This review is from: Sanctuary: A Cathedral Concert (Audio CD)
I am glad that I have been asked to review this album. I have found some music with female vocals that comes close to Kitka but this music is on another plane. I do not understand the languages so it is just the beautiful tones and harmonies that Kitka creates; voices moving sometimes into eerie dissonances creating the most lush and complex textures. Their voices are deep and mature. The songs with Juliana Graffagna as lead vocal give me the goose bumps. In this album those tracks would be "Uz Vy Golubi" and Szombateste Bucsuztato". In the album "Wintersongs" the song Betlehem, Betlehem song by Juliana Graphagna is in my opinion possibly the most beautiful song I have ever heard. Kitka has little instrumental accompaniment. They don't need it, but where it is used it is always complimentary and tasteful and never overwhelms the voices. My favorite albums by Kitka are "Nectar" and "Wintersongs". But "Sanctuary" is a beautiful album. I also have "Vine". Listening to Eastern European music as performed by Kitka constantly surprises and amazes me like following a new trail deep into a melodic woods. The song I like best by Tzvetanka Varimezova in Sanctuary is "Barem Sa Ergen, Mamo, Nahodih". She has an amazing voice. The song entitled "Gorice Sitna", Zelena pairs Tzvetanka Varimozova voice with an interesting instrument, the "Gulda" I think it's called. That is a Bulgarian bag pipe that has a sort of nasal quality and is played with a lot of ornamentation. It is a strange sounding instrument. It is fascinating to listen to Tzvetanka Varimozova seemingly mimicking this sound with her voice. Strange and beautiful.
