Reliable (when made by Toshiba) but slow,

This review is from: SanDisk 512 MB Type M xD-Picture Card ( SDXDM-512, Retail Package) (Personal Computers)
The xD "Picture Card" flash card comes in three flavors: standard (up to 512MB), Type M (512MB, 1GB, 2GB), and Type H (512MB or 1GB). The "H" stands for "high speed" and is the latest format allowing in theory for reads and writes up to 3 times as fast as Type M cards. Interestingly, Type M xD cards are 20% slower than "standard" 256MB or 512MB xD cards. For capacity 512MB or above, you won't find any more standard xD's; you'll find only M or H ones.
To see if your Fujifilm or Olympus camera is compatible with an M or H card, go to their websites and check out the compatibility charts. (Amazon doesn't allow links so I can't include them here but you can e-mail me if you can't find the compatibility charts.) This SanDisk 512MB "M" card, which I used in my excellent Fuji F30 camera until I upgraded to a Sandisk "H" card, was reliable (but see caveat below). But it was slow, much slower than the regular-type SD card in my Panasonic camera. The problem with xD cards greater than 256MB is both "M" and "H" cards compress data which explain the slowness relative to high-speed Secure Digital, Memory Stick Duo and Compact Flash cards. For most applications xD cards are still plenty fast; occasionally, when you shoot in continuous mode, you might experience some problems. When you buy a Sandisk (or Fujifilm or Olympus) in store, be sure to get a package that's marked "Made in Japan." Only two companies actually manufacture the xD cards: Toshiba of Japan and Samsung of South Korea. Samsung cards, in my experience, have serious quality problems and *WILL* fail sooner rather than later. Toshiba ones are much more reliable; none of my Toshiba-made cards have failed even under heavy usage. Therefore, you should never trust xD cards that are marked "Made in S. Korea." Be sure to shop around until you find Toshiba ("made in Japan") cards. This tip will save you lots of precious memories and from lots of headaches later on. Unfortunately, this verification is hard to do when you shop on Amazon or online; I can only say "good luck"! At least you have 30 days to return or exchange when you buy from Amazon.

The Fuji 512MB XD card works great. Provides capacity for 400+ pictures in my Fuji 3mp camera. No progamming or software required.

I searched hi and low for this card. From the big box stores to the specialty camera stores. Nobody stocked it any longer. The fine folks at my local specialty camera store suggested I try on line. I found exactly what I was looking for and I had the product quicker than I expected.

XD cards are being run out by SD cards, but if you have an older camera you have to be thankful they still make them. My daughter has an older Sony camera and they have upgraded their cards so many times she can't get any new cards for her camera. The xd cards are small and do a good job --- they make larger ones than the 512mb, but that's plenty for me/.

I like the smaller storage size. When I go to process pictures.I don't have so many shots on the card that have to download. I know most people prefer more capacity per card. I just prefer to work with less on each card as I use each card for specific events.

I like it because it holds so many more pics, but when you go to take video, and play it back on the camera or the comp ot the tv, it skips like crazy. It is not my camera, because I checked in two of my others. It still did it.But so worth for the many more pics.

Excellent price for this product. I bought several and at best picture quality/resolution I get something like 146 7.3 MP pictures per card. Took over 1000 pictures in Alaska so they really came in handy.

This was for a new synthesizer(kurzweil) but it was not old enough of a version and did not work. The memory is fine but kurzweil should have never spec'ed out such an old hard to find 512meh xD card version.
What the heck were they thinking? Will use it on another camera....

Today, the only way to get to old camedia camera 512MB is going into Amazon, nowadays this memory capacity is dificult to find because manufacturers is doing now 1GB or more, these ones did not work in our old camedia camera from Olympus.

I have a camera that uses 512 meg memory boards. Well the manufacturer has stoped selling the boards so i felt i should pick up a few before they are all gone. The boards were priced right so i went for it. My order was processed without any problems and i recieved my order quickly. The memory boards work fine and i'm happy.
