Chris Abani's poetry is scarifying, wonderful, haunting and unforgettable. On every page there's something that sticks with me. I find myself saving a poem to read in the evening, as a kind of grace note on the day, because I know the wonderful language will infuse my dreams.

Chris Abani has done a concrete imagery with language, begging us to carry our fears and courage with the same basket.

This is simply one of the best books of poetry I've ever read. Through this cycle of linked and sequential poems, Abani wrestles with religion, lost family, race, gender and politics. The book is accessible yet intricate, intensely personal yet universal. A virtuoso with language, Abani enacts the breaking of bread and the conversion of blood into wine. It's an offering of ritual. A book that gives and gives and gives. Read this now!
