticks, I found them all to have an average write speed of only 10 MB/s (like what other reviewers mentioned).

To give you an idea, my other 2 sticks (Lexar and Corsair) have writes speeds of 34 MB/s and 36 MB/s.

I was interested in this product because it is smaller in size than the older SanDisk Ultra 64GB I currently own. However, the speed was HORRIBLE!!! It was 1/4 of what I was getting on the older model, so I returned this promptly!

Average write speed over my Intel USB3 port is consistently around 46 MB/s. Average read speed has been around 92 MB/s. FAT32 formatted capacity is 29.4GB.

I bought this to replace my older smaller USB2 Sandisk Ultra that would only read/write at around ~5 MB/s over the same USB ports. Good upgrade for the price, it has been performing better than expected. I have never had a Sandisk drive break or fail on me before and this one "feels" durable too. I have uploaded an image showing my consistent speeds on Windows 8.1 with modern Intel powered USB3 ports.

6/23/14 EDIT: Looking at other reviews for this item it seems many people are having very poor performance. Not sure why the inconsistencies, but I wouldn't be so quick to blame this drive. It could be poor USB controllers on their motherboards, old/buggy drivers, OS version/type or a thousand other issues. I would recommend buying only from Amazon, it is even possible that some of the 3rd party sellers are passing off counterfeit hardware as genuine.

Purchased a USB 3.0 to get high speed copy of data from/to my new laptop which has 3.0. This USB drive was only slightly faster than USB 2.0 drives. In comparison, I also bought a USB 3.0 external hard drive that was 4 or 5 times faster than this USB thumb drive in copy speed.

This device emits huge amounts of RFI that interfered with my wireless mouse. Device died after 6 months. I contacted Sandisk via their live chat and was told I'd receive an RMA via email. That email never arrived. I'm going to write this off as a lost cause. My advice - don't buy this flash drive.

Well, I would love to give a review on the item and tell you how fast it was, but when I got it, I couldn't even format the drive as it kept returning a "write protected" error.

Dead on Arrival.

I expected more from SanDisk. Avoided all the other brands for precisely this reason.

EDIT:

I'm giving this one more star for Amazon's stellar customer service. They offered a full refund. Product is still defective, but thumbs up for customer service.
